Ive been on the outer for a while but from past experience our league is a joke. Do we have any decent players?. Even if we do , they seemed to be drilled so hard it made it boring, stiffy from tassie is a classic example he was wild a kemp like in a white boy way but he was drilled and drilled to do everything the 'correct' way now we have a league full of stocktons and its just boring as . PLEASE tell me im wrong.

Your very wrong. There are many exciting young and athletic players in the league and it definately doesn't suck. It's one of the top league's in the world after the NBA. I'll admit it can be boring at time and there aren't as many huge rejections and jams as in the NBA, but that's expected as we don't have as many individual phenomenoms in Australia as a pose to the Wade's, Lebron's, T-Mac's, Iverson's and Kobe's that the US has.

it all comes down to different styles of play.........if you watch the NBL...allllllllottttt of shots are 3pters.....i mean allllootttt.......so it can be boring watching long range shots after shots after shots...so really depends on your taste really...every league is different, which is nice....and you say does anyone take the NBL seriously?....not allot of people watch it because its on Fox Sports....so not everyone has access to it, so people might think the NBL sucks without even watching the league cause its not as popular..(as for Stiff....he still a very good player and great to see him win an NBL title with the Tigers last season)
It would though be interesting to see an ex NBA coach in the NBL and see how he plays his team (might not see allot of 3pters?)

i think the NBL is more like NCAA or Euro basketball, less like the NBA which is why a lot of people dont like it...personally i love the NBL, cept last season when those bastard tigers beat my kings, but apart from that its good

ar well....you can say Roberts injured himself in the dunk contest that will be talked about for a long time, that may of cost them the title and go to 4 straight, but no excuses right? haha

NBL is like the NCAA, that's a great comparison there, but there still are a few differences. The NCAA i think sets up more at the top with the point guard waiting.

Kings? Tigers??!! Blah!! GO THE CROCS! LARRY ABNEY!

Do the math. The NBA play 82 games a year. Stacks more teams and more playoff games. = more highlights ;-)

If you want cheap thrills watch the highlight tapes. If you want to watch basketball played well watch full game and that includes the NBL.

Nothing wrong with fundamentals. Just ask Argentina and a host of others that use them to beat the US at the sport they invented.

The NBL suffers from bad marketing not lack of highlights or exciting players.

What is needed to make the NBL go through the roof in Australia? Sorry to hijack the thread Cruiser, but maybe you could answer too with your view on the NBL. I've thought about it a bit. For one, Free-to-air TV coverage wouldn't hurt.Basketball is flourishing at the moment, but we need to push it further, lol.

now is the best time possible for them to make a push for a bigger audience...With Bogut going #1 last year, Newley and Bruce probably going to be drafted next year, and the possibility of David Andersen playing some time soon aswell, Basketball Australia needs to do something to kick start it again

This Upcoming NBL season will be the best and most exciting new season of the new millenium. Two new teams, 1 is a very professinal outfit with Mark Price at the helm and the first Asian expansion team in an australian leauge or something. Alot to look foward to, and their are heaps of quality imports in our leauge, Abney, Groves (reminds me of tmac :) ) and their are players from the NBDL.

cant wait =D>

Seriously i agree with you guys with this is the time to push basketball in Australia, cause right now its all about soccer, nothing against soccer its fantastic, but basketball is going to be even more pushed aside in this country if nothing is done about it asap....soccer is HUGEEEEEE now after the world cup here with the socceroos...

Id love to sit and watch the NBl if it wasnt on fox sports....the league needs to get on free to air, at a decent time slot...actually make that "it needs to end up on 7, 9 or 10 - and not when AFL, rugby or league and cricket is on"

foxsports with carfino and that other spud ruins it.. carfino talks about the game like he was some allstar ...and that other guy (casey??) with his "does a lap of honor around the iron" really dulls the game... gaze isnt too bad.. but you should have some freashly out of the game players commentating.. so in saying that the commentating really really makes the game pretty bad..

other than that the nbl is good.. except when you watch dull teams play each other.. kings/tigers are prob the only teams worth really watching.. the bullets/dragons should now be good to watch, plus the outsiders of perhaps the crocs/breakers are an outside shot to entertain.. cant wait for the new season...

Yeah I still enjoy the NBL, and my Wildcats! Don't get a chance to watch it much because of the strange times its on now. On a side note when the season starts I will be starting up the NBL fantasy league which is similar to the AFL one but not as fun. It's still good though!

Well nbl hit its peak in the 1980s- early 1990's since then it hasnt been publicised enougth to grab a lot of peoples attention, the drafting of no.1 Bogut should help the popularity of the sport here, i think the nbl is starting to come back with more attendance and more interest, specially with the new melbourne team. Better Imports are starting to come over, you can only get what you pay for since our salary cap wouldn't even be enougth for one average nba player!

Go the Bullets!! Cj to bring championship! i hope, been waiting to long.

i have to agree with Chad on this one, the league doesn't suck - it is just the way it is marketed, when it was strong we had free to air games, highlights, merchandise and more but now it is either goto a game (1 hour and a bit drive for me either way) or watch on paytv (don't have), secondly there is nothing for collectors other than the occasional team set, if the nbl got out there and marketed it a bit more, put some games on free to air and properly merchandised the game then i think it could get back to the glory days.
but until then i don't even bother with it.
well thats my whinge for the day so am i right or wrong

Getting the kids hooked is the way to go too. I used to do a stack of school clinics and give each school free tickets to games. My mum used to run the Giants promo side of things during their title years and each week players went out to schools for clinics and comps etc. More needs to be done on a local basis. Kids have tickets, parents go, they get hooked, take friends..........

Free to air TV is the biggest issue. AFL and NRL saturation is more than it was in the 90's. Networks wont give it the timeslots the NBL wants. ABC and SBS aren't really options but its still better than nothing. The WNBL basically gives away the rights to show games.

i think the NBL will be the best this season with the addition of two new teams! Heal is back also!!

Some of the past players were awesome, despite many of them being imports! Ricky Grace, Rob Rose, Melvin Thomas, Bruce Bolden, just a few of the legends of the NBL.
