Modern day metal..

Does anyone else think modern day metal is lacking the head pounding solos of yester year? Lets see what we can find from 2000-now

I miss the good old Metallica days. But love the newer-age stuff (not poppy shit, decent alternative bands).

Agreed. I'd rather here something from Tool or APC than a 5 minute guitar solo, OR something tight and shorter like Shihad puts out.....

Well, it's going to another direction..

Anyway, i think these days, many songs are lyrics-oriented.. i didn't mean it's not good, but in some cases, music speaks deeper than lyrics..

we don't really listen dream theatre for lyrics... maybe Bon Jovi yeah LOL.
But I like to listen MCR for lyrics rather than their music LOL

thats y i was talking metal, not pop rock hehe. Nah i could never get into tool of apc, sounds all like a load of whining with no crunch imo, but each to their own.

of course mate, metal in the 80s was so different, there were only 3 pre-requisites: long hair, tight pants, and blinding fast speed chops (chops = playing ability for the uninitiated). now the majority of guitarists see they can get by and be successful without any real talent, so solos arent needed anymore. theres still heaps of metal bands who do great solos eg your link to dragonforce, but for whatever reason by the mid/late 90s soloing was not cool anymore, people liked bands that just had riffs eg. limp bizkit, tool, korn, sepultura, deftones. even bands like metallica tried to get with the times and kirk discarded all solos in their songs.

solos are cool, but plenty of bands have shown you dont need them to be a great metal band eg killswitch engage.

heres my contribution, Lamb of God "ashes of the wake". the bit that kicks in at about the 2 minute mark where mark is wailing on those pinch harmonics just makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time. awesome!

thanks for the info lol i wouldnt have known that unless you had told me . I know what you mean though and i do like lamb of god and their use of fake harmonics, but i do loooooove a good solo.

personally ive never understood what all the fuss was about slayer. theyve got about 5 great songs, and the rest are just very similar sounding. people put them up there with pantera/metallica but i dont rate them much.

pantera is my all time fave metal band, and dime is probably my fave guitarist. he had speed, technical mastery, and most importantly rhytym and real groove in his playing (you can so see his blues and country influences). something that dudes like kerry king dont have.

hmm i thought kerry and dimebag were both tought by satriani atleast thats what i was lead to believe.

Slayer are possibly the best live band i have heard, but then again i think im biased lol.

All being said, its good to find people with similar (but different) tastes (i shoulda been born 10 years earlier)

my kinda thread
well just after seeing Trivium for the third time this year and the mighty Machine Head strut their stuff infront of a massive crows at the riverstage its hard to say their is no love for new metal. Last night was one of the wildest crowds ive ever seen and even MH said that Brisbane is probally the wildest and best fans on the planet and i know alot of bands say that sorta stuff but you had to be their to see how pumped they were to realise it was the truth.

anyways back to the subject at hand, metal in the 80's will always be far superior to any music that is brought out today because disregarding Black Sabbath thats were Metal music boomed and we saw legendary bands like Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth. And also you had ya Hair metal scene which i dig aswell with the likes of Van Halen, Scorpions, Whitesnake, Ratt and Motley Crue. The finest metal band in this day and age and the founders of the metalcore genre if you will is Killswitch Engage. Like JZA said they havent used many solo's in their music but it doesnt mean their music isnt any good or they cant wail a tasty solo, you only have to look at the solo in the Dio cover to see how perfect it is played. Also other great metal bands are Children of Bodom, Shadows Fall, Unearth, Trivium, Machine Head and the list goes on an on. One to look out for though is the rise of Bullet for my Valentine. Their debut album was given Album of the Year by Kerrang in 05 and they are soon to release their sophmore release which is going to kick so much ass. I heard one track off their new album to be released when i saw them live and i can honestly say it sounded more bad ass than hands of blood.

must give an eewww to bullet for my valentine, dont really like them. Machine head were good back in the day, and their latest offering is quite good, but i do think they lost the way in the middle there a bit.

i wasnt saying metal cant be good without solos, im just saying its something that doesnt make as many appearences in todays metal.

in general i listen to alot of 80's and 90's metal and alot of power metal. BUT i love these guys as they are just brutal.
