Dodgy boxes?

I normally buy cards as a complete base set or set of inserts etc. Occasionally I'll buy a pack with my paper from a box off the counter at the local newsagent or servo, with the hope of jagging a decent insert or signature or redemption card etc. Which got me wondering...

How easy would it be for a shop to bust up a case or a few boxes, find a few 1 in 100 pack type cards, then leave the rest of the packs unopened or marry them up with packs from another box where a decent card has been pulled, then put them in a box on the counter for unassuming people to buy as single packs.

It'd be massively poor form IMO but just curious if anyone's heard of it happening or if it's been discussed on these forums previously.

I'm pretty confident i know a local newsagent that does that for NRL cards. Genuinely shocked when I pulled a B Morris auto last year he was.

I have spoken to my local newsagents about it, they actually don't get sealed boxes (NBA cards) instead they get basically a whole heap of sealed packs loose from a variety of boxes.

Unfortunately I'm tending to agree with this conspiracy theory for certain retailers of NRL cards. Most just put out the boxes and sell the packs. Where I buy, most proprietors are of Asian descent and don't seem to know much about footy cards or any of the other cards they stock, just another item for sale.
But others are quite savvy and have them out of the boxes and in those display cases with AFL and WOW and YuGiOh etc.
Come to think of it, one certain N/A has a cabinet with some pretty high-end cards on display (not for sale), so they definitely know what's what.

Well said mate. I love buying a pack with my paper or petrol hoping to jag an elusive signature or redemption card. But I'd hate to think I'm doing it from a box full of dregs.

the problem is some companies pack their products in such a way that if you watch enough breaks you know were the hits are. I wouldn't even call it searching as you know you got an 80% chance of getting the hit from a certain pack.

If autos for example were 1 in every 5 boxes and randomly inserted. These guys be less likely to search their own product.

The way I look at news agency and servo packs is they are great for a bit of fun when you bored on a break. Don't expect to hit anything big unless its fro a freshly opened box in front of your eyes lol.
