I am wondering if it is any different to the Card Traders conspiring together to NOT bid things up against each other and divving up the spoils at the auction end?? (I have had numerous offers of this from Card traders) It irks me, Because at the end of the day... Buyers don't pay what items are worth. It's a double edged sword... If you list some things for what they're worth... It costs you a fortune, And you pay your ebay Dues regardless of sale... (Experiencing it now with current listings). $110 to list for $270 in sales (Thus Far) And if you list them on the cheap, You have traders conspriring not to bid against each other so the price doesn't get jacked up.
At the end of the day... Buyers only pay what they wanna pay.
eBay gets thiers... And the Buyer gets shafted....
If someone is listing something for 99c, And I think it's worth $20 and bid accordingly... If it goes for $35, Good luck to the seller, It just indicates someone believes it is worth more than I than I do!! It's not gonna make me pay more for it than I think it's worth!!
I'm not IN ANY WAY saying I agree with what has transpired here... But I can see how it might happen from time to time....
Rookie Error maybe??
Out of curiosity... Did anything go for unfair prices??
On another note, I got Shill bid a while back... I have overwhelming proof, But the Guy is good to deal with and he has great stuff from time to time... So I took it on the chin, And I've moved on!! It hurts, But I REALLY wanted what I got and I paid what it was worth... Maybe a touch more!! But now I have it and I don't need to keep looking for it.

Seriously if you have an item and you want $20 then put on for $20, if someone wants it they will buy it, same as your theory...

Robb,
I must say I totally disagree with that comment. I think it is a little narrow to think that just 2 ppl are looking at your item and are colluding. RL has soooo many more fans and you only need 1 other to start a bidding war. If you don't want to sell cheap then don't list cheap. I think we should ask someone like Glenn from Goldcoastcards as he always starts auctions at 99c and still continues to. He lists a lot and if it was such a bad way to do things he'd be broke but last I saw he's still around

Misha... disagree all you like, It has happened!!
People know my user name and my feedback plying that with what I am into...
It's pretty easy math!! and i have been contacted by other
traders trying to cut a deal on the final sale, urging me not to bid against them and vice versa,
I don't think that only 2 people are looking at my auctions, But I'm telling you it happens.
i know glenn from Gold coast cards starts his listings at 99c, His stuff is reasonbly recent, and sells accordingly.
I am not defending anyone, Or agreeing with anything.... And I don't get into it.... But EVERYONE knows it happens!!!
My point is, People only pay what they want to pay!!
if you list something that's worth $100.00 @ $100.00 you don't get the same audience as if you were to list it at 99c
And lets face it.... Ebay get MORE THAN enough money for there website. in the end with Paypal fees, Listing fees, and sale Price fees...
they get 10%...ish!!! paid for by the buyer, So i can see why sellers would try to save a few scheckles here and there!!
I know we ALL LOVE A BARGAIN boys, but I also know that those who like to Buy $100.00 product for $20.00 are the same ones who hate to sell a $100.00 product for $20.00
IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE!!

Robb, It prob does happen. I've never had it happen and it's something that'd be harder to prove than shilling. It's a bit rude that they try and cut a deal on the sale. You may have to upset a few ppl and tell them where to shove their wheelin' and dealin' ways. Ebay is for auction and OCT FS/FT IMO

Ripping someone off is ripping someone off no matter how you look at it. Those MVP cards sold for well more than they are worth and according to the feedback Chris still owns the majority of them.

I really like like Chris and have only had good dealings with him but he has made a pretty silly mistake here. You cant really defend these actions by saying o'well it happens.

Not defending anything other than my own hatred for ebay fees (It's thievery)... If that's a word??
I haven't looked into the ins and outs of what's happened here.
But to assume shilling doesn't happen... Is naive!!
Why it happens..... who knows??
My point is I can see why people MAY do it to try to get out of paying ebay fees.....
That's all

I think all these issues such as shilling, ppl working together to not bid against each other are all the results of the eBay's high fees. Imagine if we are allowed to list items for free, then no one will even think twice about listing a card that is worth 50 cents. But nowadays, you have to do some maths and figure out if it is even worthwhile posting an item on ebay because after all the fees and charges, you are left with nothing which defeats the purpose of selling all together unless you are so nice that you just want to give back to the hobby and help cards circulate. But most of us have day jobs and don't have the time to give back to the hobby, so to make ends meet, people will find ways to counter eBay's fees.

