3 Possible Trade Destinations For Russell Westbrook

With Kevin Durant out of the picture in OKC, it's time for the Thunder to address the most important issue at hand: Russell Westbrook. With Westbrook being an unrestricted free agent next summer, this puts GM Sam Presti in a difficult position. It's hard to imagine that Russ would want to stick around, and they can't afford to lose him for nothing like they did with KD. So, if they can't sign him to an extension, the Thunder will
reportedly explore the trade market for Russ.
The market for Westbrook should be very interesting. Since he'll be a free agent next summer, the only teams willing to trade for him will be the ones who believe he will stick around long-term. And for those who are interested, why give up your assets now if you can just wait to sign him in the summer? That's what opposing GMs will be thinking. But if OKC gets the sense that Russ won't stick around, they will HAVE to trade him for whatever they can get. In the coming weeks this situation will become more clear, but for now let's see who might be interested in trading for the five-time All-Star.
3. Boston Celtics
The Celtics certainly have the assets to pull off a trade for Westbrook, and with Al Horford in Boston, Russ might actually want to stay there long-term. If the Celts were to give up Jae Crowder, Avery Bradley and Marcus Smart in exchange for Westbrook, that would probably be a big enough haul for OKC to accept the deal. It would be a big risk for Boston to take, but it would certainly be worth exploring.
2. Miami Heat
Miami is another team who could enter into the Westbrook sweepstakes. If Wade stays, the Heat would have quite a roster if you add Russ into the mix. Miami would likely give up Goran Dragic and Justice Winslow, and that would be hard for OKC to turn down. With Dragic locked into his contract for a few more seasons, OKC would get some stability at the point guard position.
1. Los Angeles Lakers
The most likely destination for Westbrook is the Lakers. Westbrook grew up in LA, went to UCLA, and has long been seen as the next potential star there. Westbrook's game and superstardom off the court make him a perfect fit in LA as well, making the risk of trading for him not too high. He'd likely be willing to stick around, and trading for him during the season would give the Lakers a chance to offer him the most money this summer. If LA sent Clarkson, Randle, Larry Nance and future pick to the Thunder, it would give OKC a nice young core of guys in return. With that being said, the Lakers front office should try to avoid giving up Ingram, Russell, or too many assets, since there's a solid chance they could keep those guys around and sign Westbrook in free agency without having to surrender multiple assets.
