Hi everyone, (this thread is not directed at anyone in particular but based on my observations and experiences in the hobby over the last 4/5 years)

Something that I have been thinking about for a while is the whole "My PC player" and how often people change their mind on a regular basis ! Initially it has been discussions with other collectors who have given cards to people to only see them sold a short time later which sort of goes against the whole idea of sharing and caring in the hobby.

One thing I really enjoy reading here is the joy that other collectors get when they are given free cards to go toward a chosen PC from other dedicated collectors :)

Early on when I got back into collecting, I was happy to join in the band wagon and give cards to other collectors to go toward sets & PC players collections and I have also been a lucky recipient of Free cards myself for my own PC and sets :) yet sadly there seem to be some people out there appear to abuse this thoughtful act shared quite often.

I for one can also understand that we can all change our minds regarding our collections from time to time ! So with saying that, is there such a thing as collectors using this method only to change their minds and cash in on others generosity ?

Does this happen ? or am I totally wrong in how I have percieved it ?

thanks for reading my random thoughts from the twilight zone but any thoughts on the matter might help ease my mind :)

Random I know but that is the way I roll

Well ATM, I have 8 PCs going.

All of different AFL players

7 of them are side PCs to the big one.. Simon Black PC... I will never stop collecting him!!!

But then, I guess I am not as committed to some of my side PCs... For instance 4/8 of my players have 1 card or less and have only played 3 games or less, so if they moved clubs, I would probably stop collecting them... Wouldn't be so hard as I still haven't got any of their cards

The selling of the free cards probz does happen, but i wouldn't think it happens a lot.... I guess it is kinda hard to monitor as it is done through PMs mainly

Dunno Terry, do u see it regularly

I suppose my question is why worry about it...............I give plenty of cards away and I know some have then been sold but again I ask why worry about it. If I give a card away I have no claim then over how it should be treated, traded or sold, if I worry about that sort of thing then I would not give them away, and I have given away cards ranging from one dollar to 900 dollars or more.

I've given many cards away over the years. Once I give them away I couldn't care less what someone decided to do with them as its out of my control. Richard Carlson summed it all well when he wrote the book " Don't Sweat the Small stuff". ;)

yer i couldnt care either.. its out of our control.. and usually the freebies are the cards that i dont mind giving up.. if it really annoys.. dont give out freebies.. because im pretty sure no one expects them: but i do understand where ur coming from.. and another thing about freebies.. the more u buy from me.. usually better the freebies.. ;)

Never changed my pc player, but have a pc that's not player based that I chop and change all the time.

Its ok to change ur mind about collecting someone, but I have seen someone here who changed their mind on a fortnightly basis. That to me isn't right. They obviously have to take a hard look at the reason why they are collecting in the first place.

I understand where you are coming from Tez, people do chop and change PC players etc but I would feel bad selling a freebie. If it were a $2 or $5 card then who cares but if it is a $10-20 card or more then I think it should be given (or at least offered) back to the person who gave it to you. Having said that though, in the world of freebies generally "what goes around comes around", so if you have obtained a number of freebies over the years it would be fair to say you have sent out just as many, so hopefully the goodwill evens out a bit in the end.

I assume Tez you could mount a similar argument when buying from people who give you a decent discount because you want the card for your PC. I personally wouldn't feel very comfortable flipping this card on for more than what I paid if i got a favourable deal from someone because they thought it was a PC card and staying in my collection. For example I know garth did Slobs a massive favour recently with a Pippen Timeless Treasure 1/1 he personally pulled and sold to him well below market rates.....now Slob won't sell this card in a million years, but I don't think it would be right for him to flip it for a huge profit when Garth did him a massive favour and could easily got a lot more on the open market.

Up until i joined this site it never occured to me that people collected 1 player, as i orginally started collecting Rugby League cards my aim was to collect every Ruggby League card, then reality kicked in :) , Anyway i have been the recipient of people's generosity and i would n't sell a card if it was given to me, but thats up to each person, if i gave a card, what the person chose to do with it is up to them... Anyway i just love collecting cards, maybe Im the Todd Carney of collecting cards can't help myself looking , searching at 4am for a card :)

At one stage I started up a couple of additional team collections besides my wolves.... which I will never stop collecting, and some people have given me cards for these collections, mostly base but some autos and gu... I decided to focus solely on Wolves, but of the higher quality cards I was given, I still have them for the most part... if I got rid of any it was cheaply to help out other collectors. I also still have pretty much all the base and inserts I was given, I respect the donation to my collection. Now though, since I have concreted my focus on wolves I can say without a doubt any card sent my way really won't be going anywhere unless its to another wolves collector. I don't understand people who chop and change player collections every couple weeks... but then... I'm more of a team collector nowdays.