I am sitting on the fence with shilling, I am not against it but I am also not for it. It might seem like the seller shilling is squeezing every last cent out of the buyer but it was the buyer who put that amount there in the first place. If the buyer cannot fight temptation and really wants the card and ends up bidding a crazy amount for that item. It is the buyer's fault once again because he/she typed that amount in the field. The seller did take advantage of the buyer but he/she should not put him/herself in that position in the first place. Same with buyers contacting each other to not go against each other, that is within their rights to do so and I see nothing wrong with that. In response, the seller should list the item at the price he/she wants to sell rather than 99 cents to attract the attention of bargain hunters. If you want to give people the idea that a bargain is available, you have to actually allow it to sell as a bargain too.

I guess overall, what I am saying is that, no matter what tricks the sellers and buyers are using, no one is putting a gun on anyone's head to buy anything... so spend your money wisely.

I dont really understand people that think this way. We all see the high variance when it comes to selling cards. If you have an exact price you want, if its fair it will be snapped up. Selling with low reserve can get you unders but in the long run if you have quality you will get overs.
It does suck Ebay/Paypal get a cut of all deals but it beats going into the city and trying to sell them at the card shaq...........circa 1992-96

WELL SAID BRIAN!!
You gotta roll with it, take the good with the bad....
I find it a little hypocrtical to Whinge and Whine about paying an amount
for a card.. That i entered into the bid section as the amount I was willing to pay!!
It doesn't make sense.... If I only wanna pay $15, I'm not gonna put $30 just in case and
then whinge about paying $30.
I don't condone it... I don't do it....
But I don't feed people who do to the sharks because they do.
At the end of the day... The bidder only puts in what he wants to pay.
If the Bidder gets carried away and bids ridiculously... Then he deserves to get pumped 9He has no one to blame but himself)
If he gets it he gets it...
If he gets shill bid and loses and knows he was shill bid, Then send the seller a note with an
offer.
It's really a non event... If it's worth that amount and you bid for it, And get it.. All good!!
If not, Who cares about why?? You didn't get it...
Move on??

I know what you mean Sharkie...
But if it is worth $20... It's worth $20!!
And someone who wants it will know what it's worth and
expect to pay this much!!
I have found (in my limited experience) that the people who are most
offended are the ones who wish to buy some thing for $5, To infact on-sell it
for $20 (If you get my drift).. Some traders sping INEVITABLY to mind.
Which is hardly fair on the seller either.
My point is there is only ONE person that is responsible for how much I pay for a card.....
ME!!
If I regret the conditions of the purchase afterward... No else is to Blame.
If people don't like being shill bid... Then don't bid!!
Everyone bids at the last minute these days anyway, (I think to prevent this)
But even that is a pain at times... As it's often not convenient!!
On a different note, My best Mates old man is an Auctioneer... (Livestock, Farm Machinery etc)
They EMPLOY schill bidders.... Yeah, It's Illegal, immoral... And what ever else.
But it's been happening for a long time now.... And it won't stop soon!!
Most ebays schill bid with Private listings these days... they're getting smarter!!
I can't stress this enough.... If you pay more for something that you think it's worth,
IT'S YOUR OWN FAULT!!
If you don't... Why lose sleep about it??

---------- Post added 29-09-2011 at 12:15 PM ----------

Agreed mate.... But if you think there aren't schill bidders at housing Auctions,
you are gravely mistaken....
As ugly as it is... It is a stark reality.
once again... Have a limit, And Stick to it!!
Then everybody is smiling....

Its disrespectful to the whole concept of an Auction. Would you like to get shilled buying a house?
I treat unto others.....
