So I have recently picked up the last card I needed for one of my set chases - 09/10 Rookies & Stars Team Patch Autos. As you would know, the set includes the likes of Griffin, Tyreke, Curry, Jennings, Harden etc etc.
I love the 09/10 Draft Class and I want to collect all of the RC Auto sets from that year, however I am not that big of a fan of manufactured patches. Some are cool, but typically, not a fan.
I will be collecting and keeping the Classics, Contenders and Crown Royal RC Autos (All on Card, but am contemplating moving on this set.
Now, just recently, I have decided 100% on what my Ultimate PC card would be. I know for a lot of people it is a Jordan RC, but for me, I REALLY BADLY want to get a David Robinson RC with a BGS 10 grade!
I already have one that is an 8.5 but it doesn't cut it!
I have seen one on eBay for $1500, but am not really keen on anywhere near that sort of $$ for a common RC. Also, I love a good chase, so I have come up with an idea.
Thanks to Graham and others, I found that I can buy a case of 89/90 Hoops Wax from Baseball Card Exchange, pretty cheap. So I am considering buying one, getting all of the D Rob RC's from it, and send the best of them in for grading, in the hope of getting one with a BGS 10!
So, my questions are:
1 - What sort of value do you think the 09/10 R&S Team Patch Autos for fetch?
2 - Does anyone know how often the D Rob RC's fall in a box/case of Hoops?
3 - What would the chances be of getting one with good enough centering for a 10?
Have you checked the amount of RCs that have been graded?
I'd investigate either the postage on the whole case, so you know your outlay just for the cards, or just grab a couple of boxes, and try those first.
Busting a whole case just for the 1 card (multiples) does sound a LITTLE over-kill, but as you say, it's your ultimate dream card!!!
EDIT:
That listing says there's only 1 Pristine 10, hence the price tag I'm guessing. I'd go for one yourself! Just gotta work out which is best option. Perhaps you can keep both?
I have found a guy in the US who is an absolute champ and will bust the case/boxes for me live, and send in the 'best looking' ones to BGS for me! So I will have little costs over and above the box/case price.
If I really wanted to, I could probably find a way to keep the set and buy the case, but I don't have my heart set on keeping a manufactured patch set anyway, so it is an easy option for me!
Does anyone want to speculate on a price for the set?
The problem isn't with the cards being 'pack fresh'. In most cases, it is the centering! Most of them have the printing on the card offset from the middle by mm's. And that reduces the grades!
id say keep your money and wait for one on ebay to come up, by the time you buy a case, have the cards shipped, then send them for grading which porb cost another $60 depends who you go with, youve pissed away a lot of money for a $40 card.

No way in hell is a BGS10 DRob worth 1500! Seller is off their rocker!!!! Case bust and send in sounds like fun but again, beckett grading copping a beating in another thread
