Well I found something this morning whilst looking through the garage for something else. It was the stamps released by AUPOST to celebrate the centenary of cricket 1877 - 1977. This particular item is autographed by one of the greats of the game, Jeff Thompson. From memory, my Mother, who lined up for ages to get me this stamp set was told that less than 100 of the sets were autographed by Thommo. Here are the pics.
Here is a picture of the first day cover we also got on the first day of issue.
It is a set of stamps such as the bottom cricket one that is released to commemorate a special occasion and it is stamped by the post office usually with a special stamp that signifies it was stamped on the day of issue.
Here is a definition of the term first day cover by a stamp collecting body here in AU
'A First Day Cover is an envelope to which stamp(s) are affixed. Then a first day of issue cancel ties the stamp(s) to the cover.
Early First Day Covers Pre-1930 were usually prepared by the individual collector until private firms began to produce illustrated First Day Covers eg Wesley Cover Service, Royal, Excelsior, Parade etc. Most covers pre-1970 were addressed. In 1970 Australia Post officially produced Illustrated First Day Covers which are generally collected unaddressed.'
