I really can't work it out. Some sellers charge around the $4 - $7 range, which I think is quite reasonable. Others are around the $10 - $12 mark, maybe OK for a high end card. Then I've seen some up between $24 - $33 for a single card. Now who is going to buy any card that will end up costing $30 more and likely just as long to arrive? They might as well just say that they don't ship to Australia.

I think they charge that amount because they are sending via Global Priority Express. Some of them got burnt many times and will no longer send without tracking. But in my opinion, they should just stop selling to people overseas because that postage is just ridiculous for a $1 card.
That sort of explains it a bit more, but I think those $20-$30 charges are crazy for any card unless you buy some high-end mega hit that might justify the expense.

The best way to buy from those sellers is to get someone from the US to bid for you, batch a couple auctions together, then send the lot to you in one go using the cheapest possible postal method. But with the change in the definition of "package" or "large letters", this is no longer as cheap as it used to be.
