Today was a big day for me and it comes with a bit of a story that still makes me laugh to myself when I am reminded of it.

I am not sure where it began exactly but I can attribute it to never having an enjoyable experience at the dentist as a child. Another thing that happened that compounded the issue was having a doctor give me a blood test (i had tons of them with nothing like this happening) She ends up missing the vein repeatedly but persisted to the point of me passing out .... The next day I had a bruise running from halfway up my forearm at one end and half way up to my shoulder :(
What made matters worst was when I asked what happened, I was just told "oh, you must not like the sight of blood" talk about a kick to the ego

This comment began to play on my mind because of an induction I was due to attend before I started at a meat works on the "slaughter floor" there was roughly 10 newbies in total which included 3/4 girls ..... My heart is already beating a little quicker at the possible embarrassing moment that may happen and the doctors words ringing in my head
The manager then says "This is the test for all new people and if anyone is going to drop (pass out) at the sight of blood, it will be here !"
No turning back now as the door opens and the scene in front of me was worst than any of my fav scary movies SAW and hostel etc. :kick::kick::kick: but happy to say that on a second opinion a week later, It turns out that the other doctors blood test was so bad that it more than likely put my body into shock  he was shocked at how big the bruising was.

Today was the day to conquer the DENTIST chair - Besides the fact that I had to sell 1 of , if not my best Michael Jordan auto to cover some of the $4000 cost :(

Never again will I wait as long as I did between checkups and it ended up being a bit of work getting done.
Broke 2 teeth some time ago while going through the clubbing/tongue piercing stage
Also needed to get my wisdom teeth pulled plus one more just for luck or to pay for the dentist holiday abroad
7 teeth in total that included 4 wisdom teeth had to go and it was a breeze. Still hard to talk and bleeding slightly but nothing like I was expecting :)

Sorry for the excessive rant but hopefully it can give others confidence to take on their own fears

Im with ya on this 1 terry.
I sit there in the chair...palms sweating and i jump as soon as they touvh me.
Even now i need a heap of work done but im a coward !!

Try a nerve extraction !!
Basically they have to stick a needle directly into the tooth nerve..
O MY GOD..!!!
Ive shunned the dentist since then.

That sounds nasty Steve :( I have a horror story for you that is prob not for here ;) Just pay to be knocked out ! Much easier to sleep through that kind of experience

Nice rant Terry. I've never ever been afriad of the dentist.. Dunno never really phased me.. After saying that I'll tell ya what I am afraid of is.. frogs and spiders.. Lol something about them just scares the crap outta me.. Hahah..

I have had 2 root canals. The bit I hate is the part where you slip your hand into your pocket to get your wallet out. The other bit is fine with me. My brother has fillings without using the needle to numb the area. In the last 2 years I have had an extraction, 2 root canals and 3 replaced fillings. And I have only had about 5 - 10 headaches since then.

Great rant Terry
Ever since having teeth problems when i was young which included braces, once i moved out of home i havent been back to the dentist since, I still even have the metal wire glued to the back of my bottom teeth to keep them straight during the braces stage. I havent seen the dentist for a good 7 years now i think.
You could say i have a somewhat fear of the dentist, the smell, the atmosphere, the rubber gloves and let alone some stranger sticking his/her hands in your mouth is disturbing.
I know one day i will have to return to that god forsaken place, i just hope they put me to sleep before it happens.
Also the thought of having to apply for a personal loan to pay for the work is also scary.

I agree, i have been getting my teeth sorted for a few months now. The procedures arent too bad but being a few k lighter hurts the most (no anesthetic for that pain either). I wouldnt be the only one to think medicare should cover dentistry.
The worst bit though was at the beginning when i had to have 20 years of crap cleaned off my gum line, the oral hygienist was a rough visit.......her job title was very misleading too.

