After tonight's debacle of an nrl match, I agree. The winner this round was the 'penalty'. Definite mvp

To be fair though, neither the Sharks or Storm are free flowing teams. They are tough and gritty and both like to push the boundaries in the ruck and coming off the defensive line.

The match was terrible to watch and even though the whistle dominated there were several times when there should have been more penalties. I can recall Slater deliberately coming through the ruck twice, causing an error and not getting penalized.

I'd like to know how there are 30 penalties in the dogs rabbits game, but I guy in the process of trying to score has a defending leading with the feet and kicking, and it's not a penalty try.

Ultimately it didn't impact the final result fortunately enough but I was also a bit puzzled. Hopefully it will be addressed later in the week

they might as well just have a silent ref and use the bunker to ref the match, have a red light and bell every time someone does something wrong, WHERE DID THAT FREE FLOWING GAME GO. MY GOD WHAT HAVE WE DONE TO IT.

If they break the rules blow the whistle I am OK with it. The game had become a joke players not getting to their feet and just rolling the ball back, teams blatantly ignoring the ref and being offside all game, wrestling to slow the play the ball down in their own 20 metres. It's time to change the coaches will eventually get it. These rules have been there for 110 years time to enforce them.

Don't blame the refs the players and coached are the ones breaking the rules.

What about Flanagan last night in the presser saying even if we where only half a meter offside we got penalised!!!! Doh just get onside then you moron.

totally agree with you Ross, the original rules say you have to be back 5 yards from the play the ball, they then increased it to 5 metres, now it is ten meters, if the space now is ten metres, then does that not mean if it is only 5 metres to the try line or 8 or 3 whatever it is, the front foot should be on the line and the rear foot behind the line, that's what we we taught in juniors many years ago.

The only critisism I have of the officials and their hardline stance is consistency. The interpretation and administration of the obstruction rule is still a dogs breakfast.

While discretion is important in some circumstances there are teams who have become experts at bending the rules to their own design.

Yep there are still issues with the obstruction. My solution is pretty simple if a block runner is in front of the ball and makes contact with the defensive line, penalise them they are offside. Block plays should be illegal.

However I thought they had a bit of a balance and a clear definition, take them ball outside the block runner OK make incidental contact on inside shoulder OK anything else penalise. There needs to be no discretion. I could live with this if they ruled on it black and white.

I think there is a place for block / second man plays and the powers that be have made the ruling to technical. More often than not I feel that if on review a defender takes the wrong option and goes to the lead runner and common sense shows they would not have stopped the play it should be play on.

Consistency across the board is the killer and I actually wonder if many of our touch judges need some work. The amount of obvious forward passes, and illegal contact they miss is crazy.
