NRL Finals Discussion

This time from Justin Hodges a 'grub' over Brett Morris hit | thetelegraph.com.au

DRAGONS great Steve Morris has labelled Justin Hodges a "grub" after he shockingly hammered injured Dragons winger Brett Morris as he lay on the ground at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

Morris, father to Brett and Josh, said his son was brave to try to play on with the injury for 10 minutes, but condemned Hodges' tackle as a "barbaric act" which the NRL must stamp out immediately.

Brett Morris suffered a syndesmosis ankle ligament injury - or high ankle sprain - and fell to the ground with the ball in his hands in the 54th minute of his side's 13-12 loss to the Broncos. Hodges then slid into the Kangaroos and NSW Blues representative as he writhed in agony.

"He's a grub. It was a grubby act to do that while someone is obviously injured," Steve Morris said.

"To do that while they're on the ground. He was basically defenceless. It's got to be stamped out now.

"Say he had a shoulder injury and Hodges comes flying in to hit him like that. That's a barbaric act. You can't do that.

"What he did was low."

"He got him when he was obviously injured. He could have been seriously injured."

It is understood Brett Morris had no issue with Hodges, although other Dragons players were privately fuming about the incident.

NRL Match Review Panel chairman Greg McCallum said yesterday Hodges would not be charged when the panel meets this morning to look over the game.

However, Steve Morris said a penalty had to be awarded against Hodges and he warned that the failure of referees Matt Cecchin and Tony Archer to protect players on Saturday night has set a dangerous precedent for similar incidents in the future.

"That should have at least been a penalty," he said. "Can you imagine how the crowd would have reacted if it was a Broncos player? He'd get 10 minutes in the bin straight away.

"And the referees, they didn't do anything. No penalty, no nothing. I was telling people all week the referees would decide the game. It's not just because he's my son. It's just not something you want to see."Morris was more concerned about his injury as he hobbled off the plane in Sydney wearing a moon boot. He may have done more damage by playing on.

It is understood Morris hurt his ankle when fielding a wobbly Darren Lockyer drop-out. He battled on with the injury, and there are fears he may have done further damage while leaping high to snuff out a Broncos bomb.

He is all but certain to miss Australia's Four Nations campaign in England, beginning October 26, after scans in Brisbane revealed he had a serious ankle injury - not a broken fibula as first thought.

"It was a tough blow to end the season but I'm in good hands," said Morris, who will have further MRI scans this week.

Obviously this is Brett's dad so vey biased. I disagree 100% that it should have been a penalty, nothing illegal was done.

Congrats to the Sea Eagles, they played a fantastic game of footy last night and just blasted us off the park. Should be a cracker of a GF.

Was always going to be hard for the Bronco's with No Lockyer, a physical game last week as well, but will do wonders for them in the future some awesome young talent in their ranks..
Manly will win the GF imo only thing stopping them is the judiciary depends what happens to Matai and Williams, i really want the Warriors to win it and will be rooting for them, Storm are looking a bit flat, their last month of footy has been ordinary but they're the Storm and with Bellamy as coach and Slater/Smith/Cronk in the team, they should lift..

I agree Michael, I will be going for the Warriors tonight...........not because I like them only because it would be good for the game as a whole. What I would like to see one day is a Warriors v Rabbitohs GF.

Wohoooooo Laters to the Donkeys. Cmon manly or warriors to win i have 3 warriors predictors and 2 manly :)

In the Grand Final i'll be going for whoever wins tonight. A Melbourne v Manly GF is the two best teams from the year, but geez it's a worst case scenario as far as how much interest i have in the game. Go the Warriors!!!

Based on predictors I have.. I am going for Manly or storm.. Have 5 of each predictor wise.. And 1 warriors.. Which I did have alot more of.. But!!!!.. I swapped them out.. So.. I am hoping they lose just so it wasn't a complete waste......

Based on teams.. I like both storm and manly.. BUT BORING.. Done that..

I'd like to see Warriors win.. To teach me....... And because it might boost the game a little more in NZ..

I really felt for the Broncos last night - was a bad way for Lockyer to go out.

God i must hate Manly to be saying that.......

Good on you Dave now this is a true fan takes the loss on the chin. The amount of rubbish I've heard from my Broncos mates has been crazy. The Broncos showed a heap of ticker right to the 80th minute and I hope the Tigers take note. I don't like Manly at all but must wish a mate of mine Matty Ballin all the best in the Grandy. He had a blinder last night and is a champion bloke from good old Kingaroy :)

Im not too fussed who wins tonight as long as they win the GF. I have 2 warriors predictors and 1 storm predictor so warriors would be nice, however i dont have a Manly one so Storm or Warriors as premiers please.

 i am in a similar boat, on friday i checked my predictors, i knew i had a full set but i have a spare broncos x1, manly x1, warriors x1 and storm x2 so i am in kind of hoping the storm win the GF, its hard for me to say that but yes i would like to see the storm win the gf

hoping to see Ivan Cleary coach back to back premierships  warriors this year, panthers the next lol

seagulls buddy :)

Can someone tell Gus to shut up about the pigeons and how good Ivan Cleary is. Ruining a good game.
