Hey fella's first off i have always had a prepaid phone and never been on a plan but im looking into going on one so im a little unsure what all the terminology means when it comes to looking at plans. If someone can explain what all this Cap jazz is eg: $49 cap etc. Im looking at having access to the net (don't need heaps of browsing data as it will only be for down time to check emails and browse a few forums etc) and probably only want to spend around $50/m. With things like having 1.5gb of data and say $550 included value text/talk on a plan does this mean i have this much usage in my $49 payment per month then after i use that i pay the regular charges or...?

Im torn between 2 phones atm, either the Samsung Galaxy SII and Iphone4 s. I don't want to have an iphone just because its the in thing but the fact i have an ipod and all my music is with itunes is swaying my decision which means i can stop using my ipod and just use the one device. Anyone using either of these phones have any feedback on them?

Cheers

what company you wanna be with coz depending on the company they all have different caps like some have more data and available like credit to use than others also id go with the samsung mainly because i just think they are better my sister has an iphone and she hates it im not to fond of it either my bro has a samsung and there alot better funner to :P

Im not too fused with which provider just yet i just want a basic understanding of costs per month etc. If a plan is say a $49 cap with 1.5gb data and $550 talk/text does this mean i have 1.5gb of data and $550 talk/text included in the $49 monthly payment or are there going to be other costs on my bill? Or do those extra cost only apply if i go over those limits?

Yeah the Galaxy SII is a better phone from what i've read its just the iphone would be simpler to transfer all my music to (10000 + songs :o) and use in my car etc.

well im with 3 they have a $49 cap the contract length is 24 months
http://www.three.com.au/pricing?mod=MobilePlans&planType=New%20Caps&planName=$49%20Cap

Yeah my car stereo is ipod compatible thats why im leaning towards the iphone so i can just ditch my old ipod and run every thing off the phone.

Just my 2 cents mate,

I had an iphone for two years and recently went to a shop and asked for the new one.
They said they didnt have any, so i said ok what else ya got?
Enter the best phone of my life, Dude the Galaxy S2 does all the same stuff the iphone can do.
The screen is bigger and way better.
Samsung allows you to customize things on your phone without jailbreaking or and saving songs into another folder to make it a ringtone.
The Samsung market place (app store) is friggen huge i got told its even bigger than the Apple app store.

I think im on a $49 or $59 Cap with 2g of data p/month and like $700 worth of calls and text p/month.

The only other things you will get charged for on your bill will be the following (if you select them)

Phone insurance....usually like 5-$10 p/month
Calls to numbers like. competition lines or those minga girls that stay up late and try to make.....well you know.
Message bank/ mailbox what ever its called you can be charged extra for it.

If you don't chose any of these things and you dont go over your allowed monthly limit (in my case the $700)
Then all you will pay is the $49 or $59 or what ever it is p/month.

If ya end up getting a S2 let me know and ill give ya some wicked apps, full on 3D style Yeah Boi!

Thanks Matt cleared it all up for me. Looks like i'll probably go with the Optus $59 plan $750 calls unlimited text and 2gb data with no handset charge on the Galaxy SII

Just a question about data usage, what sort of data would be used viewing forums etc?

Yeah anything you do on the net, plus some apps that require net connection like weather updates and stuff.
But unless you spend all day on the thing it would be pretty hard to go through the 2gb p/month

Helps if you have a wireless network at home as well, then you can use you home internet.

Forum viewing wouldnt use very much, its more about the uploading and downloading. say you download movies or songs things like that.

The plan you are looking at is the exact one that im on.

If optus are still doing it, they give you a free "home zone" thingy, that gives you and anyone that registers thier number free calls within
30 meters of it. Like put it in your house somewhere and once you register it it will make 3 beeps before the call and then its free.

schweet let me know how ya go mate.
I can help ya with anything on the S2, only takes about 30mins-1hr to ge use to.

I'm not that much into the tech side of things but from what I've heard Samsung Galaxy would be the go because it;s Android and not apple proprietary technology - so you aren't trapped into itunes or other apple specific product offerings.

Hey Nick...... cap plans basically work by allowing you to use up for example $500 worth of calls/text etc but you will not be charged anymore than whatever cap you are on is, such as $49 cap...... UNLESS you use over "$500" worth of calls/texts etc........ however..... from what I know call rates/texts etc are charged at a higher rate on capped plans than the standard rates, so it's technically not really $500 worth of usage, but still a very good deal. You will also be locked into a 24-month contract.

As others have mentioned, not EVERYTHING is included in your allotted $500 allowed usage towards your cap... be sure to find out what exactly isn't included at the time of buying so you know if it will be worth it.

Now onto phones.... I'm one of those people that don't get dragged into the iPhone hype, don't have anything against them, I just don't buy them just because they're a "iPhone", I ALL phones and get what seems best.

My current phone I have is a Motorola Milestone 2 (basically the Aussie version of the Droid 2); I mainly got this because it came with a slide out qwerty keyboard as well as being a touchscreen; and it's also Android based.

Now because you already have an iPhone, perhaps getting an iPhone would be useful to you because of iCloud?

As for providers, I would avoid 3 like the plague..... everyone I know that has been with them has hated them. Vodafone has also gotten some bad press over the last 6-12 months, but they've apparently been trying to fix all that up with upgrading their network; in saying that - they currently have "infinite plans", basically spend as much as you want - no limits; I'd assume there are some terms and conditions to this though so I would be sure to ask.

If ya end up getting a S2 let me know and ill give ya some wicked apps, full on 3D style Yeah Boi!

The S2 is Android based Matty, so the apps aren't exclusive to it. :)

Yeah i know man, but if your gonna go Android why not get the best.
Plus i have read alot about which phones eg.HTC, Moto, Samsung can be used with 3D launchers.

Just ordered the Galaxy S2 on Virgin's $49 fair go plan. There was a little less calls then Optus @ $400 value but free text to any mobile carrier and 2gb data and no handset fee. Also has roll over so what i don't use rolls over to the following month :D

Now comes the wait which im not looking forward to, i want it now haha

Matty do you have an app that can tell me my data and call usage and warn me when im close to going over?
What is this 3d launcher business?

Hey Nick,

Be careful with companies like Virgin etc, bad reception depending on what area your in. Same as 3 I'm with 3 and will soon be completely Vodafone and I can be in Adelaide CBD and goes into roaming which means you get charged big $$ for using data or playing games etc.

Yeah mate, Virgin runs on the Optus network (who im currently with) and i've never had any issues in my day to day use so hoping its all good.

SPB Shell is Launcher on Android phone. Same as the Springboard on a iphone i guess.

Data usage
My Data manager Free. Android market place
3G Watchdog, another good one.

Get used to the terms.
Launcher
Widget
Live wallpaper

Just spent last night on youtube checking out all the launchers going around. I like the looks of the Go Launcher EX and and its features and their little weather widget with clock is a ripper (Nicest i have seen so far).
Can't wait to get the phone to have a mess around.

Is that 3d launcher free?

Is your day to day use calls only or data? Maybe you're only using 2G now but its the 3G data networks that can be patchy and push you into roaming with excess charges.

Just make sure you know which calls are free or included in cap. Even "13" and "1300" are often excluded. International is usually included but may have a seperate(smaller) cap inside the total cap. You generally get charged for a paper bill these days too(or use direct debit).

Hope it arrives soon.
