As I said, it has been some time since I collected basketball cards (I don't think I've ever even owned a Kobe or Iverson card lol) and I am kind of perplexed at what has become of the hobby.

No one seems to care about base cards, most base cards look like inserts from the 90s (tons of foil and holograms and such), the market is flooded with cards from sets of 1/100s and even down to 1/1s (are 1/1s worth anything when there are thousands of different cards labelled 1/1?), Upper Deck as far as I can tell don't even make NBA cards and Panini have so many different sets it is ridiculous. I'm not really complaining, it is just a shock to the system, virtually nothing in is the same. Except a lot of people are still going mental for Jordan's. I've only been looking at new cards for the past week so I might be wrong on some of my observations (let me know).

Anyway I got back into cards because I decided to finish of my set of 1993-94 Upper Deck cards. I had the base set finished when I was a kid but the inserts were tough to come by and expensive back in the day. But I've just finished that set (all Mr June, Michael Jordan's Flight Team, Locker Talk etc) and am looking to start a new set. Not sure which yet, something with nice base cards, interesting inserts, and not ridiculously expensive.

Hey Mate
Welcome back to the jungle. Yes a lot has changed over the last 15 years.
Panini has the sole market when it come to NBA cards Upper Deck do College cards hopefully this will change soon.
If you want a reasonably cheap set to chase I would say 2011-12 Past & Present you basically get the base set out of one hobby box.
Not really sure what else to suggest as I am not a set collector.
I am sure others have a better idea.
Good Luck

welcome im another comeback collector (2 weeks into it) the mind set of set base collecting is definitely gone from what i can tell. I'm focusing my collecting on 3 of my favourite players.

Actually that was one of the few sets I have been looking at that or 2012-13. The base set cards have that nice retro look (not ridiculously flashy) and the inserts are fairly original too.

Yeah I am thinking of starting a Penny Hardaway collection. I still have a few from back in the day to start me off. What players are you collecting?

welcome back to the hobby! you're not wrong about how much things have changed, especially with how common autos have become!

I remember flipping out when 'autographics' were released and still shocked to this day at how little value they have! How many did Upper Deck produce?? I remember them being rare... shows how much stock Upper Deck was printing!

Welcome back. Nice take on the hobby returnee.

Skybox produced Autographics, not UD. To give an idea, as you may know they over produced cards back n the 90's. These days a limited run may be 3000 cases. Back then most stuff would have been at least 5000 cases. With at least 12 boxes a case and 2 series per set, and about 12 different sets, that would maybe be about 1.5 million boxes. There are about 1 autographic every 2 boxes. That's 750000 autographics. There were about 120 in the set, so that would mean about 6000 of each card.

Maybe sounds too many, but given the short print were /100 or /50, there would probably be at least 1000 of each.
