Did anyone watch the debut of the AFL's 17th team, the Gold Coast Suns last night? I did, and I LOVED the result

We have read for months about how the experienced players can "teach the young kids" and "build a culture" at the new club.

Fact remains, Ablett, Brown, Bock, Harbrow, Fraser and Brennan signed with the new team for the money only (if you were serious about playing finals football, why else would you move to the Gold Coast?).

The "lesson" that these experienced players have given the 12 debutants from last night? Simply that money is more important than success.:(

who really cares, its afl in rugby league territory. doesnt look particularly good for the gws experiment. what a waste of time and money.

That's what I can't understand Rebecca, why these blokes wouldn't stay at their clubs and try for more success. Interestingly, the Cats have had two really courageous wins already this season.......

 at all the animals waiting to pounce on a young, inexperienced team!

They had 12 players making their AFL debuts.... They had a heap of stars/quality players that were severely under done, it's a team thats been thrown together, what other result did people expect? Of course they were going to get smashed, and will continue to be smashed here and there....

It's good for the AFL, unless your a Victorian that believes the game shouldn't be played outside of your borders...... Which I know there would be a few around here.

Anyone that thought/thinks money wasn't a major motivator of some of those big name players moving is absolutely delusional, of course it was. They are now all but set for life and don't have to worry about money! I know most of you will sit there and claim club loyalty and blah blah blah, as would I, but imagine being offered that sort of money? Like actually being in the position to take up or decline that offer... It wouldn't be as easy as you all would like to think!

As for Ablett, The money was huge, he had done everything he could at Geelong so why not try something else? Of course a few of them will be thinking "Geeze, did I make the right decision?"

Everyone needs to get the hell over it, realize that it's going to be good for the AFL as a WHOLE!

It is not the young, inexperienced players that are the problem. Ask I asked at the start, what exactly can Ablett, Brown, Harbrow, Fraser teach these young footballers? Plenty of blokes get plenty of enormous, mind-blowing offers (eg Joel Selwood and Dane Swan to name a couple), but only a select few take the money and run.

yeah what was Khunt thinking after the game, in the press conference his coach bagged him out, he must be crying all the way to the bank.

like i said, you may care down there but no one cares on the gold coast, its full steam ahead titans

Myself being a massive NRL fan on the Gold Coast, I love the fact they got smashed. AFL fans on the Coast have been talking the Suns and AFL up as being the superior game and belittling anything to do with Titans and NRL.

Whilst I think that there can be room for both codes and a healthy fan base whereby Gold Coasters can adopt both teams, AFL fans have really segregated themselves amongst sports fans up here and created an "us and them" mentallity which has seen alot of NRL fans hating AFL. I would have been very happy to go watch a few Suns games but the fans "us and them"attitudes have given me an I don't give a crap factor. A good ass kicking or 2 may wake the Suns/AFL faithful up.

Funny how NRL fans do exactly the same things in AFL majority states/cities/places........

So Ablett and the likes have nothing to teach/give the young players...? Your fking kidding right? Brownlow Medalist? Premiership winning players..? Yeah, they have nothing to teach or instill in young players at all!

Get of the juice mate!

Oh, and name offers that match the one Ablett got that other clubs have been able to offer..? Oh, wait, they haven't because what the GCS and GWS are being allowed to do has NEVER happened in the AFL before....

Bill Goggin got a huge offer in the 60's by a SANFL club and he would have been the highest paid footballer ever and turned it down.

Gary Ablett won the Premierships on his own, did he Ian? Campbell Brown as well?

Why do you think the experienced players joined the Gold Coast Suns?

You cannot of expected them to do good in their first game. Over time they will become a very good football club the young stars they have got at the moment can only get better. In 3 or 4 years all of their players from the Draft this year will be 23/24 and they will become a very good and successful team over the years same thing will happen to GWS.
