The nightly news often brings me to tears but it has never given me goose bumps before tonight....

I couldn't believe my ears, could it be true, St George's prodigal son Mark Gasnier has been linked with St George and a return to the NRL........ but even better, this year. :kick: :kick:

Apart from my obvious selfish reasons, how good is this news for Rugby League, it might even shut Phil Gould up about the mass exedus of talent to other codes with Sailor / Rogers / Tuqiri and now hopefully Gaz back, then not to mention the best of Super League are already here in Ellis and Burgess.....

Cheers

Actually it wont shut phil gould up about players switching codes, yes he did come back but he still left in the first place, leaving just opened up a new spot for other good players to take his place in the rep squads, i think he will find it very hard to slot straight back into rep footy cause he has proved to be a deserter once before, whats stopping him from doing it again.
Good to see him back but i say once you leave, dont come back....

Has agreed to 50k for the remainder of the season plus match payments.

2011 - 400k
2012 - 550k

He always gave the Tigers trouble with his fottwork and strength. However, if the Dragons want to use 10% of their cap next year and 13% of their cap in 2012 on an outside back who isn't even a ball player then i'm all for it.

Dragons were talking about trying to get Josh Morris back next season. Morris is a gun and would be on a much more realistic price for a centre but this will squash those plans.

I love how star players leave in their prime (chasing $$ i might add), come back all washed up and welcomed back into the NRL with open arms.

Just a bit of background info regarding why Gasnier left, and also the clause in his exit re garding he can't play for anyone else but the Dragons till 2012 if he ever decided to come back to the NRL, this clause was requested by Gasnier himself, not the club, but himseld
Mark did the club a good turn in negotiating his last deal. He took a large chunk of his salary as a non-guarenteed 3rd party sponsorship, to ease salary cap pressure on the club.
When the deal collapsed, he faced the proposition of an income that was not comensurate to his financial commitment level. In reality, when the NRL decided to not step in, he was left with no choice but to go

Another thing to add to this is that Mark's better half (who I worked with before she went to France) has a family member who has a serious illness, which is one of the big reasons why she has come back to Australia to be with her family.

This has a lot to do with his decision.

True unfortunately nothing would shut Phil Gould up, deserter is a bit harsh given the very amicable terms he left the Dragons on and the fact it is to the Dragons he is hopefully returning too. A deserter is someone like SBW...

Also bugger me, given the chance to earn good dollars and play in Europe / France (Claudine Gasniers other half whilst born heer has French parents) travel the world and experience a bit of culture other than own etc who wouldn't go??

Granted Josh Morris should also be playing for St George, maybe in 2012 after Cooper retires.......

I'm not too sure how many ball playing centres there are or even should be.....but remember those beautiful flick passes.....hopefully the salary cap will be changed to include discounts for local Juniors and we will get both Morris and Gasnier back and heavily discounted

Yet to be seen if he is washed up, 2 years in Union will have probably freshened him up......Lote is 2 years older and carving the NRL up.

It just sounds right to me that the name Gasnier should be associated with the Big Red V. =D>

Yep, that was also one of the main reasons he went over there.

I have to say it was funny to see him turn up at our work Christmas party before they headed off to France!

As a league fan i was unhappy that he left but as an individual, club loyalty means nothing its all about $$ plus the bonus of life/travel in Europe, i doubt anyone would say no to that.

Not many ball playing centres out there which is why i was saying that 550k is an aweful lot of money to be throwing at one centre.

I remember St.George attempted to throw Gasnier into 5/8th at the start of his last season but i'm pretty sure that was changed very quickly after a couple of games.

Yes, i remember the flick passes but the most prominant memory i have is of Pat Richards rag dolling him over the sideline in the 2005 Grand Final Qualifier ;)

Here is reminder if anyone wants to check it out :)

Well Saints could have done what the Dogs / Storm did and cheat the salary cap and keep him in the NRL!!
It;s funny how people give it to sportsmen who change clubs,/ sports to earn more money, yet if you changed jobs and Gasnier gave you a gobfull for moving to another company you would be the 1st to tell him to F off, as you have bills to pay, a mortgage, school fees etc, but sportsmen don't...

Yeah, poor Mark, his hands were tied - he had no choice but to go to rugby union.......

i hope he comes back to st george so overated imo. i just hope penriths offer is good enough for inglis

YouTube- One Magnificent Night.. Tigers into 2005 GF

Thanks for bringing back those painful memories, I remember it well, we started very slowly in that game after having the previous weekend off and then bombed plenty of chances in a strong 2 half......oh the pain of yet another finals dissapointment....

Cheers
