Season cut short by greed...

Thanks Jaames, I was close. AFL should be proud of those numbers, 4th on average attendances. Double the average number at a NBA game.
And they take 23% compared to 53%.
There's no stats on this site for IPL, it was on the news just last weekend and was listed as second behind NFL. I'm sure of that.

The AFL should be proud, but lets be honest ytou cant compare a 100k MCG to a 30k NBA stadium. Ofcourse we will average more. But NBA is way more profitable because stadium deal are better, tv, etc. Though afl is improving in all aspects. But supply and demand means NBA get away with charging more per ticket. Afl only get ridiculous prices for finals and a handful of blockbusters.

when people like Rashard Lewis are the second highest paid player in the NBA then you know you have problems. Just sayn, not hatn

Dont forget the greedy owners in this mess - they are just as much to blame. I dont believe for one second this we are going broke BS that the owners are running with. If the NBA is doing so poorly and all the teams are losing money how does Stern keep his job? He has been through this many times and is the king of spin when it comes to labour negotiations.

I don't care either way.....I just HATE strikes! It is a form of manipulation and is a pathetic way of getting what you want.

(Just a personal opinion)

In other news....interesting that the AFL trades are going on like nothing has happened!

No deal has been done there yet!

Probably the same way the heads of the FA do every year when Premier League teams lose massive amounts.

This whole lockout thing is a crock of sh1t and it seems both the owners (as well as the commish David Stern) and the players are out to try and prove which group are the bigger idiots! The owners are trying to impose increased luxury tax penalties (on themselves) for teams whose payrolls go over the salary cap. Pea-brain Derek Fisher, who happens to be the president of the Players Associations claims "it still seems like a hard cap". Let me clear this up for you, Mr Fisher - it is not a rule that teams MUST stay under the salary cap, but teams will be penalised harder should they exceed the cap. If this is a hard cap, then the whole Ozcards community can ride me.

Mr Stern, firstly let me say that you a gimp and a hypocrite! You are a gimp because I'm mad as hell. You're a hypocrite because you force teams to remove reference to current players from their web sites, but I can still go to the NBA store and buy a t-shirt or jersey with a current players' name and number on it.

As far as the BRI goes, split it up 50/50 and get on with playing basketball! All it would take now is for new Pistons owner Tom Gores to move my beloved Detroit Pistons to Guadalawhothehellcares and I'll go and be a Detroit Tigers fan, even though they lost to the Rangers today:cry:

we should be very proud of our afl in the big scheme of things... i never knew we were 4th in the world in average league attendances! fantastic

afl has 187 games played with larger capacity stadiums, hence theyll always have larger average...nowhere near the 1,230 played in the nba, hence why nba will always be more profitable - sheer volume... given also that stadium deals are better in nba and EVERY team has its own stadium, which certainly helps... too many afl teams need to share the same facilities and it comes down to who can afford to get the best deal for themselves.

they are my 2 favorite league in the world followed by the nfl...

both leagues should be very proud of the product that they produce for the public, and whilst I understand it is a negotiation both should also need a serious amount of work when it comes to player/league/owner disputes... surely these things can be settled further in advance than leaving it to the last minute as both leagues have?? very annoying for us the consumer

simple greed is what is fuelling this damn lockout... these players are most likely THE single best paid atheletes in the WORLD. they need to get their heads out of their asses and stop worrying about what it would mean to them to drop salary from $14M a season to maybe $10M a season... still an exorbitant amount of money that most people in this world would be lucky to have one tenth of over their lifetime!

Tell that to Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Dwayne Wade etc etc

Of course its a specialised sport. Every professional sport is. There is a reason only a select few get to play at that level.

By your reasoning you and I could walk onto an NBA team and dominate. Would love to see you take on Lebron and even get close to scoring.

Seriously Angry this has to be one of most stupid things I have ever read.

So your telling me if the Lebron etc of this world didn't play in the NBA that the fans would still turn up to watch........ I think not.

If Lebron etc all went and started a new league the fans would just migrate to that. The fans follow the players.

