I think might have that call last week - except they asked for the previous owners of my phone number. Mind you I've hade my number now for almost four years after a fiasco with Dodo that nearly wound up in the courts - don't ever sign up with Dodo for anything! Anyway, I simply told the bloke that those people don't own this number, haven't done so for four years, it is now a private number, is also on the do not call register and to please not call the number again. he promptly hung up.
Got one of those calls a couple weeks ago.
We're on the do not call register and still get a few, they can get through initially under the pretense of charity I think, after that though yeah, smash em with the company info Matt said.
just got that phone call, looks at this literally this morning and didnt think they would call me. I just said i'll be back in a sec and went to have a shower, unfortunatly they were gone when i got back lol.

What some of them are also doing is getting you to give them access to your PC whilst only charging you $9.99 to fix the problem. Sounds cheap doesn't it?
They get your personal details, CC details and you get a headache.
I have had about 10 of these calls recently and I either string them along or simply tell them i dont own a computer.
The best one I have got them with so far is that I tell them my number is on the do not call register and if they were so kind to give me their company details I will have no hesitation in reporting them to the government where the maximum fine is $250,000.
After that they dont care what my computer is sending.
Matt, just to give you the heads up on what you just wrote, I hate to say that you are wrong. I worked in a call centre here in perth where i was cleaning up the damage these OUTBOUND knuckleheads were doing. I was dealing with 15 new TIO cases a week and the TIO said there hands were tied. They slapped us with a level 1 fine of $25.00 and told us to settle it with the customer. The law does not go outside the boarders of Australia and there is very little anyone in the country can do about outbound from outside of Australia. I got tired of dealing with the stress of being the middle person for a dodgy internet company and the bafoons we hired to make outbound. I told them to stick it and walked.
Its also like the dialers that people use, the data they get is usually scrubbed against the database of do not call that the government has, however, outbound in India do not need to use this. There dialers are set up to start with XXXX-XXXX and go up one at a time. They spend half the day on the phone listening to this line is not connected or fax machines.

Thanks for the heads-up, can see lots of older retirement age non tech savvy people falling for something like this. Been meaning to register for a while - cost of a silent number works wonders too!
Hiyas,
Alot of these "call up" people have different agendas.
Some are only after personal details (CC etc), some want you to download "fixes" which inturn stuff your system and others really do sell you something (of no use at all) and make a fortune.
I like trying to sell them something back.
Them "excuse me you need to buy this product right now to save your computer"
Me "OK, I'm broke but I do have a washing machine for sale. Would you like to buy my washing machine so I have the money to buy the product?"
Then "No ma'am, but you need this product right away"
Me "OK , I'll even throw in some washing powder..It's a great washing machine. I'm sure you'll like it"
THEY end up getting frustrated and hanging up!
