Hi guys,

Long story short, I was going through a box of my old collectables from when I was younger at home and I had totally forgotten about this item.

The story is in 1993 a person who was involved with our local junior cricket team passed away and there was a benefit night held for him. It was hosted by Ray Hadley and there were many items like this up for sale.

This was purchased for me by my mum as a present (I was 13 at the time) and it was donated by Cricket NSW.

Now I know the signature is legit and I think at worst it is a game issued jersey (hence the long sleves - cant remember them selling long sleeves in stores). It does show some use on the lettering and does have some marks on the shirt so im not sure if it is game worn or not? I really dont know. There isnt a name or number on the back which is consistent with the card I found as well (see below). It is a small size.

Anyone have any idea of what something like this would go for? Either way i wont be selling it just thought I would share it here!

Thats awesome in so many ways! Never realised they had buttons on the sleeves, thought they were elastic, and I can't remember them selling long sleeve supporter shirts either, nice find!

Monster find Matt!! Definitely not available at retail, this would be at absolute worst game issued but more than likely game worn, without a name on the back it is tough to say if it is actually Slater's shirt - but what a beauty!! Great find and a super item mate, I love it!!

And great card you found too, shame they didn't have the names on the back of the shirts in 1993.

I see Steve Waugh on the far right of that card - I obtained the item below from a family friend of Steve's mother who gave it to her - wonder if it is the same hat? Between us we might have 2 match worn items from the same card!!

Thanks for the feedback.....it would be funny if they were both from the same match! LOL...nice piece by the way!

I think you should take it to the SCG, they would have memorabilia there on display and someone there could easily authenticate this by way of the fabric quality and the tag on the collar (I authenticated a Hawthorn VFL jumper by liaising with the curator of the Hawthorn Museum....that guy was a wealth of knowledge on match worn items and someone at the SCG would be able to do the same). I am almost 100% sure in 1993 these were never released at retail, and if they were they definitely would not have been long sleeve now have had the Mercantile Mutual sponsor's logo - so this all helps it's case for a match worn item. What size is it? If it is an M then could well be Slater's size...

Not a bad idea.....might check it out. Its a small size however having had a photo with slats when I was about 13 i was almost bigger than him then! LOL

Cheers

It's hard to get long sleeved supporter shirts these days, but back in '93 I would say damn near impossible! Though I was only 12 back then, and I had a maroon shirt anyways :p

And this is why so many of us just loooove this site!

great story Matt, id be following this up like Brad said. surely someone would be able to help you oput, maybe even write to Slats and ask him the question, if you show him pictures he might even be able to help with some answers.
finding this would have been like an early xmas lol

Daz is right Matt, Slater would be the ideal person to ask. He hosts the lunchtime cricket show during the Test from down on the ground, you might get a chance to ask him at the Sydney Test? He is a good bloke, I'm sure he would help if asked.

Given the way you obtained it I'd be pretty confident it was match worn by Slater. They would have been unlikely to get Greg Matthews' shirt but ask Slater to sign it for example.

Any idea what your mum paid for it back then?

Asked mum and she said she paid $125 for it. Not a bad price if you ask me!

Great price! What a super mum!!

"What did you get for Xmas Johnny?"

"Oh the usual...socks, jocks, handkerchiefs. What did you get Matthew?"

"Oh the usual...match worn NSW ODI shirt. Michael Slater signed this year's one."