I'm a die hard PC guy and have been collecting my fab five since, well, let's just say the dawn of time itself. To me, you collect a PC guy for a reason and for me it's something personal about the player which I truly respect and will always respect. Mash didn't turn out to be a HOF contender but my reasons for collecting him haven't changed from when I first started. Once you make it into my PC you stay there! Having said that - as the PC expands your dollars get stretched further and further and the PCs become less deep and impressive in terms of quality - it;s one reason I pick up so many random cards because there are so many guys I like but just can't afford to add to the PC (Admiral, Mutombo, Mailman etc) I suppose when somebody like Lebron, Rose or Griffin is a new rookie peopel fall in love with their new PC guy and the only way they can fund it is to sell off their old PC guys as they start to wind down their career....

For the record it wouldn't feel right for me to flip a freebie card to make a quick buck on charitable PC donations. Other freebie cards are fair game or stuff you happen to pick up cheaply but in the end 'what goes around, comes around' - guys who get freebies and end up flipping them consistently for a quick buck won't be getting too many quality freebies in the long run...whereas the guys who help me out I'd be more inclined to help them out too!

Once you give away cards, you give away any rights to say what happens to those cards. Having said that, if someone gives me cards for free and I decide not to keep them, I either offer to send them back to the original person or pass them onto someone else for free.

Hi,
Being new here I am pretty well lost BUT I can tell you that what you describe is with everything.
I do genealogy and we find the same thing. People find us and ask for free lookups/help, then sell the free information they have received to someone else.
I do not think it matters what you do or collect,,some people will take advantage of the whole thing.

My sons enjoyed collecting while they were doing it and even though they would like to find out they had a card worth millions of dollars LOL now they really just want to see another child get enjoyment from beginning a collection. (not an adult of course,,,another child)

My sons gave a heap of basketball cards to a lad years ago and within a week said lads mum turned up with a whole shoebox of baseball cards. My sons were over the moon even though they didn't collect baseball cards. I still have those cards in the same shoebox almost 14years later!!!!!
Some people are really honestly happy for what they receive....

its (changing pc) not something i have ever done or am likely to ever do. i dont understand how ppl have more than 1 pc player...i cant see how you could spend x amount of dollars on one player when you could spend it on a better card of your other player??? there are ppl on here who seem to chop and change on a daily basis and there are ppl on here who seem to get just about everything and there are ppl on here who seem to get some random stuff and guys on here who have a 2nd pc player because nothing of their main pc player comes up....as has been mentioned quite a few times ppl who collect things seem to be missing quite a bit in the mental department (im prime example!) so what ppl do on here really isnt a surprise but can be a bit of a pain in the a$$.

as for free cards ive given away close to 200 pippens to various collectors on here and never really cared what they've done for them...i couldnt be stuffed trying to sell em so i gave them away...no way id give away a card to 900 like tak35bne did (he does follow the broncos so not surprising :P ) because i dont trust anyone to do the right thing with generosity...plus i have a temper and would want to kill them if they screwed me

Look the way i see it is i can't afford all the nice cards of MJ i really like the designs of so the only option is to have a collection of another player from the same era i liked where i can afford cards like PMG's/Legacy's etc.

As for cards you give someone as a gift i have no problem with them doing as they please with them. You gave them to the person to make them happy and if selling the card later on makes them happy so be it. Sh!t its a hobby guys have fun and enjoy your collecting who really cares if someone chops and changes their collection to suit their preferences at the time?

I don't think there is anything wrong with collecting more than one PC player (unless you are chopping & changing all the time), if you happen to really like a few players & want to collect their cards then so be it. We can't all collect a superior such as Pippen! :p

I collect multiple players too and I actually had that recently happen to me. I had just dropped some $$ on a Melo patch auto, then BAM the next day a DeMarcus logoman /5 shows up on eBay. I wasn't impressed to say the least and now, with Melo being a Knick and all, I sort of look at that Melo patch auto and think what could have been lol.
