Ok, so I bought a tinnie on e-bay which I won on Monday morning for what I thought was a steal of $630AU, no motor or anything, but it looks like a solid boat... Anyway, before the auction ended, I called the seller and asked him if there was any rust, structural damage, or anything else of concern to a potential buyer. He says "no, it's all sweet..." So I arrange to pick it up on Wednesday at Burpengary, almost an hour drive each way, and again he says: "no worries, come up and we'll sort it all out." I'm wondering what is there to sort out, I give you the cash, you give me the boat... Then when I go there and we're face-to-face, he tells me all I have to do is transfer the rego to my name, simple enough. So when I ask him why he hasn't de-registered it already, he says he hasn't because the boat's not in his name! Apparently, he's bought it off someone else (I'm led to believe...), who in turn supposedly bought it off the guy who's name it's still registered in. So I ask where the guy who it's registered to lives so I can verify it, and he says he's got no idea. I mean, for all I know it COULD be completely legit, but how can you sell a vehicle that's registered to someone you've never even MET, is my concern... So I told the guy once he's de-registered it, I'll take ownership of it, and for him to give me a call when that's done. So now I just gotta wait, basicly. As far as I'm concerned, I'm happy to keep my money and him keep his boat, but I'm worried if he kicks up a stink and negs me, e-bay might support him... Any thoughts or suggestions?

I am sure ebay would not support him as he is selling something he does not own. I would just keep friendly relations until the whole matter is sorted.
There are so many dodgy ebayers, i bought cards off a guy who child-like refused to deliver because i bought them too cheap. Still dont have the cards and ebay cant help (but support me).

hi axeman
i think you done the right thing.i don't see how e-bay can support him unless he can prove he owns the boat.after all how do they know it is not stolen.but we are talking about e-bay here so who knows what they will do

Yeah, haven't copped a neg yet, and haven't got on bad terms with the guy either. I'd prefer to just have both sides forget the whole thing. Just have to hope he's not an a-hole seller who pushes things... Also I was worried moreso because from some of the bad stories I've heard with transactions going wrong seem to point to e-bay possibly being more seller-oriented, as this is where e-bay gets its money from. Hope that proves unfounded, though...

I'd rather cop a neg than a knock on the door from the cops taking your boat and blowing your cash Axe ;-)

You did the right thing and I'm guessing you don't get the boat from this boat thief?

Axemeister leave that one alone mate.
As Mr Vintage said, in a worse case scenario, if the real owner of the boat tracks you down, not only do you lose the Boat, but you may be charged with a criminal offence.
So chalk that one down to your gut telling you the right thing, and stay away.

Just opened my e-mail, and Ebay have sent me a "dispute resolution" e-mail. It says something about a mutual agreement, and one of the options says: I agree not to complete this transaction/return this item. This is fine with me, but under that it says: The seller will be eligable for a refund on their e-bay fees. Would this refund come from me or e-bay? Coz as far as I'm concerned, I'm not giving him a red cent, especially since he re-listed and sold the boat without contacting me again. I mean, good luck with his sale, but why should I pay anything, even his listing fee??? I'm not too tight to not afford a few dollars, but as far as I'm concerned, he screwed me around, not the other way around. If he gets his refund from ebay, fine... I just don't think I should be out of pocket for it... Any thoughts?
