Official Patty Mills Thread

Re: Trail Blazers Sign Patrick Mills

Awesome news, glad they signed him up. Hopefully it means he'll get some minutes soon.

Re: Trail Blazers Sign Patrick Mills

I think Mills could potentially go down as the best Australian to play NBA. Massive call with blokes like Longley and Bogut but I'm putting it out there. I would say he is the most talented Aussie to play in the NBA (assuming he gets some minutes)

I'll agree with you there.

He has the ability to be a starting point guard on a 8th seed team I would say. He needs to improve to become better but his speed, heart etc is enough for him to start on a bad team.

Longley wasn't statistically great but he only played like >30 minutes during all the years with the Bulls despite being the starter. Nobody will ever replace him as the best winner out of all Aussies in the NBA.

Bogut is loads more talented than Longley and people forget his 14 and 9 season that's incredible for the NBA. Like 14 and 9 those are solid stats. He could get better too.

Patty Mills if he improves, gets bigger, stronger, better going to the rack etc I could see him on a decent team averaging 16 ppg, 5 apg within the next 4 years or so.

Re: Trail Blazers Sign Patrick Mills

he could be like dajuan wagner. he's a combo guard from what i have heard, and his size doesn't help. hopefully he'll have the motivation to work past his doubters

Re: Trail Blazers Sign Patrick Mills

there are other leagues he could go to before going to the nba.. lots of players have done it. But being stuck at the bottom, if he gets cut or something, that's even harder for him to really make it to the nba... he could always go to D-league i guess but yeah.. pity it was portland who picked him..

Re: Trail Blazers Sign Patrick Mills

I don't know, I think patty will get playing time. Think about it - B-Roy is a shooting guard who can fill in at small forward in a pinch. Miller can play both guard positions easily - as can Blake. Bayless .... saw very little playing time last season and when he did play, wasn't that much to speak of. If Patty can prove himself, he'll get minutes ahead of bayless and could see time in a small line-up of aldridge (C), Outlaw (PF) Webster/B-Roy (SF), Miller (SG) and Mills (SG). I think this new look portland team has a lot of flexibility in what it can do.

UPDATE 18/10: It appears I may have been a little premature with my excitement (thanks to Chucko for pointing this out). This is a direct quote from one of the posters at Blazers Edge:

This may appear like we signed Mills to keep him, but actually this is Mills signing to become a free agent. The Blazers had to give Mills a Required Tender, which is just a one year offer, or he would have automatically become a free agent. The Blazers didn’t want him to sign that offer. They wanted him to leave it unsigned and go sign with another team in Europe or elsewhere. That way they would have retained his rights, as they do Freeland, Claver, etc.

Instead, Mills signed the offer. So now the Blazers either have to keep him as the 15th player, or they have to waive him by Oct 27 and then he becomes an unrestricted free agent. I doubt they will keep him as the 15th player, so the Blazers will no longer have exclusive rights to him.

The Blazers also can not trade him for 30 days because he is now a signed draft rookie

I certainly hope this isn’t the case. Guess we will have to wait and see. What are the odds of another team signing an unrestricted free agent rookie at the start of the season? Quite low, you’d think.

Essentially looks like he will either be the 15th player (unlikely) or they will waive which will mean he will be a freeagent in 30 days, which is not a good situation for Pat.

highly unlikely bro... 2s and 3s are loaded... webster/outlaw/batum/roy/fernandez
1s are blake and miller.. with a backup for bayless and mills..

bayless and mills would get a maximum 6-8 minutes per game among themselves if they're lucky.. blake can play 30m/gm and miller can do that as well.. roy sometimes plays the 1 and might play with webster and fernandez on occasion if they want to go small

Re: Paddy Mills Season Progress Thread

Blazers sign second-round pick Mills

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Trail Blazers have signed second-round draft pick Patrick Mills and exercised options on center Greg Oden, forwards Nicolas Batum and Rudy Fernandez and guard Jerryd Bayless.

Terms of the deal with Mills, a guard from Australia who played at Saint Mary's, were not released. He was the 55th overall pick in last June's draft.

The Blazers exercised the team's fourth-year option on Oden, and their three-year option on the others. That will keep all players under contract through next season.

Oden was the No. 1 overall draft pick and Fernandez was acquired via trade in the 2007 draft. Batum and Bayless were acquired via trades in the 2008 draft.

From the Associated Press.

With Miller and Blake fighting it out for the majority of minutes at PG and with a young talent like Bayless still struggling to even get minutes i'm not sure that Mills will see any NBA action this season at all.
