This story is from Friday's Herald Sun....is anyone collecting them? Could be a collectors item in years to come...especially as I imagine some sets might end up burnt or worse!!;)

Footy fans can collect umpire cards - Daryl Timms

June 12, 2009 12:00am
FOOTY fans might love to hate them, but now they can collect a set of umpire collector cards.

The AFL Umpires Association has released its own series of 72 cards featuring field, goal and boundary umpires in match day action shots.

And, as a bonus, there are three Grand Final legend cards. The set, available through the AFLUA website, sells for $50.

A description of each umpire, with occupation, age and achievements, is on the back of each card.

While ex-Essendon champion James Hird won't be rushing to buy a card of umpire Scott McLaren, demand for the sets is high, especially from budding umpires and memorabilia collectors.

AFLUA chief executive and former field umpire Bill Deller said this was the fourth release of cards.

"Now the cards are pretty well accepted and we get a lot of interest from the umpiring fraternity," Deller said.

"Interest is particularly from young umpires because a lot of them look up to the league blokes and they are keen to get their collections going."

He said only about 200 sets were produced and it was not a money-making venture. "We just basically cover costs," he said. "We are not a very financial organisation. We'd love to be able to give them away, but we don't have that sort of money, so we just try to recoup the expenses."

Deller said former players or coaches were not expected to buy cards, including ex-St Kilda coach Grant Thomas, who is the harshest critic of umpires.

He said sets were not marketed to the public because they were not something that they would want to buy. Asked whether he expected Thomas to buy a set, Deller said: "Maybe he might use them on the dartboard but, if he is mellowing a bit, he might want to start a collection."

Deller, who umpired five Grand Finals, is not on a card. "But I will one day as I'm in charge of doing them," he quipped.

Grant Thomas said the cards showed umpires' egos were out of control.

"As I said, they should put their egos in their lockers at the start of their careers and pick them up at the end," Thomas said. "And I can't get fined $20,000 (like he did in 2005) for saying that."

All i have to say about "Umpire footy cards" is

WHAT A JOKE, I am sick of how umpires can and Do wreck a good game of football with calls that are just a joke at times (sometimes not even in the rules)
and to give them cards like anyone really give a crap about them is honestly laughable

I couldn't believe that there have been 3 sets released prior to this one....just goes to show that umpires are a breed of their own....not that there's anything wrong with that!!:lol:;)

hahaha, yeh read that today, i had to laugh, although who wouldn't want a ray "razor" chamberlain rookie auto card!!!

its also a little unclear in there what you get as well. its just $50 for a set? no sigs? the pic displays different styles.

has anyone bought these? or bought the sets in the past?

yeah as anthony says, steve from card zone was on there. Showed there shop too.

To be honest it doesnt really bother me if everyone hates umpires. Whats wrong with bringing out a series. Does it really affect you that much??

Yeh i don't think it makes a big difference but for $50 a set i don't think many people would like to collect the set

yeah im sure Steve said on Ten he was selling them for $20.... Cause the reporter goes not $50 and Steve goes no

Total ****ers.. egotistical...... umpires.... They think their bigger and better than the game.. when the couldnt make it as players, cause they were 2 soft to do the hard work, gym, and team things to make it..

Totally selfish and only think about themselves...

Totally agree with both Grant Thomas and Geoff Kennett on this one mates..

They will be worth $2 a set next year.... Stevie Wang will probably keep half of them and control the price :P

According the article at the start of the thread there was only 200 sets produced. Potentially a very collectable piece of AFL memorablilia.

Along the eastern seaboard we refer to them as White F*@#*_ maggots.
But on a more serious note I would be interested to see their profiles and professions.
Not sure if many would remember umpire Chris Mitchell but he was my P.E. Teacher for 3 years at Maribyrnong High School and he was a top bloke on and off the field.

It's a tough gig for the umps and some handle it better than others.

There definitely not gonna sell many to footy collectors. We call umpires Maggots in WA, do you guys call em that?
