In my time collecting, i have lost count how many times I have seen this kind of thread from various collectors thinking of collecting NBA cards

Maybe you have some helpful tips on who to collect for those thinking of making the change into NBA :)

To me, collecting is made up of a few different ways of doing it.... some people stick to one but many will have various things on the go at the same time

Player collectors
Team collectors
Set collectors
Just trying to make money collectors :)

Collecting your favorite player from you childhood is always fun or taking a punt on the new guy to make it big next. I personally find set collecting on the side is a good way of having a back up plan if I can't find or afford something for my MJ pc then I can always look for set cards :D

any tips can be left here if you have any

regards, Terry

Most important question for starters. What and who do you like ? What is your heart telling you ?

Most collectors are player collectors. Here only your heart can help you out. It may tell you to collect Oliver Miller or Big Country Bryant Reeves, smaller guys like Mugsy Bogues or Jose Barea or Dunking Champs like J-Rich or Nate Robinson. Observe the market, find out how many cards of your player are out there and how expensive they usually are. Make up your mind on whether you can afford the cards and then start collecting or , if too expensive, switch to another player.

Team collecting is very difficult these days, with all the player or sometimes even team (Sonics, Hornets, Grizzlies) movement going on. So if you dont live in that area or have a strong relationship there, this may not be the best thing to do. Too much to collect, too many special things to be regarded... so in general not the best idea.
An exception could be collecting 1 autographed card of each player who ever played for your favourite team and scored at least 1000 Points, as an example.

Set collecting can be very nice, but be aware that complete sets generally trade at a discount to the singles. So, when trying to sell the set later, you may naturally have to take a loss.

Collecting as an investment ... Two questions to be answered. Do you like older cards ? Do you like Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant ? If the answer is no on both, dont even try to make your collection an investment. Its a very long shot, that your cards will yield you a good return over the long term.

Another important thing to consider when starting to collect is your budget... you can by all means be a player collector or team collector, but if you don't have much money then it will be near impossible - unless you set yourself a budget or limit - eg collect everything of a certain player that is not game used or auto'd, or anything limited to 50 or greater - that means you can still pick up a nice little collection of somebody without having to worry about fighting for the numerous 1/1s or inserts #/10 etc etc.

Don't ask people who you should collect (unless you are undecided over a few you have chosen yourself)..... watch some games & collect someone you really enjoy watching play & fits within your budget.

if you need more tips just keep reading :)

Re: NBA card collecting ??? - not sure where to start

Do you guys think collecting Chris Paul will be alright budget wise or are his cards too expensive?

Re: NBA card collecting ??? - not sure where to start

There are a lot of CP3 collectors so when the rarer stuff comes up you have alot of battles going on so prices can soar

Re: NBA card collecting ??? - not sure where to start

i think its important to go by your budget, but i also think its important to start on the cheaper items, base UD or panini now, so u can get a feel of collecting a set and also appreciate busting a GU or auto of a certain player and how hard it is. I think it helps look around and to find a product you like and collect every year its released like chrome, or limited.

Re: NBA card collecting ??? - not sure where to start

What about collecting Blake Griffin if I don't really plan on getting logomans etc, and Id be happy with any autos/patch/jersey? Would the price dip alot if he doesnt turn out to be a star player?

Chances are, it will....

Especially if the player has been hyped up to deliver, and he doesn't. The higher the player, the harder and further they fall...

Though... thats for those that care and collect for $$$$$$

Great tips everyone :)

Collecting is not always about making money ! it should be fun and a bonus if your chosen collection goes up in value :D

Keep those ideas coming

No truer words have been spoken, once you start collecting to make money you lose the fun factor and it becomes more of a chore or a job. Set aside a certain amount of money you are comfortable spending each week/month and have fun

I think I have to comment on Team Collecting. I've seen a couple comments suggesting against it, but my thought is team collecting is perfect, because you can adjust your goals based on your income at the time. You can do mini chases within the big chase (the team) or you can just pick up what comes around cheaply.

I think the biggest problem now days is the lack of appreciation for a base card, and perhaps the companies are responsible in some respects for producing too many products and rushing designs. Almost all my favourite card designs are from 1993/94. Sometimes simple is better. Appreciate the base and you'll always have a smile, as its easy to come by and there's plenty of it to chase. Add whatever else when you can and collecting a team can be fun.

As an example I am a Timberwolves collector within that right now I am focusing on two things the Base Chase and the Kevin Love Absolute chase. One is a lot cheaper than the other, and one has fewer cards to chase than the other, but they're all Wolves baby!

I happen to think team collecting, if you TRULY love the team, is the best form of collecting because it does offer so many variations!

I started breaking old boxes off ebay and worked my way up to newer stuff {sidenote: if anyone wants any 1996 upper deck sp cards i'm your man :p}. Overall i try to fill whole base sets at a time and shop around for cards i am missing however I'm also a Ray Allen fan and have collected well over a hundred of his cards and have a heap more coming. Its all down to personal preference. I keep track of most of my cards in becketts as its nice and easy to catalog collections. There are some great ebay sellers to browse through for boxes as well.
