A few for the New Year... and more Mikan

Like most of you, I've had an epic mailday today because Australia Post decided they were ready to deliver today, after consecutive 4 day weekends.

I'll start with a few random pickups; as people should know by now I'm a fan of the retired players...

A couple of Patrick Ewing's

A Oscar Robertson from National Treasures... #ed 10/10

Micheal Ray Richardson Red Hot Prospects auto #ed 2/5

Now for the Mikans...

A PSA 10 base from the 2008-2009 Topps T-51 Murad set

2009-20100 Hall of Fame High Class Black Border version (83/199)

2010-2011 Panini Limited #ed 43/199

Now for the big hitters...

2009-2010 Hall of Fame 'Famed Fabrics' Prime #ed 1/10

This patch seems to be pure wool, unlike the other Mikan patch I've got which seems like normal basketball jersey. A few of the other Mikan patches I've seen look woolen too.

2009-2010 Panini Limited 'Limited Cuts' Cut Auto #ed 1/5

Not really sure what Mikan has signed here but the figures in the left corner look like houses.

What he said! Cardigan patch - we've got a new hobby phrase! Cut signatures normally come from things like first day envelopes (could eb a possibility given the lines above and picture to the left) or cheques. Either way - great sig and love the goggles on the avatar pic!

Yeah its a really nice card in hand because its got a rainbow-ish reflection to it. That its a cut auto /5 makes it even sweeter.

Yeah love me some old school players, especially the very early BAA/NBA days stars such as Mikan.

Yeah I thought having both the cut auto /5 and the patch /10 together would create competition between them!

The patch looks and feel like 'knitted shiz' to use your phrase.

Having seen some early pics of Mikan, his jersey looks like its more like t-shirt material than modern day basketball jersey material (although I've got a patch /10 that is clearly modern day style basketball jersey material) because you can see the sweat on it. But maybe it was actually more wool, like old school footy jumpers, than thin cotton.

Yeah Mikan was a lawyer and owned a travel agency before he became the first Commissioner of the ABA in the late 1960s, so I'm sure he signed lots of stuff for work on top of the signatures he did for fans. I'd be very interested to know what exactly it came from; some of the cut autos I've seen of his are from signed photos of him, from letters like you said and cheques.

I was very happy to get the Oscar National Treasures /10 because they are such nice cards and I love the Big O.

Yeah I've been very impressed with the Panini inserts of Mikan I've picked up; nicely designed on thick stock.

Good ideas about where the sig could have come from, thanks for the ideas.

Also the googles on the basketball was a George Mikan memorial patch worn by the LA Lakers and Minnesota on their warm-up suits and shooting shirts in 1999.
