Gold Coast Suns

The AFL have already suceeded with the Suns. The Suns have only just started from scratch and they needed Ablett for the promotion of AFL and the Suns which has paid huge dividends thanks to all the media coverage whether they lose games or not.

I am predominantly a NRL follower as i have played and supported the code for 40 years as well as having collected cards for the same time. I have watched more AFL games in the recent 5 years because i believe the NRL have gone backwards. Like Paul Harragon said, when urging members to vote for the new owner, Newcastle are on the brink of Insolvency, which stresses the point that a lot of NRL clubs are broke or are on the brink.

The NRL need to look at their agenda for the future, like the AFL have already started, and ensure less quality players head off to England. NRL clubs need to be subsidised for players that have played for 1 club for over 5 years because too many players are overseas whilst our competition is lacking quality players and the ranks get thinner every year.

Couldn't agree more. I grew up watching Rugby League. In 1997 I was a lost sole for a week when my team Manly lost the Grand Final in the last few seconds. I lived , worked and breathed Rugby League for 7 years sub contracting to NRL clubs. These days the only time I get excited about League is Origin time and Semi Final time. If AFL is on one channel and League is on the other I will watch the AFL and flick over to get a score in the league. Two years ago this would have been the opposite. This is all down to the management of each code. The AFL put a team into a Rugby League territory like the Gold Coast and they will do everything they can to make it work. I have no doubts it will. Last night was game 1 . Lets make a judgement after a couple of seasons. I saw a lot last night to get excited about. Lot's of young kids making debuts and some were outstanding. I think Carlton were very hot last night and I think up against a lessor opposition the score line would have been a little less lopsided. The Suns are a great thing for the people of the Coast. If you love your sport you will have the opportunity to go and watch 2 of the great codes live. Even if you do not support the Suns you can go and watch your team play them if your from up this way.
I think even the most single minded or one eyed supporters of the game have to recognize the major positive to come from expansion. The NRL need to catch up with this one. I also think some people on this forum may be under estimating some of the Players who have gone to the Suns. Yes Ablett went for massive money but I think the challenge for him to build the future for the Suns is a massive one and may be the defining action of his career. I think he probably finished last nights game thinking about the challenge ahead and not about wishing he was back at Geelong. Can't wait to see the Suns win their first Game. ( Essendon Supporter )

Gary Ablett won the Premierships on his own, did he Ian? Campbell Brown as well?

Why do you think the experienced players joined the Gold Coast Suns?

Of course they didn't win them by themselves... But were they not both big parts of said teams? So because they didn't win them Premierships by themselves they have nothing to pass on too young players just starting out on their professional careers? To say they can not teach and instill anything to the young players that they are playing with is, stupid, shows that you might not have ever played the game? and basically goes against everything and anything people that have played, coached and been administrators at the highest level are saying! It's a joke and shows hatred towards a NATIONAL game to go along the path some people are going with this!!!!!!

Did I not state in my first post that money would have been a factor? Learn to read posts in their entirety before you keep dribbling on and on.

Players would have moved to the Gold Coast for money, of course they would have, they have secured their financial lives! But their would have also been other reasons for certain players! Get of your high horse and embrace what is nothing but a good move for the AFL.

It's actually good to see some people can see it for what it is and realize its a GREAT thing to happen. The others are just sour pusses because they lost top players to the GCS.

I'm enjoying this, Ian. You're getting angrier and angrier, and becoming personal.

That's funny

I am going to bail out of this thread now, before I receive a warning or a ban (I have already had 2 warnings previously).

Anyway, been a good debate!

Great reality check for ppl who thought the Suns would gun it up this season.... personally, i think that 16th for the Suns tbis year would be a good effort..
A lot of rookies played very well and i enjoyed the return of daniel harris
Not all of the players wnet to the Suns for money.... We(The Lions) didn't have the money to pay him this year and Fraser probz also wanted to play at any club that would give him gametime and Gold Coast were that club.....
Wait 5 years and GC will be a powerhouse with all those rooks, but to all supporters: Don't have high hopes for three more years

Just my two cents

Who's gonna be 17th? Brisbane?

I can also see GC being f****d in 5 or so years if their rookies become superstars and demand more money on top of Ablett and then can't keep them all.

GC were smart, they got Abletts brother the year before, and that with the money you would have to think he was always headed up there.
I agree with liam too, when all their top 10 draft picks start demanding more money, I reckon GC will only have the budget to attract older players at the end of their careers
Unless some creative financing comes into play, wont be the first time!!!

 at all the animals waiting to pounce on a young, inexperienced team!

They had 12 players making their AFL debuts.... They had a heap of stars/quality players that were severely under done, it's a team thats been thrown together, what other result did people expect? Of course they were going to get smashed, and will continue to be smashed here and there....

It's good for the AFL, unless your a Victorian that believes the game shouldn't be played outside of your borders...... Which I know there would be a few around here.

Anyone that thought/thinks money wasn't a major motivator of some of those big name players moving is absolutely delusional, of course it was. They are now all but set for life and don't have to worry about money! I know most of you will sit there and claim club loyalty and blah blah blah, as would I, but imagine being offered that sort of money? Like actually being in the position to take up or decline that offer... It wouldn't be as easy as you all would like to think!

As for Ablett, The money was huge, he had done everything he could at Geelong so why not try something else? Of course a few of them will be thinking "Geeze, did I make the right decision?"

Everyone needs to get the hell over it, realize that it's going to be good for the AFL as a WHOLE!

If I was a Melbourne, Richmond or Nth Melbourne supporter after 20 years of concessions and $$$ being gifted to Lions and Swans and now were struggling to survive and had to it all again for another 20 years for the Suns and Giants, then I reckon I wouldn't be believing this 'growing the pie for all of us' story.

But that's just me.

Myself being a massive NRL fan on the Gold Coast, I love the fact they got smashed. AFL fans on the Coast have been talking the Suns and AFL up as being the superior game and belittling anything to do with Titans and NRL.

Whilst I think that there can be room for both codes and a healthy fan base whereby Gold Coasters can adopt both teams, AFL fans have really segregated themselves amongst sports fans up here and created an "us and them" mentallity which has seen alot of NRL fans hating AFL. I would have been very happy to go watch a few Suns games but the fans "us and them"attitudes have given me an I don't give a crap factor. A good ass kicking or 2 may wake the Suns/AFL faithful up.

Glad the Titans won last night too, I bet.

I can see how that looked personal! Wasn't actually meaning it to be, was more trying to qualify the response and so on! My bad for taking it that far! Was not my intention!

Yes, Im all for a good debate, hence why I get right into them sometimes!

Wouldn't surprise me if Demitriou told Port Adelaide to throw the game in order to gain interest in the South East Queensland region, which is a Rugby League stronghold. Demitriou took a gamble accepting the team and would have looked stupid if they were a massive fail for much longer like they were in their first 3 games.

Just a hunch!!!

In my opinion the Suns via the AFL just got there investment back double!

Just remember that the AFL paid for Ablett to be at the Suns and yesterday was payday for all involved!

Very good business strategy that the AFL have implemented that the NRL lack in foresight!
