Hi all just wanted to share a story. I just showed my old man how much Scanlens cards go for these days from the 60s n 70s and his jaw dropped for example we watched a Carlton Logo card from '74 go for $91. I think it broke his heart because he began telling me of how the only reason he never collected Scanlen cards was because he hated chewing gum and figured the cards would never be worth much. Instead he'd spend his extra money on smokes, junk food or beer at the club. He is an avid football lover and enjoys watching me collect the latest cards. He told me how back in those days, you could literally walk down to a local footy game or near an agency and see these cards scattered around on the ground on regular occasions. I asked him 'Well why didn't you pick them up when you saw them' and he replied 'Well I never actually thought they'd ever be worth anything, the same reason I never bothered buying them either and plus, I hated chewing gum.'
Unlike my dad I never had that error in judgment as I still have all my cards and stickers from the early 90's onwards including all the big names knowing that one day, they will fetch me a pretty penny.
So the simple moral of this story is collect your heart out, keep them for 30 years, sell them and then go buy yourself a nice car or go for a holiday. Hell, collect several thousand cards, sell them and go buy a house!
As for my father, boy doesn't time change one's opinion!!! ;D
