Demand for a Brisbane card/jersey store?

I am looking at starting a basketball card and jersey shop in the western suburbs of Brisbane. I was wondering if this is something that people would be interested in, or if Brisbanites simply prefer to buy only online these days?

The business model I'm looking at would have prices only slightly more expensive than the cheaper ebay prices. Nothing like the disgusting prices that I have seen in some retail stores throughout Australia on my travels.

The store would be focused on selling boxes and singles.

The store would most likely only be open on the weekends and would be located in the western suburbs, perhaps somewhere such as Kenmore/Indooroopilly.

Great idea as there is basically nothing in Brissy of this nature.

My advice though would be to broaden your focus to include all sports and non-sports items as you could not derive any income from basketball alone. This is a very tough business as online is so much cheaper with very few overheads. You may want to ask member redtorana for any tips or advice as i believe he basically went from a store to basically online. My personal belief is that you cannot compete against online traders.

Hope this helps.

I wish you the best of luck with this endeavour.
Most of the card shops on the coast here have had to branch out into other areas to keep the business viable.
Do up a good website and im sure that will help your business no end.

Good luck mate, even though im not in Brisbane you still have my support.
I would rather shop at a card shop than online anyday

I am sure you would get people through on weekends but as said before, you will need AFL and NRL as well as the basketball. And maybe baseball as well.

Hey mate.. I live in Brissy..and think it would be a killer idea!! I Know there are a few basketball collectors..and I know ppl are always wanting a jersey or two...I think with some planning you could have a massive crack at it.... I would suggest NBA boxes...MLB boxes, and both NBA MLB jerseys as well as NRL AFL jerseys and some memorabilia.. some what of a overlay to start but the more options you give people the more will come check it out..

Cheers
Gary

I collect afl and ufc if there was a shop somewhere near i would definatly travel to buy! Buying online you dont get to know who your buying from

I'd come all the time If it had decent priced UFC, NRL etc. I'd be happy to pay a few extra bucks to a shop. Ecspecially if it was a viable place to sell/buy/trade singles, spares, insert sets. It's a lot easier to focus simply on basketball and a lot less start up cost but I think to ensure or at least have the best attempt at success as a business you need to be diverse and stock a range of card types. Non-Sport would be a very smart idea as these are hugely popular across many age groups and level of collectors.

But, whatever you choose to do; I wish you the best of luck!

I'm a Brissie based baseball collector, there may be the odd sale of baseball but I wouldn't focus on it much. Maybe wait and see what kind of interest there is when the new league starts in November. I wouldn't stock any at all to begin with to be honest. MLB clothing is pretty popular though.

Good luck mate  I would love to be able to walk into a store in Brisbane and buy some random packs and just look around and support someone doing things the old fashioned way locally!!! I am sure Graham and the mods would help you out if you returned the favour... Think you should include some AFL, NRL, cricket to broaden the horizons

Anything, mainly cards as I can't afford memorabilia. Genuine memorabilia is hard to come by down here. Postage is a bugger from US.

Mark.

Thanks for the feedback guys - I would like to have it up and running by the start of the new NBA season in early November. I will provide further details as they are available :)

Update: we will start off by selling some NBA boxes, packs and singles at the Sunday Discovery Markets in Oxley (south/west Brisbane), starting in one fortnight. We will be giving away some freebie packs to all SEQ Ozcardtrader users. We are currently building our inventory of NBA products and we are in discussions with Select about supplying us with AFL/NRL cards. But if you have any requests for MLB, UFC or other American sports cards, please let me know and we will stock it for you. We are hoping to have ~50 unopened NBA boxes from 93/94 to present on offer.

Hey guys, the Discovery Markets are on Sherwood Road, Rocklea. It is the giant marketplace that is the location of the flower markets on Saturday. Here is the link to the website.

I will put up a proper thread with a full list of boxes and prices when all of our shipments arrive. As for the free packs that we will be giving out, I was thinking a free pack of SpX for all local Ozcard members.
