Hey guys, I was just browsing through some Jordan cards on SCF, and came across this MJ refractor, and was wondering how the hell there is such a massive difference in grade, mainly being the centering?? Has someone slipped a $50 note in with their package on submitting maybe....

I noticed by looking at the 2 cards that the bottom card pic is more to the right than the first.... guy in back right you can read suns on his top in the top card and only sun on the bottom card. they must have a template to what the cards are to be potential 10 for centering.
this is just my observation..... dont shoot me down....

I see where your looking at, but the difference is a bee's dick, surely wouldn't be a whole 2 point less deduction?

There probably is not a huge room for error when the point scale is out of just 10. The pic above show the suns player in the background with Suns almost completely showing compared to the picture below. Is there somewhere that people can see a pic of how a perfect card should look ?

Taken directly from becketts website.

Gem Mint 9.5
Centering: 50/50 one way, 55/45 the other on front.
Mint 9
Centering: 55/45 both ways on front. 70/30 or better on back.
Near Mint/Mint 8
Centering: 60/40 both ways or better on front.
Near Mint 7
Centering: 65/35 both ways or better on front.

as i said just my observation...
we are talking about a trading card here

I know with comic books as thats my main collection that centering is strick even thou it doesnt have its own section like on cards. I know on a$1000 comic, thr cover being off center can drop value by a few hundred dollars.

grading is about money and items keeping their grade for value purposes.

maybe check their website... they should have something regarding that section on grading, some explanation on how they come about there scores should be there.

well looking at those numbers I would take it as a shift of 2-3mm is a 60/40 (10% shift for the centre)

again only trying to throw in what I would take out of the info given.....

and yes I do agree on the harsh factor on grading in that respect.

Reverse centering is about the same as Nats.

First bgs9.5 you can nearly make out whole "suns"
second bgs9.5 you can't even make out the word sun in full.
My bgs8 you can make out sun in full.

So mine is in the middle of the 2 graded 9.5 and mine has a 7.5 for centering.

Any chance you can stick them side by side in your post? Don't put an "enter" between them.

From what I can see, you'rs is further to the right, and further to the bottom. Look at the "bars" that keep the card in place, line up the edges with sections on the cards.

It's probably hard to see a difference without a measurement. They're probably far different under a lense?

Also, the "suns" on Barkley's jersey woulnt make a difference if you can read it or not, the difference is centering, not clarity.

you are right, yours is right between the other two. I would be sending the scans of all three to beckett an ask for an answer.
I could understand if one had the 9.5 and one a 8 then in reality yours should be between them, UNLESS your is actually the only one that has perfect centering and the other two are wrong.....

the bottom one is actually a lot higher on the card too...
