Hey all,

I know a few of you have had run-ins with this guy so i thought i might share some feedback he gave me on my NRL card price guide today.

"I have browsed through it, but I don't understand where these prices have come from. Is this more a "I wish I could buy this for that card" Price guide??? Or is it a starting bid price guide??? Certainly is not a true reflection of what I have seen on ebay in the last 10 years of looking & selling........Steve"

Im not trying to put anyone out of business however if your charging $85 - $90 for a 2010 Diamond Phenomenon card that others are selling for $40 - $50 then time for a reality check;).

hey mate,
i bought one of your price guides off ebay and i must say its very well done!!! good work!
only thing that took me back was when you had the 2001 all star signatures for 120 each and the 2009 classics signatures for $650 ish each.
the only all star signature ive found was $900 and all of the classics captains were mostly over the $1k mark.
im not saying that in any kind of disrespective way at all tho.
put me down to buy a copy of your next installment!!
again well done and cheers

I think we've all had some trouble with that eBay guy. Owen I haven't received my price guide yet mate. My eBay name is bodypositiveptyltd. I hope it's selling well. Chris

Yeah the signature cards where a little problematic at times because not too many turnover in a period. But the data we got from ebay said there had been a few sales around those prices and we decided to run with the numbers in front of us. Sometime collecting cards takes a little patience. I had been searching for a mint 1986 Scanlen's for about 6 years, had seen one go for $2,000 and one go for $1,600. I ended up picking one up for $900. After i bought that one i then saw another 2 go soon after for around the $1,000 mark. My advice - be patient. Will pay you back a million times over.

Hey Chris, have had a couple issues with the mail being slow from Newcastle. If its not there tomorrow let me know and i'll shoot another one out to you. Thanks Owen

$650 for a 2009 CS is about right imo. Thurston (arguably the 2nd pick of the bunch) has gone through for weeks at $659 with no bids. 2004 CS get around $700 for your average player and they should be worth a fair bit more than 09s, as there are more in the set and they are /40.
I think that Immortal sigs for $500 is way more undervalued.
I think if Steve ever wrote a price guide we would all be billionaires, I have never met him but i think he may be a little bit.......... "special"

'special' that's polite, but he won't deal with me anymore, thank god.

Appreciate that feedback guys - will only make things better for the next edition. I spent so much time on data entry and putting it together did not really think about the need to "focus group" some of the more premium card prices. Hindsight is wonderful (although i picked up a 3 immortal sigs for $450 last year - they are out there every now and again).

So, I'm not alone in having a less than sucessful transaction with this seller, sort of happy to not me on my Pat Malone, will have to purchase the book as it will be a great companion to another book I bought off ebay on the Centenary of cards 1908-2008 from a great card trader!, damn where did the wife put it

Last year is different though as they are still newish and there are alot more around. As they dry up (which they have) Prices go up. Also when they sell out at Cardzone (which alot have @$900) it also affects prices.

I would have thought it would be impossible to find a 2001 All Star sig at $120 though, let alone enough below that price to make $120 the average.

Is there some confusion between the 2000 and 2001 sigs here?

Absolutely, the cheapest time to buy a sig card is a few weeks/months after it has been released, when the initial burst of people wanting them ASAP has died down, but there are still a lot floating around.

Generally speaking, you won't see the prices that cheap again.

And finally: LOL at rarecollectables comment!

I liked the comment he made lol Not knocking anyones prices because at the end of the day the cards are worth what someone is willing to pay for them if they pay that high price its the persons problem for not looking into it. My ex gf brought a 2005 tradition common set of him for $90 ( not in folder ) lol I dont no how he does it at the markets someone once went of at me crazy at the markets because i was charging $35 for a 2008 limited edition premiers set i cant imagine if he seen Steve $100 (i no someone who paid $100 of him ) lol Also asked that guy how much is it on ebay he said $30 then i said how much is post he said $5 lol Go figure that one out.

Steve/Rarecollectables is a F*&KWIT and if i get the displeasure of meeting him i will be letting him know it.

He thinks he is ebay's nrl trading cards police, king or what ever he thinks he is. he is a blight on what i consider an enjoyable hobby and the prices he puts on his cards are obviously targeting the newbies to scam what he can out of them A FULLY FLEDGE MORON IN MY OPINION

Apparently he is banned from the Parramatta collectors fair because he gave the person who runs it a gobfull because someone else had the hide to be selling their collection off at cheap prices a few years ago. Had a whinge that they shouldn't be allowed to do that because it meant that he couldn't compete with their pricing so he wouldn't be able to sell anything and wanted them kicked out. He doesn't have to worry about things like that now. :)

Steve (rarecollectibles) is "special" and ALL the other objectives that others have described. He does prey on Newbies. I know a guy that paid $90 for a 1975 Beetson in average condition pre immortal status and his passing. He does NOT care for cards and only sees them and collectors as a source of income. I am still shocked by one of my first meetings with him when he told me how much he thought some 1980's cards were worth. When I told him I wouldn't buy them at that price he then flung his full folders of cards that are worth $20 each to him, 2m across his stall!!!

Being new back into footy cards recently, this price guide was a godsend. I really had no idea on values, didnt know if I was paying too much or too little. This is honestly the best card related item I have brought in the past 3 months and def gives me more of an idea. Thanks for publishing it, I too will be a loyal purchaser of future issues. Cheers

I've had a few dealings with this bloke over the years, both personally and via eBay - none good. All that has been said here is accurate and likely understates just what a grub he is. He preys on the naive and the uninformed, that's his thing. He intimidates. Compare his prices with others, check his eBay feedback.
As for the ASCC magazine, I got issue 2 and have nothing but praise for the time, effort and passion that Owen and others have put into it. I agree that some prices seem low, but it is a guide, it provides information and pricing advice. My advice, if you buy, don't buy from rarecollectibles01
