What would you do??

  • Keep the R&S Patches in the PC

yeah if i were you i would not even send it for grading..... I dont think anyone bothered to grade the d rob rookie because there is no value in it.

I have found a guy in the US who is an absolute champ and will bust the case/boxes for me live, and send in the 'best looking' ones to BGS for me! So I will have little costs over and above the box/case price.

If I really wanted to, I could probably find a way to keep the set and buy the case, but I don't have my heart set on keeping a manufactured patch set anyway, so it is an easy option for me!

Does anyone want to speculate on a price for the set?

GL with it, shouldnt set you back TOO much then, depending on how many you send in for grading....
 
Before you buy the case, have you busted a box of it before?

Reason I am saying that is that you in some cases, there are not as common as you think. You will be lucky to get 1 in a box!!! Based on past experience, it was like only 1 in 4 to 6 boxes so you might only get a couple each case. Heard of stories where there is 1 or none in the entire case. Just letting you know. I'm sure you've checked the population report...but if not....that is the ONLY BGS10.....of 1366 graded.....so even if you bust a case, chances of getting a 10 seem remote, at best! Most common is 8.5...big risk getting a case, considering theres not much else in the set either.
 
That is a good idea, but you gotta wonder why these people have so many, we're they on the same mission as you? Did they already pick out the best centered card yet only scored at most a 9.5? I guess there's no harm in asking them how and why they got all these cards. And if your happy withthe answer, then go for it.

In all likelyhood that they did pick thru the lot for the best centered one,
its reasonable to say youd find atleast a couple that would qualify for a 9 centering
still giving u a shot at a 9.5 (hence why i asked if hed be happy with that grade)

I did this a while back when i was trying to get a gem mint tim hardaway rookie sensation
(also hard to find with good centering)
I found a guy selling a lot of 20. When i got them i picked out the best ones (5x) and sent them to beckett.
When i got them back, i got 2 with 3x 9.5 sub grades with 7.5 edges ('magically' damaged)
1x Mint 9. And the remaining 2 were both .5 away from a 9.5 (2x 9.5 and 2x 9 subs)

I guess my point was theres probably a greater chance of hitting a 9.5 in amognst those lots,
than having to outlay the cost for a case + postage with an unknown amount of rcs in that case,
and getting a pack fresh pristine 10.
 
Back in the day, I bought some of the vendor boxes, the ones not in packs but made for a vending machine to get a Barry Bonds Rookie. I bought 5 boxes and got 12 rookies out of it. Now, at the time, it was said this was the best way to get gradable cards, which to me sounded like a great way to get something very nice. Sent in my cards, which we looked over with a fine toothed comb and even the best one only received a PSA 8.5. I could not begin to tell you what I thought of that grading as I could not find much wrong with it. I do not think a case would help you in your quest to be honest.

You would better off buying a 9.5 and re-submitting it and trying to get a better grade. This is how a lot of 10's come about, you buy it. Do it enough times and they at some point will grade it higher for you.

Its your money, and I have no issues with how you want to spend it, however, complete sets are complete sets, and I really would not sell it if its something you worked that hard at making.

I did see some of these and consider it as the 'most practical' option (if there is one??), but I can't help but think that they are the leftovers from someone else searching!

If I was willing to settle for a 9.5, then I would probably just buy one already graded, but the whole idea is to get that 10!

I have been told that they can fall 3-4 per box??? Is that wrong?

At the odds you mentioned, then I probably wouldn't do it, but at 3-4 per box I will

I know it is cheating and relying on a grader to have a good day, but I don't mind the 'regrade the 9.5's' option??

Have you shot him an offer for it?
I cant help but think that he'll keep dropping that price down til it sells.
(like u said it, he had 2500 on it a couple of weeks ago)
You could just wait til he drops it to a price youre willing to pay for and pull the trigger then.
That way, there will still only be 1 pristine 10 and its yours.

Yeah, that is probably the best idea of them all! The 'value' of the BGS 10 will go down if there are more of them, surely!

I haven't contacted him because I wanted to let it keep dropping. If he knew I was interested, he would probably leave it high to woo me lol

I might leave it a couple weeks and see if it keeps going down??
 
So I have decided

I am going to sell off the Set - I wasn't set on keeping it anyway, so I will use it to help fund the D Rob goose chase

I am going to try and contact the owner of the only BGS 10 and see if I can work something out, if not...
I will buy 2-3 boxes of 89/90 hoops and see how often the RC's appear and what sort of condition they come in.
If ok, I will buy the case, have it busted in the States and start submitting!!!

Keep an eye out for plenty of 8.5, 9 & 9.5 D Rob rookies for sale ;)
