Years before UD ever existed, Topps were the sole producers...and did a great job. In the mid 80's, we didn't even have a standard producer (Star were really just arena sales). The hobby has survived for this long, but if people want to over sell the companies involvement in the hobby (their over production of GU and auto, chipping on high end products such as UD Black, using retired stars to drive sales rather than the new generation, etc, etc) and form an opinion on a product that doesn't yet exist, then that will be great for those of us that stay - hopefully a few gems in PCs are liquidated following this announcement (JP - if you are one of those, I'll take your 1/1 Worthys!! )
Make up a bonox, lie down with a cool facewasher and take a deep breath...the sun will come up tomorrow.
To get this license from the NBA, and literally take it from under the noses of UD and Topps (which may take it for granted that it has an NBA License after all these years), Panini would have had to make a presentation to the NBA along with showing them their distribution plans, along how much coin the NBA can gain working with Panini exclusively. In saying that, they would have had to make some amazing sample cards too show the NBA that they are for real, considering they have an official 'cards/collectables' department at the NBA, whose personnel would have seen all the previous UD and Topps releases.
Perhaps NBA cards will get back to being freely available in all stores in australia and globally, which if successful means greater resources and further R & D (research & dev) and new products for collectors.
I personally think this is a fantastic opportunity for collectors who have lost faith in the hobby.. I only started collecting again about a month ago after nearly 20 years, and going through my old cards I realized just how much fun it used to be.. Waiting for the old man to finish work on the weekend so we could go down and get a few packs, not just to finish a set but for the love of collecting.
Coming back to it and seeing $500 dollar packs of cards is honestly a f**king joke.. I mean really, I might sound like a nostalgic old ***** but i used to look forward to getting a couple of packs of cards in hope of finishing a set, just for the fun of collecting. I would have lost my mind if I had a players REAL signature on a card (i used to collect old Upper deck 94-95's with the gold and silver signatures ) and now its like they are everywhere!!
What sort of kid has $500 bucks to drop on 5 basketball cards?? REALLY??! I understand that there needs to be some sort of high end product for hardcore collectors but comeon!!!
I'm very interested in seeing what Panini do with this, honestly it could hopefully revive a hobby that is being saturated with so called "limited edition" cards that are almost pedestrian..

Have no fear mate, there is still plenty of cheap boxes you can bust if you are on a limited budget... The positive of super high end boxes/cards is that even if you don't have the money to bust a box or pack of them when you are young, most collectors would still love to own them or at least 1 at some point
I personally never considered busting a box of "93/94 finest" at $10/pk but with the addition of plenty of Autographs it is far more tempting
Believe me limited budget isn't an issue.
I just think it was more fun to be able to collect a whole set
of cards. I honestly can't imagine doing that with a 500 dollar pack haha
this is BS. my main goal is collecting atleast 1 upper deck set from every year. i dont touch other cards except for a few odd cards for my pc. i thought this would be a never ending goal but now there is an end in sight. so im kinda pissed.

Cheer up shaun, UD still have got releases, it's just that they can't use NBA logos or likeness hence the Greats of the Game release so your ongoing quest can continue!