I hear you loud and clear mate, The dentist even said I should get braces !!! Nearly 40 years old, I don't think so.... Don't wait any longer ! Its a bit like letting a mechanical fault happen on your car, If you hear a noise coming from your car and don't look into it ! the one simple problem can easily become more serious if not looked into ! Pay the extra to be put to sleep and the rest is pretty easy !!!

UPDATE - the morning after

Hardly any pain at all ! a bit like a sore jaw if you have been hit on the chin by a girl

I recently visited the dentist for the first time since 1995 (i was ten). Suprisingly it turned out all good. Was told i would eventually need another visit (i'm 25 and still have 2 baby teeth) as the two teeth that did not break through are sideways and will never appear so i will be getting implants. Hey at least i can say i've got implants and people will wonder.

I think a visit to the dentist is best said (and forgive me I forget which movie this is from), Dentist says this won't hurt a bit.
Guy holds out his hand and says " Put your balls here, you hurt me and i'll hurt you".
Always thought that was poetic justice :D

Cheers mate :) What are the benefits of getting braces ? would love a second opinion from someone that was in a similar position ...

Nice rant, I bit my dentist when I was 5...still see him...I think he flinches though everytime his finger is in my mouth...

I'm not too scared of doctors and dentists now...I kinda got used to it after 3 operations in 3 years...what scares me now are magpies!!!

This year has been good for me although I do need my wisdom teeth pulled out...been busy though and I'll get put on a waiting list anyway...only hurts every now and again so I'll survive until then...

Didn't private health insurance cover it for you mate? $4k and your best card is a big price to pay...

i had to have 3 wisdom teeth out not long ago, 3 seperate visits caause he said he was too busy to do all 3 at once, first tooth no problems, 20 minutes in and out no pain really. 2nd tooth, different dentist plus 2 dental students, dental student are doing my local anaesthetic and put it in the wrong place, dentist cuts into my gum and BOY did i feel it, they gave me 5 more pain killing shots but because it was some UBER-TOOTH they had to drill then crack it in half which was possibly the most painful thing I have ever had done in my life, Then after the students fart assed around and they started stitching me up the needles started wearing off and I felt the last 2 stitches go in, so it comes time for tooth number 3, had to go the same dentist as it's for the health fund, different dentist same procedure. Told the bloke aboout last time so he gave me more needles, was really great couldnt feel a thing. Now however I have a fear that I will be able to feel everything they do and it's only after they start that I calm down a bit. I would have to out dentists into a category with Lawyers, Telemarketers, and Home Shopping hosts. God awful people they all are.

Dentists are people who give you physical and financial pain.
Lawyers are arrogant people who think they are king of the world...even the ones who are on your side...
Telemarketers are so damn annoying they probably wouldn't buy the stuff they are trying to sell even if someone pain them...any they wreck your dinner time...
Home Shopping presenters are so thick they think they can con us into buying crap Made in China which doesn't even work...I doubt they even own the stuff they're promoting...

Love the list Jason!!!

hmm.. had a surgical extraction about 6 months ago.. and i tell you what.. harden up its not that bad!! lol if you feel something tell them and they will fill you full of numbness.. after all you are paying.. i have been to the dentist heaps since then and have not been worried one bit since the dentist said what happened to me was pretty much the worst that could happen..

anyway just to give you an idea.. it was 1 1/2 hours of 1 tooth getting pulled.. it had a root cannal treatment started before and kept snapping.. so every time it snapped they cut the gum out from around it to get grip again.. after a few times of this repeating it got to the end where the little bit of tooth was almost just completely cut out!! blood was splattering on my face and all over the dentists gloves and the assistant was making funny faces when he cut chuncks of my gum out.. anyway.. afterwards 4 stiches and i was fine..

on a funnier note.. my older brother had a tooth pulled from the right side of his mouth when the dentist had injected the opposite side.. lol.. anyway when my brother started yelling he shoved his knee on his chest and yanked hard and ripped the tooth out.. my brother told him afterwards what had happened and he said "oops.. ohh well.. its only pain" haha

probably not funny to people scared of dentists but my brother and i had a laugh about it afterwards..
