Spurs fined $250K for sitting players

This is an interesting issue, and yes my view may be bias, the fine was harsh, Pop should have lied and said they were all injured, honesty costs 250k

But found this video about this...

Basically its stating the Spurs possibly sat these guys as a bit of a FU to the NBA, Spurs played 4 road games in 5 nights (6 road games in total), Miami had a 6 day break, their last game was also at home. So Pop sat these guys to stick it up the NBA.

I guess we'll never know but if the Spurs had won, would they have still be fined, 22 seconds to go the Spurs were up by 2, it was actually a good close game.

Good on him. As they have said how can the nba be angry at them resting players for a nationally televised game with 4 games in 5 days?? The fans can't be possibly be angry, they see 50ish home games a year..

At the end of the day, they may have a legal case on their hands. It is America.

Even if it is an FU to the NBA, sport is often about mental challenges like this and Pop backed down from it. The game could've been won, that would've been an FU enough I reckon, without letting down fans.

The only way it's acceptable is if the money is given back to those who paid to attend or see the game with those stars in it, which is a pretty impossible task. What the hell is that dictator going to do with the money??

I think it is kinda right to punish them, but the amount and precedent set are a huge thing now...

I think it's really stupid...if they were doing it to throw a game or something then it's a whole different matter...but they weren't and surely a team is allowed to rest their players if they think it will benefit them in the long run. Teams in the NRL rest players for games that aren't important, after representative games etc.

Pop could have chosen the game against the Magic but he didnt. I am not against resting the players but not this way. I think its right that the NBA do it because it will stop other teams doing it.

Point: If you had paid a lot of money for a decent seat to see the best of the NBA slog it out, would you feel slightly ripped off?
Point: If Miami had rested their big trio, along with the Spurs, would you feel even more ripped off?
Point: These 4 athletes are paid a combined total of $485,000 PER game. Should they not earn their salary if they are not injured? Playing limited minutes is fine IMO, but to not play at all in December?

Last season the Full Spurs squad lost by 30 in Miami. I think they figured it might happen again so why waste their legs.

The $250k is excessive.

I would have thought $50k would be even pretty steep.

Good move by Stern IMO; as others have said, fine to rest players, but WHY not rest them against one of the weaker teams that you still have a chance at winning then!? Probably cause Pop wanted tgo give a big FU to the NBA as someone said haha...... but not really fair on the fans; imagine if one of us flew to Miami for the game and saw that!? Come on....... although don't know why anyone would wanna watch the Spurs anyway!?

Wasn't in Miami!?

It was the last game of the road trip! If they rested in orlando, they would have still needed to fly and stay with the team into Miami.

They now have a legit chance to beat the Griz tomorrow, to take the top spot in the west!

There are too many conspiracists IMO.

There was no CLEAR rule violated, except the one that allows the NBA to dictate which is rubbish. It should have to be a clear cut rule, however I agree with Hairy! If the fine went to the fans that missed seeing them, then it would be a little better!

When parents paid tickets to spend time with their kids to see Duncan, Parker and Manu for a game that can only happen once a year (unless they play each other in the finals), I think, these players should play if they are not injured.

At least for 1 qtr... But no! Pop sent them all home on a commercial flight before the game started when all these families have planned for a good night out...... I wonder how these players really feel deep inside them not being able to show up in front of their fans... Just because Pop said so...

Pop is all about winning and he's got proof for that... But honestly, NBA is an entertainment for families... I'd say, have fun and let your players show up and put a smile or 2 on those kids faces and not dissapointment. After all they are getting paid quite a lot of money.

For once, I think Stern has done something right for the fans...

99.9% of that crowd were there to see wade and Lebron. I just don't understand how you get fined for list management, it's just modern sport.

You don't know that for sure... That's in Miami where a lot of Latinos there probably wanted to see Manu at least once a year...

And btw there's only 41 home games in a regular season for each team.

Spurs are usually at least second round of playoffs which is why I said 50ish games.

It's no good for the fans but it was just one game...seriously should the NBA be allowed to punish a team for how they manage their roster? So the NBA can now decide how rosters are managed? Will they be also now be giving input on when to rest Lebron during critical times during games? Do you think there would have been any penalty if the game was between the Wizards and the Raptors and one team rested some players?

As far as i can see, each team is a business as well as a sporting team and the coach should be able to play who he wants from his available roster...that's what a roster is there for! So you can choose!

As far as i can see, each team is a business as well as a sporting team and the coach should be able to play who he wants from his available roster...that's what a roster is there for! So you can choose!

Those players were available as far as I know...

And that 1 game you're talking about is the only game the fans in Miami will see them play so its kinda important.

But this situation is different... A regular game in November? It's unheard of.

It probably would have happened to another team if they had a 36 year old Duncan and 35 year old Manu!! It's just that peanut stern getting some back on his most hated team!!

That would be tough I guess but they are getting paid millions of $$$ so not a good excuse imho... Most teams will just managed the minutes of their older players during the course of each game. If this happened in around the last week of March or April, Stern will just take it as it is and won't punish the Spurs. But doing it in November? I think its selfish and silly.
