Australian cricket team - where to from here?

great comments.
that article has some great points.
still think clarke is overrated, and shouldn't be captain.
he hasen't done a good job when captaining one-dayers, so what's to say he would be good at test level.
also, has he even captained nsw?
ponting will captain the ashes, but how long after?

So the selectors have made 30 changes during Ponting's captaincy. Sniffs of panic. They haven't given some the opportunity they deserved (e.g. Hughes, Krejza, Hodge), others they kept that deserved to go (eg Hussey, North) they kept Johnson for too long, even Clarke who probably isn't fit, would benefit from a rest. Too many changes can be as bad as too few. The trick is to get the balance right. I don't think the current selectors have got the nous or the knack to get it right.

Yes I too thought Krejza was the bes to option we had. But since he has been dropped he lost mojo and sucked.

I don't understand why they dropped him considering he got so many wicket sin South Africa and then he was gone lol. That kind of drop for so player can be career ending mentally considering they were going so well.

Great read brad! Get the feeling from this thread that the general undertone is that the ashes are already lost! We could be going to Perth 0-0 still if the weather is favourable for us tomorrow... There is still fight left in us yet....

The main problem Liam is that a tied series still keeps the Ashes with England, and we must face facts - in all honesty the Poms have a better fast bowling attack, the best spinner in world and their top 4 batsmen have all made hundreds - and we are still only 2nd Test into the series!!

I am still hopeful that a draw here can see us pull something out of the bag in Perth, but i think it is fair to say that for Australia to win this series would be regarded as right up there with our greatest wins in Ashes history. No small task.

I wonder how Marcus North will sleep tonight - his test career is totally riding on tomorrow's innings. Massive pressure!! What if he makes say 44 -do the selectors retain him for his home Test? I doubt it.

Andrew Symonds should still be in this side... Other than that young guys not getting a go. old guys dont need to perform as there spots are always safe.

we have no x factor. And the bowling attack just seems to go through the motions

I think that if we have no possible way of winning the series in Sydney then it would be a great time to bring in a couple of young blokes. Especially Smith on his home ground, know for spin.

Katich is most probably out for at least Perth, so Hughes or Khwarja could get a start. I would think Hughes but you never know.
Watson is solid, leave him there, it works.
Ponting needs some runs, but we all know he's safe for now.
Clarke looked solid today, back seemed a lot more free, would love to see him bowl a few overs.
Hussey 3 weeks ago was gone, my favourite player and in great touch at the moment.
North don't know why he's still there, anything less than triple figures tomorrow and it's time to bring in youth (Smith, Khawarja, Ferguson)
Haddin good form with the bat, loses his head sometimes, gets out to rash shots. I think Tim Paine is a better gloveman.
Doherty not much to say, the cupboards pretty bare. If they stick with North he and Clarke could bowl in Perth and we could use 4 quicks.
Harris best bowler so far this test, keep him if his knees hold up
Siddle great in first innings in Gabba, not much after that. Would be in my 4 quicks for Wacca
Bollinger not had the impact i would of expected, rhythm seems off.

Extras. Would highly consider Johnson for Wacca, has had a rest and strenghtens the tail.
Smith- I think we should add some legspin to the attack for Sydney if not Melbourne.

my final thought is that maybe we should put 4 stumps at each end when england bats and we'll have 2 when we bat, might even things up a little. :)

Yeah Brad and might I painfully add all BIG hundreds by the pommy top 4! I just still hold hope that if we are lucky enough to get away with a draw tomorrow then that is the spark that is needed, Johnson has to be back in Perth, remember what he did to the Saffas there not so long ago (And as I have been continually pointing out to pommie, his side are half saffa anyways;)) plus he adds valuable batting, sure his form has been off of late, but we have to stick with people, maybe his droping will be a wake up call!

Clarke was impressive today, very unlucky to get out on the last ball. He looked determined and gritty and withstood some fierce spells, like that ball that ripped from the rough past leg and beat keeper and all and went for four byes! Very next ball he danced down the track and tried to smash him out of the park, didn't quite come off but his intent was there. Same with the dodgy "nick" to slip that was overturned on appeal, next ball he smashed a pull shot into alistair cook fielding at short leg and he didn't even check he was ok, cook jumped straight up and clarke walked down to talk with hussey... Tough cricket by both of them!

And well Hussey has definitely won back my respect, there are probably old old threads on here calling for his head LOL

And North..... I sort of hope there is enough cricket 2moro for him to fail again and then the heavens open for the day :D

I think Ponting could do with being down the order a little bit, although it will never happen, I think he could be more useful in the twilight of his career at #5 or #6, I mean Steve Waugh hid his whole career down there (hey mambo ) even when they were in desperate need of a first drop!

Oh crg a little article from today's couriermail, eludes to the "x factor" like you said - Titled Fancy a comeback, Warnie?

well Tendulkar has gone down to 5th i think and it sure hasn't hurt his chances of getting runs. He has like 6 hundreds this year.

Mind you England have balled very well to Ponting. Since Australia are so far down on runs and he is the captain the pressure is so high on him. I think if he dropped captaincy and batted lower it would help him.

(And as I have been continually pointing out to pommie, his side are half saffa anyways;))
lol I thought KP had a great London accent when interviewed yesterday, don't know what you mean!

with regards the test team for perth. this is what i would not like to see to face our boys:
Watson
Katich
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Cameron White (showed against our boys when playing for aussie a that he is a high class player and what is happening to his bowling, it seems to have disappeared)
Haddin
Smith (adds to the fielding, batting and a decent young bowler by the looks of it)
Johnson (class player, just needs something to spark and he is away, look at how kp and hussey have suddenly come into form)
Harris (looked your most consistent bowler)
Bollinger

so i don't think you need any major changes, just replace your number 6 and find a spinner, or at least someone or a few guys who can bowl a few overs of spin and in white, clarke, katich and smith there are enough overs there with some good variety.
