Perhaps they realised they did not have the resources to do both, maybe they could not afford both contracts with the NRL, who knows - im just repeating what people (who seem to have been right on this issue) have told me.
i've spoken to Select today & they informed me that they handed back the LICENCE and it was given to ESP, They didn't win it in a price war bid they were the only one's who wanted it. Select said it was to costly to pay the royalties & production costs to expensive. YES there will be a 2nd set & it is due out Mid July.

Handed back the license? Are they confusing themselves with Nathan Tinkler? If they keep handing licenses back there will be no business left.
They have basically told you they cant make money off NRL cards. We all know that is a complete load of BS. Both the 2011 series are almost sold out and if they were not making money they would not be making a second series (2010 anyone...).
Now you know why Wang, despite having a shop and online store, is putting all his cards on ebay - he is about to be a couple hundred grand per year out of pocket.
2. Seriously, the NRL want to make money out of cards and tazos, when they should be encouraging companies to do things like this because of the KIDS. Yes - the kids. Sure, there are serious collectors and they should be catered for. But if you get the kids in with tazos and footy cards...then they are talking about players, talking about games, watching games, pester powering their parents, and building a life long association with a sport/team.
The NRL is lazy. They just charge a licence fee and let whoever do whatever.
PS - as much as there is debate about Select, they have always been good to me. And I have enjoyed the cards from 2000 to now. Maybe I'm not fussy except for production standards (which I agree slipped a little in 2010/11) and my only real grumble was Team cards in lieu of a 12th player card.
But as a person who collects to keep my memories of RL fresh over the years, I just like having one series a year, and Select have provided that. I don't particularly care who produces it, as long as there is a set each RL season.
