Hey Guys...

Found this photo on facebook and it encouraged me to put up a thread about this Cyclone.

I know Michael (TSS501) lives (or used to) in Townsville. Hopefully anyone else who lives up there is safe.

There was talk that Emerald was going to flood again and that the peak would be a foot higher than last time which would be devastating for the town. Rocky was expected to flood again also...

Best of luck to everyone!!

Cheers

This thing looks big, hope everyone takes the right precautions and stays safe over the next few days

After looking at it again and seeing some of the weather warnings we are getting on TV...i am absolutely blown away by the size of this thing...it would literally cover QLD

Hoping everyone is okay and be safe then sorry guys.

If I was up there I would leave. Bad way for Queensland to start 2011!

I Know someone about 5kms of the coast right in the middle of the path of it.

They told too stay home. I don't know if that was good advice by authorities.

The advice was to get out before today, and too late if you didn't. I'm sure they are trying to avoid people being trapped on the road or otherwise unable to find shelter.

Latest I heard was this - still category 5 cyclone with winds expected over 280kmph and upto (current estimates) 300kmph (Hurricane Katrina had winds of 340kmph); eye of cyclone 35-50 km across and moving at 30kmph; overall width of cyclone a whopping 800km ( massive, biggest to ever hit the country). Even as it heads further inland it will remain a tropical cyclone diminishing to a category 3 by the time it hits Mt Isa and NT (current path trajectory - if it remains on this path it will hit Mt Isa by about the end of the week or the weekend - the eye that is). Put basically, Mt Isa District should be feeling the outskirt winds by tomorrow midday. This thing is a monster. Good luck to all in the path. Prayers and wishes with you all.

BOM is doing hourly updates and at 3pm (QLD) 4pm (NSW), Cyclone Yasi, Category 5 was estimated to be 280 kilometres east of Cairns and 305 kilometres north northeast of Townsville and moving west southwest at 35 kilometres per hour.