Without the players the NBA is just a corporate structure........ nothing else

I agree the most stupid post to ever have been typed on this forum I feel so much dumber after reading that comment but geez you are a worry mate

"If this is a hard cap, then the whole Ozcards community can ride me."

Should we form a line? This is gunna hurt ya.

Who will a shortened season benefit most? Not financially but in terms of winning?
I think if they cram more games into less time then Chicago back up well.
If they actually lose games, then older bodies will time it better. So Kobe(Lakers) and Garnett(Celts) come to mind.

But the NBA is not a specialised sport... Hockey you have to be skilled and rough. Football you have to be damn tough. Baseball is very specific skills. Basketball? Who can't chuck a ball into a hoop.
The NBA gets by on star power, but the stars are already VERY WELL PAID... hell, even the bums are WELL PAID...

its as specialised as any other sport. might not be as tough, but since when should money earned be related to bruises recieved? pretty sure youd know that its more than just 'chucking a ball in a hoop'. not everyone could be as accurate or entertaining. by your reckoning, anybody can throw a strike or anyone can run a football 100 yards.

Ok how about I put it as 'careers are generally shorter in other sports because the extreme wear and tear the players suffer'.
Anybody CAN put a ball in a hoop - just at differing levels of skill.
Have you ever thrown a pitch? I have and it's damn hard and sore.
Have you ever played gridiron? I have and I was too cowardly for it.
Have you ever shot a puck? I've tried... skating is hard enough but then to add in puck control and shooting? Get out of here...

Hairy your not making yourself look too good. There is no way anyone can measure how skillful one sport is compared to another........ it's just impossible. All it is, is your matter of opinion. In the same tone I could say anyone can throw a ball at another guy a few feet away. Anyone can run and catch a ball. Anyone could kick a ball in between two posts 10 feet apart. Just pointing out your statement was a bit far fetched and ignorant.

Yes NFL is more taxing on the body, but its only a 16 game season. Yes baseball players play 100+ games a year but they spend half the time in the field standing around doing nothing. To me i think golf and aussie rules footy are the most skillful but I'm not going to degrade another sport just because of my ignorance.

I am not saying the players are in the right, but they are not certainly 100% to blame. The owners have a lot to answer for themselves. The NBA brought in over $4bill last season, so if the players aren't getting an increased cut, it lines the pockets of the owners and league which 90% are already millionaires/billionaires. Its really a catch 22 situation.

I think you just got a bit worked up and emotional over the situation and came in for a rant. Believe me i wish they would all pull their heads in and just play ball, but I can see how difficult it is to come to an agreement as well as there are a lot a factors at play.

The point I'm trying to make is that the NBA players are already getting a HELL OF A LOT OF MONEY for what is not that taxing a game (comparatively)...

The owners will want to make money (or at least not lose as much) and if they can't then why would they want it to happen? The players HAVE THE CHOICE TO PLAY but are being greedy and coming out with crap that they 'just want to play' when they could be...

I'm so pissed off at it all right now.

I am pissed off at it all right now also lol. What am I meant to do at work now? I usually spend most of it on my fantasy teams or watching live games I might actually have to work now.... this is no good.

You cant get sucked into the PR spin. Those losses are exaggerated greatly and like I said you will find most owners own their teams as a tax write off so the bigger the loss the better. If you look at the history of the league there has only been 6-8 consistently profitable teams and their is a reason for that. Yes players are getting paid a hell of a lot, I agree, but the money needs to go somewhere and the players have just as much a right to it as the owners do. If I was in charge I would be pumping it all into grass roots bball and the local clubs, but that aint happening any time soon. Its one area the AFL excel at. They always look after the grass roots.

I could care less about the PR, the owners, the revenues.... I want the players to play what they're ALREADY getting paid STUPID MONEY to do...

90% blame on players, 10% on owners.
Under current financial situation, players are crying for $1 million out of their $10 million salaries.
Meanwhile, staffs are losing all their incomes thats pay for their food, mortgages, kids' education. I doubt players really care about them.

They have never said they're all going broke, they have said that a handful of small market teams are losing money. Overall it's 300 million league wide but the big markets like LA and NY still make a profit individually.
