Cricket umpiring

Has anyone on here ever done any cricket umpiring?

Last season I over the holiday break I did the Level 1 training course, enabling me to umpire junior (Under 13) games for the second half of the season, which was quite enjoyable. This season I am starting umpiring senior matches, which will be more challenging, but also fun. I have to start in the lower grades (obviously), but depending on how the captains rate my umpiring, I can try to move up the grades. Next year I intend on taking the Level 2 training course so hopefully I can start umpiring 1st Grade games. The end goal is umpiring international matches, hopefully within 6 or so years, which I believe if I give it my best shot, I can achieve.

So anyway, have you umpired? Got any advice, tips, experiences or stories? I'd love to hear them!

Dad used to play and umpire in the 1980's in the local competition and I'm told that he didn't stand for any nonsense. A TRUE story involves one bowler who had a habit of snatching his cap from Dad at the end of the over and it eventually got the better of Dad....who instead of handing the bowler his cap, simply dropped it on the ground and stood on it

Haha well played by your Dad! Nothing worse than an arrogant bowler with no respect for the umpires. Luckily I haven't encountered too many of those yet...

David Rodgers also looks like a no-nonsense type of umpire. In fact, he has a similar role to my Dad, who is the junior umpire coordinator for the Northern suburbs of Perth. It's a great job actually!

Back in those days of course you could be a little more liberal and care-free with your words and actions on the field. Dad described himself as a determined rather than free-flowing lower-order batsman and on one occasion an opposition bowler said "Jesus Graeme, I can't get you out"...to which Dad replied "Yeah, you're the only **** that can't this season!!"

I play 6th grade. Last week, in the opposition side, the dad was batting, trying to stave off an outright innings and 250 run defeat. The son (who had played U16s in the morning) was standing in as umpire. We put a lollipopper on to bowl and second ball, the batsman half drives, half blocks but the ball lobs up for a caught and bowled. He had been so determined to play it out and lost his wicket. In frustration and for laughs (the blokes in my team knew him well) he throws the bat in the air, cursing, swearing, putting on a little show. The son stands there sheepishly and the dad picks up his bat and says "and don't f***ing tell your mother!". Geez we cracked up and as he walked back to the pavilion the son/ump shrugs and says "if dad could bat as well as he carries on, we'd never lose!". More laughs.

My brother in law played grade and once had nine wickets in an innings. His bowling partner kept appealing for LBWs and they weren't given. My brother in law told the ump in no uncertain terms he was not to let the other bloke get the 10th wicket he was striving for. The umpire said to him: "if you bowled half as well as your mate at the other end, we'd have been home an hour ago." My brother in law replies "is that right?". Steams in, skittles the stumps. 10 fer.

Have my first solo seniors match tomorrow. A little nervous, but looking forward to it!

To make it a bit trickier there is going to be some rain around tomorrow, so may have to make some tough decisions there.

Thanks Jesse, I believe you can start at the age of 14 doing junior matches, then if think you can handle seniors you can do that the season after.

Well, it turned out to be quite eventful...

It was a one-dayer, 40 overs each side. Starting at 12:30, the first innings went smoothly. At 3:30 the second innings started, it was pretty dark. At the start of the second over there was some thunder. The last ball of the second over resulted in a wicket. As the batsman walked off it started drizzling, but we thought it would be ok to keep playing. As the new batsman walked in, all of a sudden it is bucketing down. Everyone sprints for the cover of the trees (no clubrooms). 5 minutes later the pitch is submerged in an inch of water and at deep midwicket, a drain has flooded. We had to call it off due to unsafe (and unplayable) conditions. Due to the second innings only lasting 2 overs we had to call it a draw!

And to top it off when I get home there's water leaking through the roof of my bedroom . But my footy cards are ok thankfully!

Umpiring the big games will come natural to you I reckon mate.
Will you have hot spot and all the fancy jazz at your disposal?

Yeah that experience does help, mainly with things like nicks behind I can adjudicate fairly accurately! Playing for 10 years has also helped with that I guess.

I don't have any of that fancy technology to help me yet unfortunately! As I hopefully move up through the ranks more and more resources will be available I suppose.

Thanks mate Yeah cricket is actually my favourite sport (just ahead of Aussie Rules) and there's nothing better than going to the WACA on a beautiful summers day, watching a day of Test cricket (except there's no Test at the WACA this season )

Yeah it's a great game, full of ebbs and flows. Can't wait for the next Ashes series , not to mention the World Cup. Australia will win it I reckon.
