Greeting all... just thought some1 (ex smokers ) could lmk how they kicked the bad habit..
After 3 lung collapses and finally a lung operation ive still continued to smoke..
I suppose the big let off for me was when the doctor said likly this would have happened even if i didnt smoke.
He did say ide be better of without them..
At 43 ive SERIOUSLY been thinking about doing it..
Ive tryed before and had a fair bit of trouble with cravings, mood swings etc.
So how did you do it.... gum, patches,pills,apuncture....
Big healthbonus and more money for you know what ..:D
thanks in advance
steve

i cant help u out as im not a smoker, but im guessing a lot of willpower. makes u wonder why u started in the first place.

I'm a non-smoker and always have been, so can't really give advice... BUT....

Why smoke? Seriously.... what are the benefits? There are none! Most of the time it starts as kids through a bit of pressure from friends or just trying to fit in and be cool, but as adults??

It costs a fortune and kills you??? How can that not be good enough reason to quit???

You hear people complain about petrol prices, interest rates, the cost of cards  , yet they don't even think twice about the $10, $20, $30 a week they spend to quicken death!

Obviously this is not all aimed at hsv becuase I don't know you.... I just wanted to put my opinion forward....

steve

my boss has been on a crusade to get everyone at work to quit... haha.. so we dont take so many smoko...

he is giving out this book & it has worked with everyone so far... (ranging from socials to pack a day smokers)...

i will get the name of it for you tmr.... it has worked very well so far

good luck in advance....

marty

i dont smoke either Stevo, but i think for your own sakes you got to really get on top of ya health.

And by quitting smoking will only help.

Burn a Maggette Auto with a cigi, then you can curse those smokes forever :)

Goodluck with it mate.

How does that ad go with the cheer squad?

No! Stevo No! No! Stevo No! Nooooo Stevoooo!

I really don't think it's a matter of which method you use, but if you REALLY want to quit. It's like losing weight, being prepared to change your eating habits etc etc.

I know reformed smokers who said they made a decision to say they were a non smoker. That's the hardest part, cause then people offer you smokes all the time and you just have to refuse the temptation. Also they say they have all those extra $$$ esp if they are pack/day or more smokers.

Imagine all those maggettes you could get if you quit :D

Good luck! You'll be better off without them in the long run - just my view.

stevo, heres an opinion from a smoker (about 10yrs now) who has cut down from a pack a day almost to about 3 smokes a day...its all willpower baby. and sacrifice. and priorities.

no book, patch, or any other quick fix is going to do the trick. its like losing weight; youve got to want to lose it (ive also lost about 30kg in the last yr too). its not good enough just to know you need to cut down or quit for the sake of your health...youve got to WANT to quit. and most of the time youve got to drastically change some things in your life in order to do that, as hard as that may be. for me it was stopping going to the pub on weekends to watch the footy with my mates cos i would drink a fair bit and basically the more you drink, the more you smoke ya know? i also had to stop participating in our poker nights, as they were non stop 10 hr chain-a-thons pretty much lol. it shits me that i cant go to the pub or play poker with my mates anymore but if im choosing between dying a painful death at an early age or not watching the footy at the pub, hey, easy choice mate.

at the end of the day, its down to you and the strength of your character. if you really want to quit/cut down you will. some ppl can go cold turkey, i know i couldnt so i set limits for myself as to the maximum number of smokes i could have a day: started with 15, every week i would have one less, until now im down to 2-3 smokes a day. i dont know how im going to completely quit...maybe i never will? but every less ciggo i have is a like an extra day on my life i think of it as.

anyway, i wont say good luck, because its got nothing to do with luck, its about willpower mate. stay strong stevo.

Hey mate,I know what you are going through.I have tried many times & still trying.Non smokers have no idea of what it is like to give up.It is the hardest thing i have ever tried to do.I am convinced that only very strong will power and keeping very busy is the way to go.I gave up alcahol 9 years ago, that was easy compared to giving up smokes. It's the addictive chemicals they knowingly put in them that makes you addicted.I really would like to see them banned alltogether from sale.
I lost my dad 2 years ago & my eldest girl (both cancer) a year before that & still havenot been able to Quit. The affect's it has on your body is so bad that you cannot function or think normaly .I have been a heavy smoker since i was 17 & i know if i do not give up very soon,Than it's only a matter of time.
Maybe we could find a way to help each other, because support from friends & family are a big help. But saying that, it is mainly willpower & changing your everyday way of life.No stress & keeping very busy. I do not even enjoy it.
I am trying to prepare myself to give it a shot again.I have tried all the patch's & other stuff but i think it's all rubbish. The only people that i know who have been able to do it have gone cold turkey.
maybe we can support eachother when you decide to give it a go.

