hey all

My pc player is Derrick rose and was wondering what you other collectors collecting expensive to buy/trade or hard to find cards do? I don't buy boxes so hard for trade bait also
Do I bite the bullet and pay big to get d rose?
Do I collect whatever I can afford of his? (prob never achieving my goals)

What did u decide to do as I know as time goes by he only going to get more expensive. I think that some help from u more experienced collectors could really help me out here

I thought about this when i first started collecting too, and that is exactly why I ended up collecting DeJuan Blair. He was the first pick by my Spurs in the year I really got back into it, but more importantly, he was a second round pick, so he is cheap!

Collecting cards is about the fun of it. Not the value of your collection! Personally, I collect sets first and foremost, then put any extra time and money into my PC player.

Rose is always going to be an expensive PC player because of the MVP and the number of collectors chasing him, so if the prices they are at now is too much for your budget, then you really need to either change player, or decide only to collect low end stuff!

It's a tough spot cause d rose is my fav player but am no chance of affording his rc au and even if I get 1 or 2 how am I ever going to complete my collection of all his cards? I totally agree about the fun part but have got nearly all rc (unsigned) and a lot of base and inserts but once I get all them I'll still never get every auto just on an affordability thing. I see a lot of collectors getting close to having one of every card of their pc player and would love that as not a set collector but can't afford $1000's on one card

My favourite player isn't DeJuan Blair!

It is David Robinson. But I know I can't afford/justify to spend big bucks on him!

The difference would be that I know Robinson won't go down in price though, whereas D Rose could if he got injured or lowered is playing standards!

Why don't you try sending some base RC's over to get IP auto's??

They are not authenticated, but you know they are real and if you aren't looking to profit, will do the job.

You have to hunt down contacts for him on the net! People like managers/agents etc and just hope and prey!

I was lucky enough recently to get Tony Parker's manager to get an authentic Jersey signed by him for me!

Hi mate,
If Rose is your fav player then you have to stick with him. But you need to accept that it will almost close to impossible to collect all his cards. Not unless you have $$$ to burn. For me, my fav player is Shaq, during the time I started collecting him, I never had the $$$ to spend to get all his cards, so I just focus on what I can buy/trade and it took me years to get some of the cards I was not able to get during the time the card was released.

Honestly, I would probably just collect all Blair's in Spurs uni then stop!

I am a Spurs fan for life and if he leaves by choice, he is dead to me... if he gets traded against his wishes, then he is just permanently disabled to me!

Pretty this is the best thing Adam has ever typed. I'm exactly the same with my Nuggets.

Back on topic, As Adam said, you don't need to collect your favorite player, I collect Bruce Bowen, not my favorite but is in my top 3 and is rather affordable.

Kenneth Faried is my favorite player, obviously there is no cards of his yet so DeMarcus Cousins was the next best thing and I used to collect him and if you ask almost any of the guys in the basketball section here they'll tell you I had a pretty decent PC but his prices went up and up and up which made him unaffordable (for me) but every now and then I'll treat myself to a nice Cousins card.

But it is hard because everyone likes good players and good players are expensive.

But it depends if you are a fan of the team or a fan of a player.

For some reasons having my side collection of Grant Hill in Pistons uniform is more appealing to me than in his Magic/Suns uni. I think it quite rare for players to stick to one team.

mate when i got back into the game i started collecting mike bibby! and still do 4 years back in the game. i beleve its about the thrill of collecting as a whole and the good and the bad people that you meet along the way. there will be good and bad deals and then the deal that makes you want to quit the hobby!

Aim high mate, I'm pretty limited in funds for my pc (spending too much atm though) but the way I see it if you see that Rose card that in your eyes is the best they've ever produced but is just out of your price range just keep it in the back of your head and it's funny as sometimes the stars align and before you know it it's in your collection!

If I could give you one tip, don't waste your time with the low end stuff. I'd select a few reasonably prices cards and save towards them. Having 100-200 $1 cards is nice of course, but think of the postage spent on all that. You could've probably saved and had an awesome $350 Exquisite auto of him (possibly an auto patch?). Or a sweet refractor maybe (not too sure how high Rose's cards go).

I always find if I buy quality cards ($30 - $50 range) they at least hold their value, sometimes go up a touch, then I sell them (even if pc unfortunately) to get something VERY nice. It's kind of another way of saving + collecting at the same time.

I had 100 Tim Duncans, but they were nowhere near as nice to look at as my Playmakers Theatre T.D.

Couldn't agree more with the above post. If I was to do it all again with my Augustin collection i'd not have worried about base cards as they cost a tonne when you factor in postage. Take it slow save some cash and splurge every once in a while on cards you really want for your collection.

Cheers and if you do miss any of those lower end cards you can always grab em back later in other deals.

not to contradict any of the above posts, but in all the time and bucket loads of money ive spend on the hobby its good to also learn the hobby. I think that to completly get the most out of what and why u love it is to get the base - then realise you shouldn't have got the base - then get the gu - then realise you souldn't have got them - then to the cheap autos - to the high end stuff ect. This then makes you a better rounded collector and will help you define your own collecting goals as everyone is different to what they expect and want from their own collections
