PHIL HUGHES IN CRITICAL CONDITION

After being hit in the head by a bouncer from Sean Abbot, Hughes collapsed face first and is in St Vincent Hospital in a critical condition.

Hang in there Hughesy!

UPDATE: It is believed he was hit somewhere around the chest and neck. He is currently in an induced coma. According to 2GB, he is currently undergoing scans to determine whether he will need surgery or be sent to intensive care.

For a days play to be called off it has to be a very bad injury.

Apparently they might abandon the whole match. Announcement expected in the coming hours.

It's absolutely awful hey guys - as you could imagine in a situation like this there are various reports and rumours flying everywhere at the moment. There are reports that Phil Hughes is undergoing scans to determine whether he has surgery or is sent to intensive care.

The cricket community needs to be there for Sean Abbott too - I couldn't imagine how I'd feel if I was the bowler.

Brenton Speed on Fox Sports News just said that they Phil is currently undergoing surgery. They interviewed experienced cricket writer Peter Lalor and the poor bastard looked as white as a ghost. Everyone is just in shock.

UPDATE: Hughes is currently undergoing emergency brain surgery. It is reported that he stopped breathing twice whilst receiving treatment on the field and on the way to the hospital.

I am desperately upset.
He is (or was) my favourite player and while he experienced rejection from CA many times he kept on fighting.
Hopefully, he can use that fighting spirit to keep himself alive and he will rejoice in Aussie colours once more.

Such sad news, hope he pulls through this. Best wishes for Phil and his family.

Where did he get hit? I've seen one picture that shows behind his ears? Another pic where he looks very k.o.

I started playing club cricket again this season and our keeper was hit by the ball going down leg side as we trying to save it, busted lip and a loose tooth. One teammate from England was saying how he has played Rugby his whole life and has never had a scar from playing it, but he's had four or so scars on his head due to cricket. Goes to show how dangerous this game really is.

UPDATE: Hughes is out of surgery which was performed to reduce pressure on his brain which leads me to believe he was bleeding internally. He is currently in ICU. On behalf of Cricket Australia, Cricket NSW and Cricket SA, I remind you to respect Hughes' families privacy in this time of distress.

Also, whilst zooming in on a photo, I have discovered he was hit on the jawline, right under the ear.

I agree with you @Matty76 I have met him nice and he is such a lovely guy. It is just a terrible accident. I suggest we send cards to either SACA or St Vincent's Hospital. #prayforhughesy

Phil is just a champion bloke.

I remember I was at Pratten Park watching him play a first grade game a couple of years ago. During the afternoon I approached Phil and asked if he could please sign a couple of cards for me, which he did. He then saw my then 4 year old hiding behind my leg. Phil stuck out his hand and motioned for my son to shake his hand. He then introduced himself to my son & asked him his name. He had a five minute conversation with him & him a high five.

He is a champion & I hope all the thoughts and prayers of the whole cricket community & others help him in the biggest fight of his life.

I saw that all shield games have now been abandoned for this round. A sensible decision from Cricket Australia, I am sure no one feels like playing at the moment.....

Not even I feel like going to my club training tomorrow night.

The couple of times I met Phil Hughes, he was f***** awesome. Seriously. AWESOME. Everyone says the same thing. My English cousin met him in England last Ashes and said for an Aussie he was a top bloke.

However, the media are scabs. The hand wringing and hysteria is disgraceful. I can imagine Craddock trying to get an exclusive interview with his helmet. Seriously…it's that dire. The hospital said there'd be no news for 48 hours and all day it's been wall to wall hypotheticals and finger pointing by useless merkins herded outside St Vincent's.

I hope Phil pulls through. I hope he's well enough to walk, talk and feed himself again….think about that you pack of muckraking pr!cks. And if he can play cricket again, wonderful.

Grrr. I really loathe the media.
