MANLY'S owner and chairman Scott Penn was locked in emergency talks with coach Des Hasler last night to try to persuade him to reject a whopping $2.2 million offer to join the Canterbury Bulldogs after tomorrow's grand final
Hasler is torn between his loyalty to the Sea Eagles and an incredible $750,000-a-season offer that would make him the third-highest paid coach in the history of the game behind Newcastle's Wayne Bennett and Melbourne's Craig Bellamy.
The Daily Telegraph revealed last week the Bulldogs had been throwing a dummy about supposedly chasing a coach from the English Super League to camouflage their interest in Hasler.
The Bulldogs offer is a package deal for Hasler and his recruitment guru Noel Cleal, the man largely credited for identifying the outstanding rookies for Hasler to build a side capable of reaching tomorrow's grand final against the Warriors.
Penn met Hasler in his office at Brookvale at about 5pm last night and emerged an hour later without being able to strike a deal

Newcastle Knights have confirmed Danny Buderus will be joining the team for 2012 on a one year contract.

I know what you mean. He was also supposedly signed, sealed and delivered to the Roosters last time he was off contract but still re-signed here. I'll believe it when I see it.

IT would have been unthinkable three years ago, but the Bulldogs are now seriously considering having another crack at getting superstar $onny Bill Williams back to Belmore.

Canterbury is the only NRL club $onny Bill can play for next season under the terms of an agreement thrashed out when he walked mid-contract in 2008.

"I've never said we wouldn't have Sonny back," Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg said.

But the Bulldogs boss insists he would only deal with Sonny and not his agent, Khoder Nasser, who orchestrated the move to French rugby three years ago.

"Time heals all wounds and you don't slam the door shut on anyone," Greenberg said.

"If his next deal is about money, he'll go back and play football in France, but if he wants to test himself again in the toughest competition in the world, he'll come back to the NRL..

"Whoever is coaching us next year will have a view on it and decide whether we show some interest.

"I'd want to deal with him personally, and not his agent."

The Bulldogs still have Sonny Bill under a legally binding agreement that he cannot play for another NRL club until 2013, when his original contract, which was $400,000 a season, was due to expire.

The Warriors two years ago approached Greenberg about paying compensation for a clearance but the deal fell through.

They would consider an amount of around $200,000 to release Williams now if any other NRL clubs were interested in signing him.

"Whatever happens, he's an elite athlete and it would be great to see him back playing NRL."

Williams is a free agent after the rugby union World Cup final in New Zealand later this month.

"I don't want to make a hasty decision," he said recently. "It's not right for myself or my family.

"I've just got to assess the situation after the World Cup. At this stage, I'm trying to push everything away and make everything else irrelevant and just solely concentrate on rugby."

Benji, Quade in hybrid game

IMAGINE Kiwi captain Benji Marshall going into battle against Wallabies five-eighth Quade Cooper. Or big Manu Vatuvei lining up opposite new rugby sensation James O'Connor.

Top-secret plans are well under way to stage a hybrid game between a combined Kangaroos and Wallabies team against an All Blacks and Kiwis side at ANZ Stadium next year.

ANZ Stadium has signed up with a private promoter for the venue and management rights.

Channel Nine has already been approached about televising the game and leading players have been told they will earn up to $80,000 for a one-off appearance.

By the end of this month, David Gallop and John O'Neill will have proposals on their desks. So, too, will their Kiwi counterparts.

I'm told the size of the offers will be almost too good to refuse, particularly if the players find out how much they can earn and then put pressure on administrators.

A proposal is being finalised and a date for the game - probably at the end of next season - will be revealed soon.

ROOSTERS coach Brian Smith is so close to losing his dressing room it's not funny.

And don't think this is just another bag Brian Smith yarn because we don't get on.

Hand on the Bible, I know of two senior players at Bondi Junction who want out.

They can't stand playing their football under Smith's highly regimented schoolteacher style.

I won't name them because it will only make their lives more uncomfortable and more difficult.

