Rio Ferdinand: Players expect red for two-footed tackle - ESPN Soccernet

looks like rio needs to re-read the rule book. doesnt state that anywhere in FA or FIFA rules. especially not 'clearly'.
whats interesting tho is that refs go around telling clubs pre-season that two footed tackles are automatic RC's, but where are they getting this from then?

I think Rio is fine with the rules. It you that needs to read the rule book. This from FIFA's rules of the game.

The 7 offenses for which a player must be shown a Red Card and sent off are:

1. serious foul play (includes any use of excessive force or brutality against an opponent when challenging for the ball. Examples include a dangerous slide tackle from behind, or an "over the top tackle" in which a player raises his foot so the cleats could hit a player, or a two footed tackle that takes down the opponent. FIFA has broadened this definition by saying that "Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force and endangering the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play. For current rules visit fifa.com, Laws of the Game. The above quote is from Questions and Answers, Additional Instructions for Referees). The rules now include "Decision 4", which says: "A tackle, which endangers the safety of an opponent, must be sanctioned as serious foul play".

/\/\ errrr, maybe you need to really read what it says. youve highlighted in bold the exact part that proves my point. 'one or both legs'. meaning the rule has nothing to do with the amount of legs you use, its all about the 'with excessive force' part.
rio says it clearly states if you use both legs, its a RC. it doesnt state that at all. it says if you use one OR both with excessive force.
thats the exact rule i posted a few days ago. i actually read it tho. did you read the rule? or once again just skim through without actually taking notice of what was written?
this is why theres still a debate, because people like you and rio dont read whats written, but just see what they want.

Just because you have such an issue admitting your wrong here is the entire passage from the FIFA rule book.

Please dont waste your time trying to tell me that im somehow wrong and you have a better interpretation of this rule than (a) a referee, (b) the disciplinary committee that refused a hearing for Kompany or (c) a professional football player.

/\/\ well, lets be honest, we could both be accused of not liking to admit when we're wrong. but this second part youve highlighted brings up an entirely different point. i would agree that it could be deemd that all 2 footed tackles endanger the safety of an opponent, but the rule doesnt say that either. no where does it say that any 2 footed tackle endangers the safety of an opponent? thats not me trying to prove you wrong. thats just the way it is. the rule is too ambiguous because people have different ideas of what constitutes 'endangering safety' and 'excessive force'.
refs make mistakes. the disciplinary committee arent always consistant. and as can be seen from the recent debates, players have different interpretations of the rule. i dont claim to understand it better than all of them. just pointing out that it has different meanings to different people.
all im saying is that there is no actual rule stating 2 footed tackles are automatic RC's. it could be interpreted that way, yes, but thats a subjective point of view.

The first sentence gives uses the example of a two footed tackle as serious foul play. Serious foul play is a red card. Either way i thought the issue with the Kompany send off was more about the way Rooney went on afterwards rather than the actual tackle.

/\/\ that sentence still leaves room for players to make two footed tackles tho, as long as the opponent isnt taken down. so a two footed tackle that doesnt bring down a player should be fine. nani wasnt taken down.
pretty sure we'll at least agree that rooney didnt get kompany sent off?
the tackle is just as much a debate tho. rodwells similar tackle earlier this season was overturned by the FA. johnson made an almost identical tackle in the cup the other day without even a free kick let alone a red. people want clarification. or consistancy.

I don't have a problem if a 2 footed tackle gets the ball clearly and if the attacker falls over, so be it, the problem is the over acting by players as soon as someone brush's past them, thay act like they have been shot, its not like you see heaps of 2 footed tackles during a game anyway, BUT if a player attempts 2 footed tackle and doesn't get the ball and hurts the attacker then have no problem with RC..

ive always thought that to. if you get the ball first, it should be allowed. unfortunately thats not the way it works.
speaking from experience, being a ref is a tough, thankless job. i dont look down on them for making mistakes. its so hard to keep an eye on everything. feet, arms, ball, off the ball. mistakes are also part of football. its why im against video refs. football isnt perfect. refs are fallable just like players and that should remain part of the game in my opinion.
foy does seem to make alot of errors tho.

havent really been updating on the championship, since im not sure anyone really cares, but if we keep playing like we have been, the hammers will be straight back up again next season.

After Liverpool's defeat to Bolton overnight,I am drawing eerie parallels with my Hawthorn supporting
days of seasons 1997-1999 - whereby each and every win came as a big, joyful bloody surprise! It will be another trophy-less season on Merseyside unless the Carling Cup run can bring some joy. Not sure where Liverpool go to from here,they seem to have lost their way recently on and off the pitch. As a supporter, their Luis Suarez defence was embarrassing.

Agree with what you say Matty!

As a Liverpool fan i'm starting to get lost at which way they are trying to head on the table. They need a Striker that can score goals and Andy Carroll has not been one of them (When he signed for Liverpool i didn't think he would do well and we overpaid for him) Luis Suarez can be good at times but he can be wasteful in front of goals and as some people say his arrogant! Craig Bellamy has had more shot on target than Suarez And to think that Dirk Kuyt hasn't scored a goal this season is worse!

As Liverpool Fan i hope they get a striker who can score, Win the Carling Cup, most importantly they can Hopefully Make their way up and Challenge for titles in the Future!

How Bale and Defoe managed to cock up that last goal attempt is beyond me....

As for Balotelli - glad he got us those 3 points cos he'll be sitting on his ass for 3 games - idiot....
