One of my mates is showing an interest in basketball cards, and I wanna get a assortment of packs, maybe three or four different types from a card shop, to get him started and show the difference in sets (yes im too much of a tight arse to give him some of mine...) and i dont actually know any in melbourne...

anyone know any, and if they are good? or any remedies to fix my tight ways lol

theres a few place in melbourne that still sells packs and boxes. 1 near victoria market called cardzone(abit expensive) another in the carribean market(a guy wid a stall) have a decent price wid decent selection. cardmania in geelong isnt bad as well.

the one near Vic Market is not convincing.. the price and hmm the quality especially the packs.. I think the packs have been searced (u know what i mean)

the others havent been there :<

Cardzone is stupidly expensive ... Cardmania is meant to be good but have never been there

there is a few people on here that sell loose packs, you will get a better price by buying from them (Justdabestcards and Allstar_cards_inc both sell loose packs, there might also be others??)

Im getting the feeling that i should send him to ebay and tell him to look around, rather than send him loose in melbourne?

I dont understand card shop owners trying to charge over the top, exorbitant fees for boxes, individual cards or packs. Just because it is a small market it doesn't mean its a boutique market, like faberge eggs or caribbean islands... it means you have to look after your customers and build a healthy, friendly relationships with them, not try and squeeze every last $ out of them. Strange thing is, these would be the same people that either:

-Dont actually like collecting them, and are just doing it for $, you know the type, the ones that you read about opening 10 boxes of a new release box and getting angry that they didnt get a very valuable GU/auto/insert, while ignoring the 100's of base set, rookie set or lesser value inserts laying around them.

-Complain that they have no customers, and as a result they have to charge more... people, its the other way around, your charging to high and people, like you guys have said, can go to ebay and buy them much cheaper.

-Or other people i hate lol

Thanks for your warnings, my friend and i were going to peruse the shops in melbourne tomorrow, but now im going to go on ebay and tell him buy up that way... and drink beer while i do it

your forgetting all the expenses of having an actual 'shop' for cards..
eg. rent, overheads etc..

its extremely difficult these days to have such a business when you get ebay selling stuff so cheaply..

hence the high prices

Let me know if any of these are of interest...

sounds like i need to keep getting from eBay as well..
lol, i thought buying in Melbourne would have been cheaper, and i think i am wrong.. yes, i accept the fact shops are basically expensive because of their investment costs and etc.. but i think it's very potential to open a shop at decent place (not expensive rent) and order directly from card companies will truly benefit in Melbourne.

thanks for the info.

Thats been discussed at length in this household but finding the right location with foot traffic that is also low rent is pretty impossible. Would have to sell bulk at low price or otherwise eBay would just do the shop in. Imagine how you would feel when people walk in and try to haggle to the lowest eBay price when you know you are struggling to pay your bills and put food on the table.

2 places, in Dandenong Market on sats, Mal's stall, cheap boxes and singles, and on Sunday at Carribean Gardens, Harry's stall. He's probably the best outta the 2. Few of the guys from here head to Harry's on Sundays.
