Expansion

At this point I don't think the commission has really done anything that could be seen as incompetent. I didn't agree with the removal of Gallop originally or they way it happenned however, now I think what they did was reasonable he had such a high profile and now I reckon most people couldn't tell you who the acting CEO is. I don't think there is any reason to rush to appoint one, let the heat go out of it and then pick the right person for the job without all the emotion.

The release of the much awaited "strategic plan" will give us greater insight into the guys running the game.

Kyle, really? Melbourne as much as you hate them belong in the NRL they have been steadily growing. The NRL wouldn't be able to attract the big TV and sponsorship $$'s by only being relevant in 2 states, the competition needs to be national...Crawl, Walk, Run.

Like Brendan I could imagine a time where the league has expanded to 22 teams and is split into conferences or 2 divisions, with teams potentially playing for promotion or playing against demotion. Two conferences with 11 in each means 20 games a year, leaving free weekends for SOO / Internationals a inter conference All Stars game. I don't know I'm dribbling again but that's the point there is so much potential and so many options available.

Get another team from the Central Coast or QLD where there are already solid development programs and players coming up through clubs from junior to senior level. Otherwise what you get is a team like Melbourne who in addition to abhorrent cheating also have all their feeder clubs in QLD and breed no local talent because frankly people in Melbourne don't give a s*** about league.

Didn't Widdop come up through Victorian Rugby League, and then the Storm Academy?

Melbourne was about TV, specifically pay TV.

For a team that has been manufactured, around since 1998, they won 4 comps and played 6 Grand Finals. They're fanbase is actually growing AND the Melbourne TV numbers were huge for 2012 GF. It's been a slow graft but they're coming along. They also have a beautiful stadium down there now.

I don't condone the cheating though. My point on that is, if it cost $X to have a team like that, the NRL should have realised that ALL clubs needed to have higher caps to encourage the talent. I'm not trying to be facile and sure people will say no matter how high the cap, people will cheat. Fair enough.

However, would rather watch a Storm team circa 2006-2010 than a Souths team circa 2002-2006, which appears to be Paramatta now.

I also feel for a team like Canberra and to a lesser extent Illawarra-St George, who grow a lot of talent and see it lost to Sydney teams.

OFF TOPIC : Why is that no name forwards can go to Storm, play amazing and if they move on to other clubs, do SFA?
Examples : Antonio Kaufusi, Ben Cross, Brett White, Adam Blair... Jaiman Lowe was never a world beater, now retires as a GF winning Prop. LOL!
Because the coach is more superior than the players!

Does anyone get that!

Didn't Widdop come up through Victorian Rugby League, and then the Storm Academy?
He only moved to Australia when he was 16 didn't he?

That winger that debuted mid season was the first Victorian player to ever come through the Melbourne system into first grade.

Dont totally agree the Afl is a joke, its the Strongest national league by a mile and are very smart at on there outlook.
Im from melbourne and dont really follow afl that much but you do realize down here how good they are at marketing.
I Agree with you that the nrl need to put more money in there current clubs before they expand.
