I think it's time for me to begin a set chase of something current.

I didn't think much of the 1st release of GS but the 2nd seemed very nice (other than keeping the parallel set EXACTLY the same as the base set bar the numbering).

Have Panini nailed it this time?

I'm thinking I may be buying my first boxes for over a year:)

Would love to hear some thoughts from previous collectors.

I'd also like to know if you think the $188 pre-sell price is about right that DACW has it priced at.

Opinions (positive/negative) welcome.

They nailed it if you ask me. Huge fan of their auto designs, the black gold looks awesome again and great to see bullion brand come back again. Go for it! I've picked up some from this year's release and live holds they have so many legends and current affairs. The size of the gu pieces are huge!

Sweet, I knew you'd give me a reply Norm.

I'm still a sucker for a good base/parallel set. I like the auto sets too and really rate the Black Gold + 14k/24k stuff.

Not as big a checklist by the looks of things this release, a shame they've gotten rid of 14k/24k stuff.

I'm gonna go for a couple of boxes I reckon to get me started:thumbsup:

What about a case? ;)

They have a solid gold insert. Not sure if that's the whole card.

I liked the first release better. Ir had the good old fashioned inserts in them and they were shiny as hell! I put the whole base/rc auto/insert set together (530ish cards altogether from memory, all /299) but in 11-12, they didn't make any inserts. Just loads of GU subsets instead!

I did however, like the autos sets from 11-12 WAY better than 10-12. The only nice designs from 10-11 were the Golden Age subset which were all ON CARD autos. I got sick of the window cut sticker autos from the rest of the subsets.

As far as doing this years set?? I would suggest:

  • as soon as it comes out, you research as much as you can about any SP cards that there may be. In both the 10-11 and 11-12 releases, they had variants within the base set that were SP, but were still numbered within the normal base set. Some of these were as rare as >10 copies apparently.
  • Work out which 'sets' you want to collect, whether it is base/inserts or GU subsets, or autos sets etc
  • Don't buy ANY boxes to begin with, just buy any of the RARE cards from the set you want as singles. Some of these are very hard to find and you will be most likely to find them while there is plenty of product getting busted!
  • Wait a couple of months for the price to drop to $110 per box like it has for the last 2 years. From memory, they were both around $190 per box at launch and went down as low as $110 within a few months!
  • Then bust the s*** out of more boxes than you would have at release!

That is all!

Would anyone be buying a case at all? I love the new look and would consider buying a case but am not keen on paying customs a few hundred dollars.

And does anyone share the shipping costs from DA Cardworld or other US shop?

Good looking previews, if a bit samey to the previous year... Sound advice from drob50 but nothing like being among the first to bust open a release when its still new, hyped and exciting! Would love to have a case of this stuff (busted 3 cases of 10-11, Kobe overload!) but have foolishly put all my eggs into the NT basket :P

Excellent advice. I'd be going for a base/parallel set, an auto set and maybe a couple of patches here and there because I know they can get pricey.
