internet speed ?

Evening people..... just a quick question for the tech heads... recently upgraded with my server to 512.....it states 1.5mbps.
Does that sound about right.
Expected an increase in speed from 256 and its just not happened .

Maybe the porn you are trying to d/l is just cached therefore the speed is the same ;-)

Steve, if you jumped from 256 to 512 you should expect a significant jump in speed for downloading and gameplay. Your page loading may be slowed by your PC's capabilities......that being said have you changed all your settings in your router / modem & PC to reflect the changes ???

Thanks richo..finally some real help..wasnt aware i had to..
Just got of the phone with my server and got me to download a file and tell him what the speed was...told me it was aok..
Wasnt aware i had to change any settings and they didnt recommend any !!

Depends where you are downloading from .. normally an upgrade from 256 DSL to 512 DSL you should see an increase in speed. If its reporting 1.5mbps that would suggest you are on 1500, and you should see a HUGE increase.

Have you contacted your ISP ? Who are you with ? I understand there is a cable cut somewhere between AU and the US which may affect speeds to overseas sites.

EDIT : you shouldnt have to change any settings. On 512 DSL you should expect a max download speed of about 55kb/sec.

Noticed a slight increase in speed, but this gap where nothing happens is annoying !! happens on any site inc ozcards

DSL 256 should get 27-28kb/sec
DSL 512 should get 55-56kb/sec
DSL 1500 should get 165-168kb/sec
Optus Cable should get 900-1000kb/sec

ADSL2 is another matter all together.

Sounds like the speed ok as im getting 55-56 kbps.
Its just this click on a link and wait for 4-9 seconds before it starts thats frustrating..
Ive done everything i can think of.... defragged,cleared cookies,no nasties picked up on scans.
Maybe richos on to something as he would have a better idea than most..
Couldnt find any settings for my modem bud..ill keep searching...

Most modems are auto detect, so you shouldnt have to change anything there. Has your PC done this previously ?

Just cant put my finger on this short delay i get ...
It is somewhat minimal..... the wife reakons im just impatient
