Ok, this might be a sensitive topic but can be interesting as well. We all know that a lot of us here have partners, and I am interested to know what they think of your NBA hobby- both the game itself and the basketball cards.

I'll start.

My fiance Bobbi, believe it or not, gets jealous because of my "addiction" to follow the NBA. But she said that it's probably because she couldn't relate to it, not being a basketball literate. So just recently, she's been buying magazines and watching games so she can get into it, even if I told her she doesn't need to and I'd rather quit everything for her. So now, she's developed a liking to LeBron James, and claims he's her idol. LOL!!!! I reckon it's super sweet though that she's doing this for me. Now I can talk about basketball with her. :) But yeah I decided to quit collecting cards, at least for the meantime, because it can be a problem for us.

How bout you guys? Any interesting stories with your partners? If you don't have a partner currently, do you think your NBA will get between you and your girl? Hehe. Would you ditch your cards for her? Or the other way around? TSK TSK!

Re: Our ladies and our NBA. :D

My girl Danni, she knows the Mavs team, so that's a bonus, she knows a few other players/teams (when playing Live or 2K6 she catches on).

Doesnt enjoy watching games on Telly/DVD, tends to read a book, or play games on the computer or something. But will watch a game that I'm playing at the sports center and stuff.

She does love busting the wax with me. And opening my maildays up!!!
But doesnt go much on looking at my "watched items" or "purchased items" on ebay. lol. Who does!!!

Always a positive, and a negative, but never all negative. She supports me in collecting (praisies good cards, etc), but not my hobby and purchases. Which is just how I like it.

Re: Our ladies and our NBA. :D

I very similar to you Scotty.

My Fiance, Chenara, neither likes or dislikes me collecting cards. She loves to open packs with me and to date has pulled the best card (Jordan Patch). In saying that i dont think she likes me spending the money i do...:p

Re: Our ladies and our NBA. :D

This is a very interesting topic. Because really card collecting is something that is difficult to get into if you don't really have an interest in filling up all your free space with bits of cardboard that hold less literary value than books.

I think really, as a card collector I'll know the right person has come along if they can understand my love of the hobby even if they don't. Because that would mean the person is open minded enough for me hehehe....

But so far all the people that have come and gone in my life, family included think my hobby is strange and a waste of money (especially my father MEH).

I'm not changing for anyone, I am willing to compromise, but I'll always collect even if its just buying the odd pack of footy cards.

Good topic Kiddo!

My Girlfriend Jannelle doesnt like the idea of me buying pieces of cardboard lol. But when i bring in a box, she's the first one to open it lol. When she pulled the Chris Paul auto from my first reflections box, the first thing that came out of her mouth was "oh thats nice, is he good, is this worth heaps?" hehe....

The thing is, i dont spend to much on cards, my collections are limited, like no super duper big expensive cards. At the end of the day she knows i like it so shes happy to sit back and let me collect.

**Warning when looking on ebay for cards dont leave the comp whilst your gf is around.** LOL

hehe my girlfriend, Ally...she's up and down. Not overly disapproving of it, but likes it more when I show her my savings account. Basically Ive justified the last years worth of spending with the extra $'s ebay brings in..I basically buy with my profits...

of course every now and then I'll buy 8 drob auto's in one hit (so not from profit)...and initially I didnt tell her, but when I did, she asked to see them, and she realised how rare they were...so she saw the future investment sort of line...as long as I dont do it all the time and Im meeting our savings plan then she doesnt rally care...she gets more upset when I play the pokies

she lets me watch the spurs games at her place, and knows not to bother me...hehe and knows most of the spurs players, and some others..like I said "spurs lost to the mavs" and she said "ahh that dirk nowitski guy" so she pays attention when me and my mates get together...haha

she also played unisex with us, and could hit shots, so she was one of the better girl shooters in the comp....she scored 25 pts in a game once...with 5 threes...I was impressed!

Ive got a girlfriend that collects and understands that my hobby has been a part of my life a lot longer than she has. She understands how much I spend as its what I collect and if thats what it costs then so be it. I don't piss most of my money up against a pub unrinal like most of my mates so she is pretty happy the hobby stops me doing that every night after work etc.

I think the main bone of contention is how much eBay time I have but sniping helps that no end and I use eBay etc to relax and wind down from work.

My wife used to play rep basketball so she loves the sport but she doesn't have much interest in collecting. She loves watching sports so we go on "Sports Tours" all over the world as our holidays - We are hoping to catch a NBA game when we are in Miami next year :)

As for ditching my cards for my partner - It would never come to this or partner for cards........No way, anyone willing to put up with me and my habbits is worth more than any card collection in the WORLD - She's tops :smt060

Well my wife Adelle has NO interest in cards at all. I keep my best 30 KG cards in a couple of wooden display trays. I asked her one night which one she liked best - None! They were my BEST CARDS! Sparkles, patches autos etc!
She did once let me blow $200US on Larry Johnson 99-00 Flair masterpiece 1/1 for Xmas/B'day combined so I guess that's support!!
She doesn't watch hoops but does put up with my passion and knows it's important to me. In fact she told me the other day she is jealous she doesn't have a hobby with the same passion as I do.
I try not to spend our salary on cards - just sell old ones and find steals on ebay to stay above water. She doesn't mind me buying the odd cheapo however!! (Man who wears the pants aye!!)

Well! I'm the young'un of this group and currently am single!! hehehe.. although I may have some things planned out for the future and have already been in 1-2 teen relationships :p

However, when it comes down to it, remember that collecting cards is a hobby, not a lifestyle and definately not something as important as a relationship.

My wifey and I have alot in common. She was collecting back in 93-94 with her brother and has a stack of cards from back then herself. (I actually completed a couple of sets from her cards after meeting her.) She always helps me when busting boxes/packs and whenever she's in Melbourne she gets me packs from Kickz101.
She's super cool and I'm lucky she shares my hobby love.

My Fiance is pretty cool about me collecting...she just gets annoyed at me for always being on the computer.......especially on this site....

The funny thing is, we have just moved in together and it turns out her uncle is the postman at our new place.....he has promised me that he will take care of any packages addressed to me!! :)

Cheers
Matt

Too cool, Chad. Too cool!!!

Maybe we should ask TW for her opinions about her partner!!!

;-)

ATM, I'm still single, so not an issue.

BUT!!!!

The lovely lass I am persuing probably will enforce some limitations (as at times I go overboard!!! ;-) )
I play ball with her brother, and she has come to a few games, so she has some interest (and always pays out her brother who consistenly buys new shoes!!!).

But yeah, I'm hoping that whoever I get into a relationship will understand that it is part of who I am, and will not force me to rid myself of my collection.

Cool thread though, Carlos.
