jackson jive skit...hey hey it's hump day

i think the reason that many people are angry about it is simply because of the use of "blackface", if you dont understand why people may be angry about it you should probably read this-

As soon as i saw them come on stage last night i knew there was going to be some stink kicked up about it! regardless of the ethnicity of the performers, or their intent, the use of "blackface" is probably not such a good idea these days!

Just my opinion:)

Yeah true!

Has anyone seen Tropic Thunder when Robert Downey Jr changes from an Aussie to an African American to play the role in the movie (This happens in the movie)? That's pretty much Blackface I think?

Yeah I can see where you are coming from there......after reading the link you gave me. That explains why many US residents would get a bit upset but that is why I guess the lead in the skit (The guy playing Michael Jackson) said he would not do that in the US. I guess aussies don't have that history of taking the p*ss out of the African Americans through theatre like US do so it isn't offensive to me BUT I do see why others who know the history of the "Blackface" got upset.

I did note this from the link you posted:
By the mid-20th century, changing attitudes about race and racism effectively ended the prominence of blackface makeup used in performance in the U.S. and elsewhere. It remains in relatively limited use as a theatrical device, mostly outside the U.S., and is more commonly used today as social commentary or satire

Thanks for that - Good post

eah, it was a bit cringey, but also I also found myself smirking slightly at it. I thought the funnier bit was "Michael" painted white. But I do think Connick was a bit precious about the whole thing. And then seeing him in that preacher vid, "hello pot, meet kettle..." And yeah, I'm sure Downey Jr's role didn't cause as much flack with US audiences. Or how about Chris Rock with his "Cracker" jokes on stand-up shows? Where's the outrage there? Personally I think he's a crack-up, but where's the consistancy? Or the Waynes brothers with White Chicks? Again, I thought it was a funny movie, but according to this reaction I wonder what would've happened if a movie was made about 2 white cops going undercover as "sistahs"? And yeah, when u add in the fact most of the members were "ethnic", it makes it a bit sillier, IMO...

thought it was a crap act but not racist at all people are way tooooo bloody sensative these days get ova it

Mmmm, interesting response considering you said this in your FIRST reply:

yeh yeh I know but I just thought about it a little more and it was not racist but definitely not funny. Just imagine if they put that on U.S. tv.. different story.