I met my wife. Basically she told me that if I wanted her to stick around I'd give up the cancer sticks. So I did. I agree with J totally, it's all about will power and sacrifices. Sure I knew that they were doing me harm but they made me look cool. I went cold turkey just by thinking about what I wanted more than smelly clothes, bad breath and yellow teeth. Oh yea, and cancer!
You'll feel better for it and your hobby will prosper ;)
Also, does your wife smoke Stevo?

Best of luck with it. Sounds like it's a hard thing to do, but for us non-smokers it's never understood how/why it's such a hard thing to do....

I always ask Danni "why do you NEED a ciggy"..... never get an answer I can understand.

Good luck with it all!!!

you have a better chance going cold turkey than rashoning down.

havent had a smoke in my life as passive smoking starts my asthma so i cant really say much. but my dad gave up cold turkey, after about 30 years smoking atleast, bout 12 years ago and never had another one because it was affecting my breathing. unforunitly it still took his life with cancer last year. i spouse all you really need is a reason that you dont want to have em and have the will power not to go back

good luck though steve.

i cant talk from personal experience as i dont smoke but my hubby gave it up cold turkey, different ways work for differnet people , i think the main thing is you have to WANT to quit and then just do it, no fussing no wondering how you should do it, just do it,...... only my 2 cents worth, good luck with it unkie steve i wish my mum would quit but she doesnt want to at all.........

Steve

The book that has done wonders for everyone at work is called

"Allen Carr - Easy Way to Stop Smoking"

Just like most has said so far, will power & motivation is needed to quit.... but human being humans are sometimes stubborn and needs someone to reinforce the major points to you...

head down to the your local dymocks and give it a try....

mate for me - I tried everything but what worked in the end was...

patches and lots of willpower.

I started on 3 patches - lol yeah I didn't just use the one!
Found that it helps with mood swings etc
Slowly moved onto two patches then one then nicotine free! ;)

But it all depends on your willpower!

just dont be a little wimp and stop smoking..
my grandmother was forced to give up smoking after a pack a day for 55 years when she was admitted to hospital, she did it completely cold turkey..

youve had lung operations, you should be kissing the ground you walk on that you've been given another chance..
raise your game fool

Easy mate....an addiction is an addiction. If it was that easy to give up people would be giving up everywhere.

No one needs to hear that sort of abuse especially not someone asking for advice....on a serious topic.

So...in response...raise your game fool...or stay out of it!!

That really pisses me off. Were is the support in that.
Your grandmother was FORCED to give up you say,Why did it take going to hospital for her to give up?You have no idea of what it's like.

my grandmother never wanted to give up in the past.. that is why..

that is not the point..

the only thing that is stopping you guys from smoking is determination and some guts.. if you want people being all cushy-cushy and supportive it aint gonna work..
ive known people with addictions in the past (of various kinds) and they only succeed when they realize its time to pull their head in and that they are only given one chance at life and they need to take advantage of it..

sure, your gonna feel like absolute shit whilst quitting, but think of life on the other side.. the sight of people with lung cancer, dying at early ages, or not being able to breathe when you walk at 70, should be enough to make you all quit..

is it worth a month of hard work and guts? damn right it is...

same thing can be related to things such as losing weight.. people just say, YOU DONT KNOW HOW HARD IT IS.. well they just dont want to do it bad enough..

if you are still smoking but 'think' you want to quit, that aint enough... youve gotta put all your determination into it, and REALLY WANT IT.. there is a reason that some people can quit, while others cant..

Steve, As you know i used to chain away with you all the time.......I decided to give up as it was costing so much and causing grief with my wife who didn't smoke. A few people have said you have to WANT to give and that is 100% the key - It WAS very hard but the eventual way it worked for me was to use patches and stay away from things that I associated with smoking.......ie going to the pub, socialising after cricket ect ect.......other thing I did was tried to keep active during the time I smoked the most. It does get easier each time you try but it is pretty hard to do !!! One other thing I did was - Each time pad day came around I would buy myself some DVD's of packs of card to reward myself.....they say rewarding yourself helps you push on. The money I would have spent on smoke went towrds something I got to keep and eventually (after 2 months) I just saved the money :)

As for Geelongfan's response - Yeah real nice mate, support is a critical element to giving up and comments like yours are pathetic - Keep them to yourself you fool !

Good luck mate
Regards

I was waiting for somebody to use the old Richard Pryor line:
"Well my mama told me "Son, don't you be a quitter" thats why I don't quit smoking".
Actually it was cocaine but ah well.

No! Stevo No! No! Stevo No! Nooooo Stevoooo!
