Another Select rant.....

i agree with alot of what whattsup said...its true if they continue to make money producing the same product year in and year out why would they want to change?
i do get a little bit bored with the same kind of inserts(although sometimes they appearence may look appealing) but if the target market is the young kids and the parents then the voice of the average collector is going to be relatively weak.
i was pretty happy with strike but i would like to see that something a little extra to make me go wow

I dont think many of you would know much about high end collectors as there has been nothing for them to collect. Cards #/100 going for $400+, there is money flying around. The thing is these people dont walk around going "Oh, i am a high end collector", They are usually very low key.
What would a high end NRL card collector have to collect? 1 million of each sig (which a few people do).
I think there are cashed up people that are just waiting for a great release to spend big on, but they never get it so they just collect the Master Set and wait another year to be disappointed.

Think of it like this - when McDonalds started the only served a hamburger, fries and a shake. Over the years the showed some innovation and brought in the Big Mac, Sundaes, deli choices etc. Why - to bring more customers in and make more money. You can apply this story to any successful manufacturer - Sony, Apple, Gillette, etc etc.

If Select are McDonalds then they are just happy to keep serving that hamburger, fries and a shake - this is the very problem with Select - they have no competition and therefore see it as no reason to innovate and get better.

and yes - i think i will call this the Hamburger theory!:lol:

True but my point more is that any business needs to innovate to grow. These guys wont even support a trade day. I mean really how hard is it to give a couple boxes of old champions series so Nath can give out packs to kids that show up.

Glad to hear last night that McDonalds are bringing back the McFeast due to public demand :woot: Thanks for listening Maccas :v:

what ever happened to A-League cards btw? did select lose the license or just lose interest in that maket?

Wasn't it the A-League license that expired and Select didn't go for it again? Or am i thinking about something else??

A-League and Cricket it was that they let lapse

Select are a business, and their business is being profitable.
While I'm not a 'fan' of theirs, some perspective needs to be put into the argument.
If they included jersey cards, dummy cards, dual autos, triple autos etc etc, how much do you think a pack would be?
The complaints would be turned around from not being enough exciting inserts to "I cant afford any more than two packs".

The offsets for keeping prices of packs/boxes lower are reducing costs in production of these exotic inserts.
Their target market is presumably kids first, collectors second as there a lot more 'mum and dad' buyers who will spend $10 or $20 on packs for their
kids than there are case buyers.

If, as has been surmised, the NRL have final say on player imaging and rights usage, then they are also to be held equally accountable.
But who knows, maybe Trent Waterhouse's manager wanted crazy money for his client to appear on a signature trading card? A bigger
name like Cooper Cronk would theoretically demand bigger money than a journeyman such as Steve Turner. This would restrict the budget for other parts of the set.

If you sell a Darren Lockyer captain sig to someone for $600, are you going to actively take an interest in and aid what that person subsequently onsells it for to someone else two years later?
Probably not. Selects aim is to move as much of their current product in as short a time as possible, and then they would have an assumed safety mechanism agreement with their sole wholesale distributor, Cardzone, to buy the majority of the excess stock after a couple of months. Go back to the drawing board for Series 1 the next year, rinse and repeat.
If their products are continually getting close to sold out, then their business model is working for them, but not necessarily the consumer.

Anyway, just my two cents worth.

I personally doubt that they negotiate with every single player to produce a card of them, with different rates, etc. This would be covered in the licence fee to the NRL, the NRL has the rights due to the collective agreement that every player signs. If Select agreed to terms with every single player on a fee there would never be a single set produced!

The NRL has final say on the players Select selects, but they are not making the barmy decisions to not have a card of Jamie Lyon etc, I don't think. Otherwise why would these players be included in the Daily Telegraph set each year? When the NRL would have the same final say on that.

You're taking a very narrow minded view on business, I think if the product is rubbish and there are heaps of complaints each year and dissatisfied customers, then they are not a successful company. Just look around here to see Select's name is mud, is that how you would like your company to be perceived?

The thread with all those suggestions a while ago was a good one - a large amount of the suggestions would not be a economic problem at all. Better designs and different ideas for cards other than Club Player and Team of the Year? Yeah, doing that will bust the bank.

maybe there arent that many complaints each year? as someone mentioned, the target is kids/for kids and id say they are the majority of buyers (who i highly doubt care anough to complain), leaving a small section of disgruntled hard-core collectors. complaints from a minority is just a part of business...

Are you serious I LOVED THE MCFEAST burger, even up to recently for a sh1t stir if i order at the counter i say can i have a McFeast meal, they kindly tell me they don't sell it and i act surprised...

I like your Hamburger theory, so let me get this straight
Select = The Hamburglar who keep ripping us off :)

Oh trust me, i would not joke about the McFeast. They've just started commercials on TV saying it's back due to popular demand, they show a facebook page during the ad and say that the shaker fries are back too. Now i just need them to give the El Macco burger a ressurection too and i'll be set :)

How can you have shaker fries without an El Maco? I was very disappointed when i saw it was a McFeast. El Maco and McRib are the best special burgers of all time :kick:
I am gonna load up on those shaker fries sachets before they disappear for another 5 years :(

I could be wrong here.

2011 Champions..... they add signature cards people still not happy ?

2011 strike ...... they include club player of year and team of the year that we missed last year people still not happy ? Fair enough same old club player and team of the year. Top Prospects same but i dont think anyone is complaining about those cards unless maybe one of the players didnt play many games etc but at the end of the day you want a signature from every club right.

2011 Select start making cards in china first set bit dodgy this was always going to happen. Second set strike and quality is great. Fair enough both sets there was few common cards not right the odd insert here and there but ever card they will replace for you ! I'm thinking next year things are looking great for select. Get it right in china and we could be looking at some awsome cards next year.

As for the staff at select. Even thow at times they have left me angry you have to look at it like this. Imagine you get piles and piles of emails letter's phone calls EVERY day with angry people mostly people acting and be stupid. Would you get upset ? Fair enough somethings they have said is crazy but is a NICE phone call email to hard ? I've been to select many many times and there phone doesnt stop calling with people trying to scam them or going of over nothing like really do you have to get upset over few common cards ? I could go on all day about thousand different things i just think we are being to hard on them.

P.S lol do you really have to get on there facebook page going of when a kind email or call will get you what your after most of the time ?

i would love to see panini or upper deck or topps take over afl cards just seeing what they do with NBA and NFL cards is amazing and could just imagine the cards from AFL legend autos patches it would be insane
