Well after working nearly 3 years of shift work, where playing sport is virtually impossible coz of the shifts i work, i have gotten really badly out of shape, before i started this current job i was playing Bball twice a week + indoor cricket + outdoor cricket, now i have done nothing

So i got my bike all serviced and back on teh road and started riding today, but it hink i may have overdone it for starters after not having riden a bike for about 2 years i went out and did about 10KMs Flat Out around a rather hilly bendigo and now my legs (and arse =D> ) are feeling it, HAHA!

hoping to drop about 10-15kgs over the next few months :D

Good luck with it mate! I know about that myself. I gained some weight after an operation, lots of sitting, watching telly and eating
Just got out amongst it and played some sport to drop the extra kg's off. Cut down on meal portion size a little maybe and you should do it.
The hurting will go away after you repeatedly start playing/riding/etc a few times a week. I certainly know how bad your muscles get after not doing it for a few weeks let alone a few years!
Make sure you ease back into cricket slowly as your joints and muscles really cop it, especially if you're a bowler.

wont be playing sport Brad, still in the job with the shitty hours, just the riding... but i know the feeling about Sore Shoulders first week back at cricket for the season always hurt, coz yeh i was a bowler when i was playing...

Just ease into it and eventually try to be doing at least 45-60 mins of hard cardio every day, high intensity stuff, that'll get the weight off. Then do some weights and some resistance stuff to tone up, you don't want to look all saggy after trimming up. Push ups and crunches are your friends :) You'll feel better and have alot more energy and it'll lower the stress levels which I think you may be dealing with alot lately. Stick with it and enjoy it and it'll pay off.

mattyj, great to hear you doing it.

I had a similar situation a few years back where after having a broken foot, I got lazy and didn't do much excercise, and with eating too much take away I ballooned out to a point where I knew I had to do something!

So with my Fiance, at the start of 2005 we started exercising at the gym 3 days a week, we gave up McDonalds/KFC/Pizza and started eating healthy and looking after ourselves.

To this day we still havent had McDonalds or KFC (going on 800 plus days since we have had it) yet we still eat really well. Lots of great home cooked meals.

To date, my fiance has lost 26kgs and kept it off and I have lost 30kgs.

We both have never felt better! Sure its tough but if I can do it, anyone can!

Good luck! Its worth it!

Cheers
Matt

hahaha just ease it into it like funk said dude! do too much in a few sessions and then you won't feel like continuing!

maybe one day you'll be able to play ball at my level.. just get into shape matty.. :p

Get a home trainer and hook the bike up so you can ride in front of the TV like I do when I'm too lazy to go outside or don't have the time for a decent ride.

All you need is here Matty ;-) I've kept the weight down despite my diet by combining this with work and training. Not at my crazy thin weight but low enough for what I need.

Well it seems to be working, i rode to work today, and a hill that last week i had to walk the bike up coz it was too steep, i got over no problems today, so i must be getting fitter :) also cracked 50kms/hr today :)

awesome job matty! good to see it's paying off.. :p

next up.. the BEEP TEST.

The rewards will come quick Matty and congrats. Its also ALWAYS better to ride up the hill in a low gear than get off and walk. That uses far more energy but if your goal is weight loss then it can't hurt. Just watch those big gears mate or you knees will tell you about it.

Nice work Matty....good to hear you are doing something about it rather than dwelling on it.

I went from about 87 to 94 kilo's over Christmas and have found it hard to remove the excess.

We have started a "Biggest Loser" type comp within our footy team to try to encourage some weight loss and tone within our team. I have found that good as it is nice to have others to compare against and help keep you motivated! :D

Food is a fuel. Eat less than what you expend and you are right. And don't start diets or exercise regiems that are unrealistic and that you are unable to maintain. Lifestyle is much better than a quick fix. Just substitute healthy options for the non healthy options you currently choose. Whether is just walking to the shops instead of driving etc etc.

I walk to work 3 days a week (thats all i work ;) ) which is about a 15 minutes each way, as well as walking to the train station for uni 4 days a week, which is about 20 minutes away, which is about 4 hours of walking a week right there!

I'm also playing basketball again, and watching the older guys (im only 21, they are all pretty much pushing 30-35 age bracket) wheeze and cough after about 10 minutes has convinced me to try and get fitter.

Go on ya Mat, and hope those kilos keep falling off and hopefully you can get back into the basketball!

Yeah, it's much better (and easier) to do it in your 20s, than into your 30s or beyond. The other key is to be patient. Success is not going to be overnight.