I do know they have both approached their managers about the situation.

Newcastle Knights would beg to differ. However if you were one of the players he p1issed off the it was probably the best thing that ever happened to your career. (Snowden/Perry/Walsh.....the list goes on)

Sharks player charged with assault

A Cronulla Sharks player has been charged with assaulting his girlfriend during a domestic dispute.

Isaac Gordon, 24, is alleged to have hit his 31-year-old partner on Thursday night at a home in Sylvania, in southern Sydney.

A day later, the rugby league winger drove from Sydney and presented himself to police at Collarenebri station, en route to his home town of Brewarrina in the state's northwest.

Without naming Gordon, NSW police confirmed a 24-year-old man had handed himself in at 9pm (AEST) on Friday.

He was charged with assault causing bodily harm and common assault, and was granted conditional bail to appear in Sutherland Local Court on October 5

Bloody Brett Stewart still can't get it through his head. He was suspended for being a drunken idiot and putting a negative light on the game....not because of the sexual assault charge that he was later acquitted for.

The application for the Sharks development is open from tomorrow 5/10 till 5/12, any rejections could cost them dearly if our sharkie supporters know anything else re the assesment and potential outcome if there is any rejections?

A THIRD Hopoate has quit Manly for Parramatta.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal that rising star Jamil Hopoate, who some suggest has more potential than older brother Will, has signed with the Eels.

Details of the deal are to be confirmed but Jamil is to move to the Eels with Will and their father John, who will have a coaching role.

Sources claim the Hopoate family will shift across town for a combined figure of about $800,000 a season.

Manly offered Will close to $500,000 a year but he still walked away from Brookvale.

He has agreed to play with Parramatta for two years from 2014, after his two-year Mormon mission.

John is set to collect $200,000 as part of Parramatta's coaching staff.

Jamil, a utility forward in the Jamie Buhrer mould, is just 17 and played his junior representative footy with Manly.

Dymock to coach Dogs

Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs to appoint Jim Dymock as full time coach | thetelegraph.com.au

JIM Dymock has won the battle to coach Canterbury-Bankstown next year.

The Daily Telegraph understands the Bulldogs will announce Dymock as head coach tomorrow or Friday.

However, the deal will only be for one season - maybe two - as the club continues to hunt down dual Manly premiership-winning coach Des Hasler.

Hasler signed a mid-season option to coach at Brookvale again next year and will honour his commitment.

But if Dymock and Hasler are only committed for one year, there is every chance the Sea Eagles coach could still shift to Belmore for 2013.

Dymock has earned his chance after winning five of his eight matches as interim coach this year following the mid-season demise of Kevin Moore.

A 12-month deal isn't an overwhelming endorsement for Dymock but it does give the former Test player a chance at the top level. And he enters the job with the full support of the players.

The Bulldogs discussed Mick Potter, Nathan Brown, Terry Matterson and Justin Morgan as possible coaches.

The anticipated approach to NSW coach Ricky Stuart never eventuated.

"As we have said over the past month, we will complete our process and then make an announcement in and around the grand final," Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg said. "The grand final has now passed and hopefully we can announce something later in the week.

"We haven't speculated on any individual names and we're not about to start."

In July, Dymock told The Daily Telegraph he wanted to be more than interim coach.

"I don't want to be assistant coach all my life. I want a crack," Dymock said.

Canterbury have offered Hasler $2.2 million in an attempt to poach him and his coaching staff, including recruitment guru Noel Cleal.

Hasler would never admit it publicly, but he is at odds with Manly's rookie chief operating officer David Perry and football and leagues club chairman Bob Reilly.

The players are firmly in their coach's corner and would be filthy at Perry and Reilly if Hasler walked away.

There is talk of a rebel ticket to oust Reilly at the upcoming Manly elections.

Manly are in negotiations to sign Hasler, who has a deal at Manly worth between $400,000 and $450,000.

After Sunday's success, Hasler could command around $700,000 a season
