Know anything about metal detectors !!

Hoping to get some info as im possibly going up north with a mate to do some gold prospecting.
Metal detectors seem to sell for as little as $129 or thousands.
Any help would be much appreciated

I can't help you with which one to buy, but I do know that it is WAAAYYYY harder than it looks, looking for gold with a metal detector.
I had a friend, who's father did the same thing. He could not stick at it though, sort of lost hope
He got called into an indoor beach volleyball centre once to help find a gold ring that a lady had lost while playing. He was not able to find the ring, but a friend of his who also was there (with his own metal detector) did eventually find it.

Thanks...im guessing half the fun is the thrill of looking for it.
We arent expecting to strike it rich but i guess you never know.
Need to do a lot more research before we head out thats for sure

I think it might have something to do with the strength of the detector ! From what I have been told, they are easy to use

Correct... i have used one a long time ago down on the beach.
The minelab detectors so i read can go down as lot as 6 ft !!
Its a question of hiring them or buying one of the cheaper ones and still have a half decent chance of mojo...

I used to use them a lot when I was younger...... the cheap ones are a piece of junk & all you'll usually find is cans, bottle caps etc..... I believe in some of the better ones you can set them to try & "weed out" the junk more or less... something like a mineral/metal setting.

Didnt have to do a lot of searching to find many complaints about the Seben brand that i was looking at.

A step up in quality (and price) would be the bounty hunter.....they have a few models but will require more looking into which suits our needs

The gpx4000 and gpx4500 are the best detectors on the market and are 100% australian made.
If there is any gold prospecting shops where your going you should just hire 1 and that would cost around $150-$250 per day or you can just hire cheaper detectors from minelab.

Goodluck on the mojo and here is a few vids from a guy that can find 34 ounces in 2 weeks.
34 x $1200 per ounce= $40,800 in 2 weeks

Thats just insane...think we will be lucky to hit 1 ounce !!
Renting is an option..but as we are going for about a week its going to cost a fortune...looks like i can pick up a decent quality good brand for around the $500 range

If buying is the route we decide on itll probably be a new one.
Will know whats going on mid week and then the hunt begins.

Note...1 ounce = 1 case of cards

Goodluck on this trip.
For your next adventure i would recommend gold hunting in gold bearing river systems If you only want 1 ounce, why dont you go highbanking for gold or sluicing because you are almost guaranteed to find around 1 ounce per day or more if you know what you are doing and work hard for a few hours per day.

Prospectors that highbank/sniper and sluice can find more gold than a prospector with a detector and thats only because they go home every day with gold and not just once a week or somtimes nothing with a detector.
The bloke in the vid is one of australias best and thats what he does for a living is drink beer and hunt the shiny stuff.

We will probably stick with detectors this time round..the bonus with river is keeping cool as well i guess

Bought the missus one about six weeks ago, just a cheap one for down at the park/beach, from a warehouse here. Cost me $75 new; no name brand, but has settings and stuff to filter out what you're searching for. She's only used it a couple of times, hasn't really found anything, but the places she's looked aren't that promising to start with She also knows a couple that live on some acreage in Kalgoorlie that are always updating their detection equipment with the proceeds from their latest hunt. So from that I'd assume that going for quality certainly pays off. Could always ask if they have a decent second hand one for sale if you want... I think choosing a metal detector is very similar to buying a lotto ticket, the more expensive the greater the prospects, just depends how often you're gonna use it and how badly you want to uncover something.

I detect quite a bit on my spare time and use a Fisher 1236 X-2. I had to get REALLY familiar with it to be able to figure out what was under the ground. This detecter gives off different sound frequencies for the type of metal it detected and how deep it is. I learned that a very high pitch squeel was aluminum and a broad deep beep was a quarter or a dime. Other great readings were older pennies. It has a sweet discrimination setting where you can discriminate all the "Junk". I know that if I sweep over something from left to right and it only beeps once instead of twice that it is junk or a zinc penny. It won't even beep at all on nails, pop tabs, bolts, nuts = "JUNK" It also has a pin pointer to tell you EXACTLY where it is and how deep it is.

In order to find gold on that machine, you have to set the discrimination setting on low. The best way to do that is to actually have a piece of gold and scan over it adjusting the discrimination until you get a reading. DO NOT GO ANY LOWER IN DISCRIMINATION THAT THAN or you will pick up alot more junk. The frustrating thing about gold is that it is a dull metal that does not give off the greatest readings and can easily be confused with other metals as far as the detector is concerned. UNLESS YOU GET A TOP OF THE LINE machine (THOUSANDS OF $$). Mine is great for just browsing around camp grounds, school yards and parks. I have done very well at ski resorts where people dump change and rings when they fall or take their gloves off (100's of dollars!)

A buddy of mine uses a BIGFOOT and it is pretty dang accurate at determining what is being detected on a screen digitally.

It also depends on what type of coil you have for depth and distance you have to get to the item to detect it. The larger the coil the better the readings

Anyway, cool hobby even for me a 27 year old athelete haha

Thanks for the help on settings jason....something to remember.

Nailed it on the head there clint...$$$ will make a difference however i just cant justify me spending megga dollars on something that (at this stage) is a once a year thing.
Im sure that buying a good secondhand older model would be aok but just dont know enough about them yet to risk it...
